My father was named Mario Julio
Alfonso Perez. He was born in the town of Guamutas(Renamed
Marti in 1898) in Matanzas province Cuba. He was a Veterinary and praciced untill his death in the town of Perico Matanzas. He had two brothers named Jose
Ignacio Alfonso and Gustavo
Alfonso born also in Guamutas (
Marti)and residents of Havana. His father was named Jose
Ignacio Alfonso y
Triana and also was born in Guamutas. His mother was naned
Concepcion Perez also from Matanzas born in
Los Arabos. As I understand most of the
Alfonso surnames in Cuba come Spain possibly from the
Canary Islands. and settled in the province of Matanzas around the towns of
Colon, Guamutas (Jaguey
Grande, Itabo, Central
Agramonte (sugar mill), Jovellanos and the Central Espana (sugar mill) .During Colonial times some of the
Alfonso ran sugar plantations and were involved in agriculture. The
Alfonso were the original owners of the Central Espana. The
Alfonso,
Perez and
Triana families were intermarried . Eladio
Triana Alfonso was
Mayor of
Marti in 1952.There are not many with a last name
Alfonso in Cuba, because the name
Alfonso in mostly used as a first name. They say all the
Alfonso surnames from Matanzas province are family related.
The
Perez name was very common throughout the island. There was the
Perez surname in Matanzas around the towns of
Colon Marti and
Los Arabos. There was a Jose
Alvarez Perez coronel of the cuban army that fought against the spanish Known as "el
Gallego" that was born in
Los Arabos , Matanzas and was related to my grandmother.
