I'm trying to determine the surname of my 4x great grandfathers -- Henry Coaklay -- third wife, Catherine. She is from Jost Van Dyke and family history states she was the sister of one of the overseers at Browns Bay estate. From records, we know of two overseers -- John L.R. Coakley and a Mr. De Sany (who arrives at the estate in 1829).
From her letters regarding Henry Coaklay's probate, she references inheiriting land on JVD which is undivided and jointly owned by her sister and brother.Their names are not mentioned, unfortunately.
Upon Henry Coaklay's death in 1840, Catherine shows up on the 1841 census residing with the Richardson family. The census shows Catherine (36), Henrianna Coaklay (28, Henry's daughter with first wife Eliza Woods), Amanda Malvina Coaklay (Henry's 5 year old daughter with Catherine), along with 18 year old Christina Hughes and 15 year old Thomas Hughes.
Possibly the Hughes children are Catherine's children from a previous marriage or, less likely, her younger siblings? I presume they are related to her as all are noted as leaving St John by boat in Oct of 1841 and heading for Thatch Island. There is no further mention of them in St John records.
Anyone come across any families which might tie into these folks?
Catherine is believed born in 1805
Amanda Malvina Coaklay was born in 1836
Christina Hughes is believed born ~1823
Thomas Hughes is believed born ~1826
