Dan,

I have a branch of my family from the province of Las Tunas, which includes Holguin. My great Grand-uncle was named Gregorio Jacobo "Goyo" Ortiz-Gamboa, Born in las Tunas in 1885. He Married Tranqulina Parra, and they had at least 6 children, Gregoria Jr., Anita, Berta, Marina, Nori, and Claribel.

I also have a Pedro Parra who married Primativa Jimenez who are also kin of mine. IF this rings any bells let me know.

The problem posed by learnibg about any period of cuban history, is that most books are written in spanish. If you have at least some knowledge of the language, youe can browse through several history books. Libreria Universal in Miami, and Libreria La Moderna Poesia have them. also if you are in Miami, you can go to the Public Library; they have them, the best kept in the special Colections. there is an Enciclopedia Cubana and the series : Cuba Economia y sociedad, written by the late Levi Marrero. The language is simple and easy to nderstand. and maybe an older relative might help explaining or translating. Older relatives are very valuable sources of info. the only book written in english is Hugh thomas's Cuba; however I don't know if he mentions Grave de Peralta. Marta

Yes, Im sure our families are somehow related..the name Pubillones is rather uncommon and I know several of my grandfather Enrique Pubillones (now deceased) were from the Guantanamo and Sagua de Tanamo Area.

My great-grandmother was Venturosa GRAVE DE PERALTA y AGUILERA, daughter of Antonio GRAVE de PERALTA and Amelia AGUILERA. According to my information, this family was from Holguín, but Venturosa lived in Guantánamo with her husband Andrés MARTIN (pronounced MARTÉN in Cuba) y DE CASTRO. Andrés Martin (Martén) de CASTRO was murdered in Campechuela, near Manzanillo, in 1902, because of a series of articles critical of the Guardia Rural that he had published in the newspaper "La Tribuna". Venturosa remained a widow after that. She and Andrés had two children: Andrés and Maria Luisa Martin y GRAVE de PERALTA. Andrés jr. became a doctor and moved to Palma Soriano where he married Blanca PICAZO y RIVAS. Maria Luisa remained in Guantánamo until exile in the US; she was married to Luis DEVILLE from Guantánamo. I always heard that my grandfather was related to a GRAVE de PERALTA from Santiago de Cuba who was a dentist (in the 1940's and 50's).

If anyone finds a connection and knows anything about this history, please, let me know. I would be most grateful. I can also share more information about this branch of the GRAVE de Peraltas.

Margarita Martin

I would love to hear from you and learn more about your grandfather Enrique Pubillones. My great, grandmother Aurora Pubillones lived a long life and died in Guantanamo.
I learned more about her recently from a friend in Spain who kindly sent me her baptismal certificated, her fathers and grandfather. Hope to hear from you soon.
