Hi, I'm actually more interested in the Acebal part. My paternal grandmother's maiden name was Acebal. She was born in 1906 in the province of Oriente. Her parents were both Spanish immigrants, I believe from Asturias. In the little research I've done on this last name, I've discovered that it's not very common. Anyone have any information on the origins of this last name? I think I read somewhere once that it's of Basque origin.

Richard.

Thanks for the information, Rene. I already know that my paternal grandmother was Cuban. The surname Acebal, however, is not of Cuban origin, since her parents came to Cuba from Spain. In more recent research I have done, it seems the name may actually have originated in Asturias, rather than the Basque region, as I originally thought. Since the name is so rare, and since you are from Cuba, I wonder if we may be distant relatives.

Rene, I know plenty of Acebal people here in Miami. Anyway, I'll start with my paternal grandmother. Maybe you'll recognize some of these people or something. Her name was Blanca, and she was born in Oriente. She had several siblings, including Marcelino, Mercedes ("Chela"), Leonor, Luz Divina, and Cristina. I think that's about it. Their mom's name was Dolores, I believe. I'm blanking on the father's name. Do any of these names ring a bell? Some of the offspring of the Acebal family include Manolo, Lolita, Tatico (I can't recall his real name), Mercedes ("Chelita"), Jesus ("Nene"), Pepe, Blanquita, Lourdes, Cristina ("Carun"), Lucita, Maria Dolores ("MariLola"), Francisco ("Paco"). Any of these names familiar to you? Some of these folks are actually deceased, but most are still alive and well in Miami and New Jersey
