Please forgive my abrupt response to your inquiry about the Hamel family. I was so surprised that anyone had even heard the name previously, much less know of the family's origins in New Orleans.

As far as I know, only one mention of the family is made in the work of the Conde de Jaruco, a great-great grandaunt of mine, María Juana Bellow-Hamel, who I believe married one of the de la Torriente family.

The name has numerous spellings, although all are from the same source. The spelling most common in my line of the family is Belleau de Hamel. My great-grandmother was Ma. Juana Elena de las Mercedes Belleau de Hamel y Hamel, who was born and raised in Havana, the daughter of Enrique B. Hamel y Penot, and Merced B. Hamel y Hondares. She married (U.S.) Col. William Thomas Wood in 1900.

Fernando B. Hamel (my g-g-g-grandfather) established a business in Havana, coming there originally during the 1850's from New Orleans. One of the little streets near his business was named for him, and is still called Callejon Hamel. John B. Hamel (another g-g-g-grandfather) also had a business in Havana, called Hamel & Sons, which was a ships broker and commission merchant enterprise.

I am still very much a novice in exploring the possibilities for research on my Cuban roots, and I can see – both from your quick response to my inquiry, as well as other postings you have made – that you are extremely knowledgeable in this area. Any tips that you could offer would be most gratefully appreciated.

I am also looking for Jimenez de Cisneros in Cuba. My g-g-g-grandmother was Merced Hondares Jimenez de Cisneros, and she married Fernando B. Hamel. I would love to share info.

Thank you very much for posting that information, which I believe was gathered by a distant Hamel cousin some time ago. You may want to also check out a user homepage at the FTM site, which was put together by another cousin doing research on the Hamels, Su Jacobsen. Her primary focus is the allied family of Nathan. The information she has compiled incorporates what you have posted, and adds many new things that have been found more recently.

It's hard to know where to begin -- but one place is with the children of John B. Hamel and Enriqueta Penot y Gilbau. There were actually 5 children. John Jr., born 1845; Marie-Amelie, born 1847; Anita; Maria Juana; and Enrique, b. 1850.

Marie-Amelie achieved a certain amount of international fame with her morganatic marriage in New York in 1869 to a prince of the house of Bourbon-Bragance, a member of the royal family of the Two Sicilies. It was quite a scandal at the time. She became the Countess of Rocca Guglielma afterward. She died in France in 1914.

Anyway, I look forward to your questions, and would still like to know if this is academic or familial interest.

Following up this thread, i am wondering if anybody has more information on the Hondares surname. i probably don't have it, but i am searching for the family of one maria hondares who married jesus quinones; they were the parents of juana de jesus quinones y hondares, who married don thomas gonzalez de mendoza y govantes, in 1856.

i have heard of one eusebio hondares, who was escribano of santa clara in 1776, but i have no other details on that family.
