Good Day,

I hope all is going well. I am looking for information pertaining the family of an Isabella Bella Rogers or Rodgers or Roger from Saba (born possibly around the 1870's or 60's). Long story short she married a Canton and died in St. Thomas. I have no information on her parents or forebearers but would like to.

Rymer in Tortola and Spanishtown

Hi,

I am looking for information about my ancestors who owned plantations in Tortola and Spanishtown. William Rymer (dies prior to 1813) and Martha Rymer his wife who died in Tortola in circa 1805. William was one of the jury for the hodge trial and according to the slave records owned one slave. his father was John Rymer esq (Died 1813) who had plantation on tortola number 91 or 92 whihc later became the settlement for the freed slaves. from what I know the family was orginally from Clifton in Bristol. I dont' know much else and would love to know how they came to be on the island. Rymer is not the most popular of surnames and given the prevelence in the Carribean I have suspected if my branch were on other islands such as jamaica or barbados at some time prior to coming to VI. According to Martha's death notice it hinted that they also had holdings on Spanish Town but I have not managed to find any evidence of this.

You can call me Cab. I am new to the Vanterpool search portion of my family. Mariah Vanterpool does not stand out at all. I have been speaking with one of my aunts and she knows alot. I will ask her. I do know that Caroline Elizabeth Vanterpool had a few sisters. I did not get all their names, but here are the ones that I do know: Anne, Mila, Ruth, Nesi, and Neni. I believe there may have been 1 or 2 more. I do not know where they were all born, but I understand that some of them were born on Thatch Island. Once I get more information, I will share it. I do not know my great great grandmother's name. But my great grandmother's maiden name was Celeste or Celestina Lettsome. Her mother (my great great grandmother) was a Sprauve and her father was a Lettsome.

I am looking for information on Ellen Norman Christopher of Virgin Gorda. She seems to have been born between 1890 and 1900 or so. She is said to have had two sisters, Mary and Margaret, at least one of whom (Mary?) had moved to St. Thomas by 1916. Ellen's children were:

--Florence Adina Kushner Nelthropp (married a Nelthropp from St. Croix/St. Thomas)
--Blanche Christopher Norman (she married Garnet Norman of Anegada)
--Marie Louise Hyman (she married Charles Hyman of Tortola, descendant of the Smiths on the maternal side, see below)
--Alvin Christopher
--Adolphus Christopher (children with a Smith of Tortola, descendant of the Peter Island/Salt Island Smiths)

Thank you for your reply, my records show: Abraham C. S. Vanterpool married to Anne Toland, who died in 1826. His father as William Vanterpool, who was his mother?
His son, Thomas, was taken to Saba to be raised by 'his' mother after Anne died.
Based on the naming patterns, I am guessing William married a Simmons.

Ann - may I take the liberty of questioning the full name you listed: "Abraham Charleswell Simmons Venterpool". I believe it should be just "Abraham Charleswell Vanterpool" without the Simmons. He married Joanna Simmons on Saba 19 Nov. 1851. Her father was Abraham Simmons and mother Elizabeth Horton.

I've misplaced the exact reference but I do recall it was among the Colonial Office (CO) records at Kew. It is also listed at British History Online but with no reference to Kew. I will look into my pile of records to see if I can get the exact reference.

I was not aware of Cooper Island..how interesting. My Great Great Grandfather was Hartman Markoe who married Elizabeth Cooper Kelly. ( they are buried in The Marble Cemetary in NYC).
Tell me more about Cooper Island. I am aware of the St Croix connection. Peter Markoe Gov of Nevis. Jan Markoe etc.

His Father was Abraham Charleswell Simmons Vanterpool, died in Saba 1860.
His mother was Annie Toland, her mother was Ann Rodgers, of Antiga, wife of Rev. John Toland of England. Annie died in Spanish Town in childbirth.
The Tolands took him to Saba. maybe to be raised by his paternal grandmother.

Property owned there 1765 by Peter Markoe Jr (born 1722) of St. Croix. Possibly earlier by his father, also Peter (born 1702). Bequeathed to Junior's children 1765. No information regarding development or purpose.

Hello,

On 12 November 1819, arrived William Vanterpool to St Thomas with his wife (no name), their sons Abraham, Daniel & David and their daughters Ann & Mary. They came from St Maarten on board a vessel skippered by J. Hassell.
The vessel in question was probably the Dutch Sloop “Anny” (or “Ann”), which was regularly calling at St Thomas, skipperd by one John Hassell.

- What happened with William and his family? Was it just a short visit or a transfer stop, or did they stay on St Thomas?

Alan Vanterpool, the family historian, says that Abraham [Charleswell], above, married Ann Toland on Virgin Gorda in the 1820´s. They had one son, Thomas Charleswell, who was born on Virgin Gorda in 1826. His mother died in childbirth when he was born and he was later taken to Saba, where he was brought up by his grandmother.
Thomas Charleswell became a carpenter and seems to have been living on Saba with his family. He married Joanna Simmons and seven children were born, although only four grew to adulthood. All sons, Ernest, John Pitman and Thomas Charles became well known sea captains.

This is in glaring contrast to the meagre knowledge we have about Abraham´s parents, brothers and sisters.

Hello Duane. I think you and I may have a common relative. My great grandmother(Celestina Thomas)was part Sprauve. Her mother was a Sprauve from St. John. Do you know if you have any Sprauve relatives from St. John?

Research on Tortola/Virgin Gorda

I am looking for some research advice. I am going to be on Virgin Gorda/Tortola in November and am hoping to be able to do some research and was wondering what was available and where! I am specifically looking for information about a Rachael STEPHENS/STEVENS who was born around 1804 on either Tortola or Virgin Gorda. I believe that her mother’s maiden name may have been PENN.

If anyone has any information about what resources are available and where, I would be very grateful. Since this is a once in a lifetime opportunity, I want to make it as productive as I can.
