Hello Hugh

Thanks for explaining the Constable family were not in slave trade , but plantation owner's. Yes, I have copy of gravestone thanks. Williams Sandom had a well recorded royal naval career. For the record he was baptised 17 December 1786 at Deptford St Nicholas. Looks as if you were aware of JGC's marriage etc.

Best of luck with your research

Roger

Hi Roger
Thanks for yr offer. I have found out a lot about Williams Sandom on the internet and probably have enough detail for my purposes. However I would like to know his exact place and date of birth if you know them. I only know he was born in about 1785 making him about 27 years older than Jane... I have a photograph of his gravestone which you might have seen before. To correct a point in yr post, whilst the Constable family were evidently slave owners, they were not involved in the slave trade (ie they were not traders of slaves)- an important distinction. I still have no idea how, when or where the Constable ancestors arrived in the WI. Rgds.

I have read your article with interest, as a family member (rear admiral Williams Sandom) married Jane Gabrielle Constable 12 March 1844 at Battersea Parish Church. They appear in the 1851 census (where Jane is given as having been born in the West Indies), but did not survive to the next census. Both are buried at Blundeston in Suffolk. It was through looking at www.ucl.ac.uk/ibs that I learnt of the Constable family's involvement in the slave trade, although I suspected as much. My Sandom line has been well researched by me, and I have a lot on Williams. You may already know this connection, but I will happily share my information with you if you would like it

Regards

Roger

Hi, Just another shot in the dark! I am looking for Walter Henry Gilbert's family. He was born in 1864 and came to the US in 1883/1884. I am hoping to find his parents/siblings etc. On his naturalization papers he listed "British West Indies" as his birth place, no particular island.

Thanks you!

Cal

My mother, Vonnie, and I are currently in Dominica on vacation and also researching the family history. Ephrem if you are Ken's son then you are our 4th cousin. Conrad is my great uncle and was married to Rita who passed away about 5 years ago. He lives in England. He is brother to Clayton, my grandad, Carlisle who lives in Houston and Sheila in Canada. According to what we know a Donald Roudette left Coulibistri, Dominica in the early 1900s and settled in Trinidad. He had a brother who stayed in Dominica and we think his name was Ellis. Ephrem what's the name of your grandfather? Donald's children were Gerald, Leo, Edith and twin sisters that passed away. Gerald was my great grandfather. Yesterday in Coulibistri we met Mildred Roudette who will stay in touch with us and try to find out more. Hope this was helpful!!
Marlon

Hi Helen
Sorry, but I am not aware of any specific connection between Latitia Revans (nee Constable) and John Constable the artist. However I am 100% sure that this Latitia was the daughter of the John Charles Constable (JCC) who was born in 1770 and died in 1855. I have a copy of his will, and Latitia Revans is mentioned in it by name. If I could go further back into JCC's parentage, it is possible that I might find a link with the Suffolk Constables, but at the moment I am still stuck with knowing only that he was born in 1770 in the West Indies. I have now found out a lot about his wife Laetitia Maria Mourgue, but I still know nothing of JCC's parentage.
Rgds
Hugh

Constable family of the Island of Dominica - late 1700's

Hi

I am looking for information on the Constable family who were resident in Dominica in the late 1700's. I believe they owned (partly or wholely) several estates on Dominica and St Vincent. There was a John Charles Constable (1770-1855)(my ggg-grandfather) and his brother Daniel Constable. There was also a sister who became Cecilia Rebecca Morson (1768-1842). Daniel had a son, Joseph, and two daughters Ann and Latitia, all of whom were alive in 1850.

John Charles was married to a Laetitia Maria Mourgue, but I have no idea as to her date and place of birth. I think they married in Dominica in 1798 but my evidence for this is flimsy. They had 7 children in total, four of whom were born on the Island, viz Latitia 1804, Charles 1805, George abt 1811 and Jane Gabrielle 1814.

I suspect that both John Charles and Latitia Maria Mourgue were born in the West Indies - but I don't know if this was on Dominica itself. John Charles spend much of his later life in the UK, but I am struggling to find details of his parentage, his place of birth, where he spent his early life. If he was born in the West Indies, when/how did his parents get to be there?

Any help much appreciated

Hugh Constable
UK

Is your father Wilbert related to Hamil and the late Mozart and Esley Serrant? If we can find the names of the first Serrants that went to live in Dominica that would be of great help. I have read that indeed there were Serrant families who left Martinique and went to live in Dominica. My grandfather and his 3 siblings were all born in Cayenne. There has to be some reason why after their mother died in Cayenne that 3 of them went to Dominica they must have had some relative there. I went to Cayenne to find info on their mother but that was impossible because they have no birth records of her and not knowing when she died made it impossible to get any more info. She definitely had to have had relatives in Dominica or else her sons would not have chosen Dominica for all 3 to go to. I am trying to find out where the only sister my grandfather had could have gon eto and if she had kids etc. Probably going to Martinique and doing some genealogy research there might give us answers. The French have lots of records just some might be too old to look into but they kept a good administration.

He left Dominica many years ago. Yes the Serrant family is a very, very large family.
A story is told about two brothers who came to Dominica from Martinique and one setled in St Joseph and the other in Pointe Michel, Dominica. I need more information about this story. Anyone who have knowledge of this please reply. It is said that all Serrants are related.

Hi Mike
You are right! The date of birth fits and it would make sense that whilst JCC was living/working in Dominica, young John would have been at boarding school in England. But what makes it certain, in my mind, that this is the right John is that the name above his in the list is Charles Quayle Constable - John's younger brother!

John certainly wasn't christened John Jolly (I have seen a copy of the parish baptism record) but it could well be that he acquired the Jolly as a nickname?

