My mother's maiden name is Betancourt and the family is from Havana. Her father Matia Betancourt was born in 1890 and died in 1980 in New Jersey. He was a merchant marine in the early 1900's. He then served on the police force in the city of Havana and then retired about 1950. He was the youngest of 4 boys and the only surviving child after the Spanish American War. When he was alive he told me that our ancestors came from the Canary Islands. I recently discovered that a French explorer by the name of Betancourt conquered the Canary Islands in the 1600's and is a very famous historical figure there.

Ana Marquez was born around 1860 in the Canary Islands in Spain. She married a gentleman whose last name was Betancourt. I don't have his first name. They had two children: Carmen, born around 1879, and Manuel, born about 1880. Carmen married Manuel Gonzalez, who was born about 1877. They had three children: Oscar, born about 1899, Ana Maria, born about 1901, and Josefa Gonzalez, born on May 6, 1903. Josefa is my paternal grandmother. The Betancourt man who married Ana Marquez is my great-great-grandfather. How does this information compare with your data? The name Betancourt entered Cuba through two separate points: Havana and Santiago. My family is from the Havana branch. Any help is appreciated.
Regards,

Jorge

My name is Barbara Betancourt. I reside in Miami, Florida. My father's name is Ricardo Betancourt he is originally from Yaguajay, Las Villas in Cuba. My grandfather's name was Vicente Betancourt married to Julieta Monzon also from Las Villas. My great grandfather's name was Aguedo Betancourt, also from Las Villas. He was a wealthy land baron before Castro's revolution. Sadly, he hung himself distraught from having lost everything his family ever worked for. Do these names ring a bell?

I was checking on the vol.IV of Conde de Jaruco for Betancourts and I can see there are very few " Manuel Betancourts".

I must remind you that is it posible that your relative had a " compound name " and the family called him by his second name..and that also, thru the years the names have variations ( some letters added or some taken away....)

I just found this entry and maybe , if this is your relative, some of his descendants will give you the clue needed.

Here:

Don Alonso MANUEL Betancourt y Gonzalez , was Mayor of the Villa de Pto. Principe in 1834.
He was married twice at the Catedral : first time: march 17, 1827 with Dña. Maria de Loreto Cisneros Betancourt.

Second marriage:January 1st., 1839 with Dña. Maria Francisca Cisneros y de la Pera.

From this second marriage the had 4 children:
1.-Manuela
2.-Luisa
3.-Maria de las Mercedes
4.-Gaspar Alonso
( all of them of course, Betancourt Cisneros )

To keep the Betancourt surname ( apellido ) , let`s check at the son: Gaspar Alonso Betancourt Cisneros

Gaspar Alonso Betancourt Cisneros married twice:
First wedding: with Malvina Sanchez Pereira y Loret de Mola, july 2nd., 1858.

Second wedding: with Dña. Josefa del Castillo Cisneros on november 26, 1860.

At this point here is not more information on this branch.

. BRANCH TWO ends HERE.

If they had children , we need to look for: Betancourt Castillo and Betancourt Sanchez and I can`t find those surnames in vol. IV.

Does this last names ring a bell ?

As you can see, it doesn`t tell us when Alonso MANUEL Betancourt Gonzalez was born...but following the trail to wedding dates, there is a posssibility that he was born like you said, in 1805, getting married at 22 yeras of age and at 24 again.
And was Mayor at 29 ?

If I find more information, I will post it!
I hope this is the right track to your roots.
Regards, Maruca

Hello,

In my husband's gen. tree there is a Gaspara Alonso Betancourt Cisneros (d. ca 1768), married to Angela Hidalgo Agramonte. They had a daughter:
Juana de la Cruz Betancourt Hidalgo, m. 1768 in Puerto Principe to Capitan Francisco Agramonte Miranda.
They had 5 children:
Micaela, Juana de Dios, Gaspar, Francisco & Jacinto Agramonte Betancourt.
If this is the same Gaspar Alonso Betancourt, there is a big difference with the dates. Perhaps you can help me check.
Thanks,

María Cristina Chibas
