I am searching for anyone with the name PUMARADA. It is an
Asturian name meaning "apple orchard". I know my great
grandfather, Jose Ramon Pumarada y Marina, was born in
Villamayor, Asturias, and that he moved to Cuba about
1862. He had a brother, Juan Antonio Pumarada y Marina who
went to Puerto Rico the same year, but he died there 4
years later. Jose married Aurora Rita de los Dolores
Gonzalez y Hernandez. They had 2 children, including my
grandfather who was born in 1882. His name was Jose Antonio
Guadalupe Pumarada y Gonzalez. He was born in Havana. His
father, Jose Ramon, died in 1899. Both Jose Antonio and his
mother, Aurora, moved to the US around 1908. I do not know
for sure what happened to his sister, but the story is that
she died in Cuba before they came to the US.
My mother was an only child born when her father was in
his 40s. He died in 1939, and there is no other family that
we have positively identified, although the name PUMARADA
is rare enough to assume that all of us are related
distantly. I know of a family of Pumaradas in Puerto Rico,
a few scattered in the US, and 1 family in Cuba. If you
know of any others, please let me know; whether they are
direct connections or not, we may be able to help each
other trace our roots.
Thank you,
Karen Davis-Pumarada