Thanks again
Rgds

Hugh

PS
Incidently, Charles Quayle died aged 26, at sea, on passage from Antigua to England. You will see from the Old Carthusian's list that he went on to Trinity College, Cambridge. His claim to fame is that, in 1827, he was a founder member of the Cambridge University Rowing Club! Not many people can say that.

Hi Mike

John Constable, eldest son of JCC is indeed my gg-grandfather. He was born in London in 1801, but I do believe that, at that time, JCC was either living full-time or part time in Dominica. There are various directories that give John's occupation as "West India Merchant", so there is no doubt he was active in the family business. Contrary to what is stated in the Clanbarker website, I don't believe he ever served in the military/navy, or that he was ever a Captain. I am pretty sure that the "John Jolly Constable" of Oak House, Battersea was actually John Charles himself (rather than John). I often wonder where the "Jolly" bit came from, but it has not cropped up anywhere else, so I haven't given much serious thought to it. (Could Jolly just be a corruption of Charlie?)

The Marmaduke you refer (born Eling 1833) is indeed John's only son, my great grandfather. I just wish I knew exactly who he was named after!

I believe I have a pretty good grasp of the family from JCC onward. JCC was born in the West Indies in 1770, and I know a fair about his life in the 1800's. Its the part of his life between 1770 and 1801 that continues to elude me, including of course, exactly where he was borne, who his parents were and who their parents were....

Thanks again for yr interest and comments.

Rgds
Hugh

PS: There was a Captain John Constable of the Royal Navy, who served in the West Indies under Admiral Benbow in 1702, but this was a good 70 years before the birth of JCC and I have not established any link between the two - although there may yet be one!

Hi Hugh,
Further to my note earlier today, I see that the "Bristol Mercury" dated 1st January 1827 has the marriage of John Constable eldest son of JCC, Oak House, Battersea to Margaret Saunders 2nd daughter of John Saunders of (looks like Heling) Eling? Southampton on the 12th December 1826 (familysearch)

This would make Marmaduke, John Charles Constable's Grandson.!

Regards

Mike Morson

Hi Hugh,
Re Rebecca Morson, sorry but i do not have any further details.
By the way back to the "7th May 1804" listing of slaves in Dominica. Between the reference to John Chas Constable and Rebecca Morson was a "MRS MORQUE" If you Google "Letitia Mourgue Constable" you arrive at a website called ClanBarker.com which has a Capt. John Constable wife Margaret, He appears to have been a "West Indian Merchant" and had a son called "Marmaduke" born/bapt 31st October 1833 Eling, Hants. May be the link with John Charles at Oak House. other children were "Caroline Maria Constable" bapt 1831 Eling, Hants died 12th May 1880 Southampton. "Margaret Alicia b 28th November 1827, Bapt 1828 Married William Gascoigne Roy of London.

Ps. I just wondered if Capt John Constable born c1802-5 was actually "John Jolly Constable" first son of John Charles?

Regards

Mike Morson

Hi Mike

Thank you! I am very excited by this find of yours. My great grandfather was a Marmaduke Constable (MC) which my father always believed was a family name. I know there are plenty of MC's in history, and in other branches of the family, but up till now, I have never found another one in my branch. It is quite usual for names like Marmaduke to be passed down, but "my" MC's father was a John (no second name), and his father was the John Charles (JCC) who was the subject of my original enquiry.

I note that the book was published in 1841, and I know from the 1841 census that JCC was living in Oak House (together with sister Rebecca Morson) so its pretty clear that the John Constable who was a subscriber to the book was "my" JCC. The really exciting bit is that this is the first time I have come upon a MC in the same breath as "my" JCC.

The next question for me to tackle is who was this MC? The book refers to him as "MC of Oak House, Surrey", but he was not living there in 1841. Was he JCC's brother? Or father? JCC himself was 70 in 1841, so the MC is pretty unlikely to be his father. As for brother, I have a copy of JCC's will and two siblings - David and Rebecca - are mentioned, but there is no mention of a Marmaduke.

Anyway, that is all to be investigated, and this book seems to be a very good place to start....

Once again, thanks for your interest and for this nugget of information.

By the way, do you know if Rebecca Morson had any children? I haven't come cross any...

Rgds

Hugh Constable

Thanks Mike. I have now learnt for sure that that John Charles Constable was born in the West Indies, but that still leaves an awful lot I don't know about him. I found the reference you mentioned. Whilst it doesn't add a lot to my knowledge of the family, it does provide some interesting background reading about the economics of owning/operating plantations in the West Indies.

I had already found the "Hampshire Compensation Notes" reference which tells me more about JCC's plantations. There is mention of a letter from him to the Compensation Commission, but I will need to make a visit to the National Archives in Kew in order to get my hands on it. Thanks again for your interest.

Rgds
Hugh

Hi Hugh,
Re Rebecca Morson (Morfon) of Roseau, Dominica. If you GOOGLE "7th May 1804" there is a Google Book on Slave ownership from 1799 where you will find on page "66" a reference to John Chas Constable and Mrs R Morfon. In the same book are various references to "Henry Constable" & a "William Constable" also other Morson,s (Morfon,s) all of Roseau. James Morson and his son another James were the main Morson/Morfon (usual spelling before c1800). Rebecca may have been married to James Morson junior after his first wife died in 1790.

"john Charles Constable" is also mentioned in the "Hampshire Compensation Notes" also found through a Google search.

Regards Mike Morson

Hello -

Would you happen to have come across a John Henry Thomas Challenger (dates unknown), who married Susana Jane Barnes? I am trying to track down my great-great grandfather and his family, but can't seem to find much on the Challengers of St. Kitts.

Thanks!

-Ashley
