I was informed differently about my gggrandmother Francesca Almestica by my grandmother Nellerine d. Of Bellencita d. Of Francesca. I was told that she was married to James W Abbott but your story sounds plausible because I was told that he took her from her family in Vieques to Tortola VI. Please let me know if you do find anything else back in PR. Keira pickeira@gmail.com

Rymer in Tortola and Spanishtown

Hi,

I am looking for information about my ancestors who owned plantations in Tortola and Spanishtown. William Rymer (dies prior to 1813) and Martha Rymer his wife who died in Tortola in circa 1805. William was one of the jury for the hodge trial and according to the slave records owned one slave. his father was John Rymer esq (Died 1813) who had plantation on tortola number 91 or 92 whihc later became the settlement for the freed slaves. from what I know the family was orginally from Clifton in Bristol. I dont' know much else and would love to know how they came to be on the island. Rymer is not the most popular of surnames and given the prevelence in the Carribean I have suspected if my branch were on other islands such as jamaica or barbados at some time prior to coming to VI. According to Martha's death notice it hinted that they also had holdings on Spanish Town but I have not managed to find any evidence of this.

I'm searching for info on my grandfather, Arthur born 1910, and his wife. Believe he lived in the B.V.I. and moved his wife, one son, and three daughters to St. Thomas in the 1940's. He was a sailor/ship captain? and traveled often. His wife died about 1949. He died in New York about 1990. The late E. Wellington Callwood, minister in the Methodist church, was a relative, though I'm not sure how. Any info or ideas would be appeciated. Thank you, Lynnette

In the BVI, the Georges root is in Tortola whereas the GEORGE Family has its roots in Virgin Gorda... The Georges are related to Thomas (from the Hill and Sea Cows Bay and soem of the Malones), Hope this is helpful

Hello,
just came across your posting. I am very interested in whether you have come across any information on Frasers in the BVI/Tortola. Specifically, I am interested in one William Abraham/Abram Fraser, son of Eliza Norman and Joseph Fraser. Lore has it that Liza/Eliza Norman had two sons. Any information you have about this family, the other brother and the parents and/or otehr relatives. Is there a way to trace back to Liza Norman's parents? To Joseph Fraser's parents.

Your help would be gratly appreciated.

Dec. 2, 1845) daughter of Henry (mason) and Hetamina Georges, Abraham (b. Jan. 7,1844) son of Andrew (laborer)and Amelia Georges of Cane Garden Bay, Catherine (b. Mar. 1844) daughter of William (laborer) and Zetey Georges, Henrietta Louisa (b. Apr. 30, 1943) daughter of Nelson Fahie (mason) and Dora Georges of Apple bay, etc.

I'm not exactly researching your family rather I am research ing people alive during that time and unfortunately I do not have Joseph but I hope this has been helpful.

Hi Maria:

I obtained this information through microfilm available at the LDS Library & Family History Centers. They've got baptismal (basically from about 1824 forward) and burial (some as far back as 1845) records for the Road Town Methodist Church; baptismal and other records (about 1859 forward) for St. George the Martyr Episcopal Church; and civil birth and marriage records (1859 forward) for the BVI.

I happened to have collected the ABBOTT info about 10 years ago when I was helping some THOMAS, SMITH and PENN relatives with their genealogies.

The children of Francis and Elizabeth ABBOTT that I've documented were:

James Francis, b. 22FEB1843 on Salt Island, baptized on 06APR1843;

Ellen Eliza, b03MAR184[4/5?] on Salt Island, baptized on 06MAR1845;

Frances Rebecca, b. 15JAN184[6?] on Salt Island, baptized on 09MAR1847;

William Edward, b. 11DEC1848 on Salt Island, baptized on 21DEC1848;

John Samuel, b. 24[?]AUG1850 on Salt Island, baptized 26DEC1850;

Alexander, b. 16NOV1852 on Salt Island, baptized 21NOV1852; and

Henrietta, b. 09FEB1855 on Salt Island, baptized 09DEC1855; all baptisms were at the Road Town Methodist, Road Town, Tortola, BVI.

Hope this helps. If I come across anything else, I'll let you know.

Karl
Hi Maria,

I'm not familiar with any of the names you've listed.

Amanda Melvina ABBOTT Smith's parents were Francis and Elizabeth ABBOTT.

If I come across anything else, I'll let you know.

Have you checked the LDS Tortola microfilm? The Methodist baptism records start from 1816 (actually about 1824 with a few entries for 1815/1816 brought forward) and 1859 for the Episcopal records. Civil birth registration records begin in 1859.

Karl

This is great. Do you know who James Whitfied Abbott married. My great-great-grandfather was James W. Abbott, born before 1890, Salt Island. Married Francesca Almestica from Puerto Rico and they moved to St. John. They had Constancia Augustina, Bellencita Roselyn (my ggrandmother), Ida, Victoria, Idona, Victor, Thomas, James Jr., Briggs, Samuel, Hendreta and Frances. Most of them either stayed on St. John or now live on St. Thomas. I hava had absolutely no luck.

Where were you able to find this information?

Thanks,
Maria

Maria,

Amanda Melvina ABBOTT was the wife of James Flanigan SMITH. I documented 17 of their children as follows:

1. Peter; b. 16FEB1858 on Peter's Island;

2. Elizabeth; b. 24JAN1860 on Salt Island;

3. Mary Augusta; b. 05FEB1862 on Salt Island;

4. Rebecca Melvina; b. 22DEC1864 on Salt Island; is
believed to have married Frederick PENN, but not
documented;

5. Sophia Angelina; b. 1867 on Salt Island;

6. James Edwin; b. 08APR1869 on Salt Island; married
Arletta Arsenath PENN on 27NOV1890;

7. Victoria Belviana; b. 21JUN1871 on Salt Island; married
Edmond Milton THOMAS on 28DEC1893;

8. Amelia; b. 31DEC1873 on Salt Island;

9. Esther Louise; b. 1876 on Salt Island; believed to have
married William Henry SMITH, but not documented;

10. Ernest Leopold; b. 17MAR1878 on Salt Island;

11. Charlotte Amelia; b. 22SEP1881 on Salt Island;

12. Herbert Alexander; b. 14APR1885 on Salt Island;

13. Isabella Rebecca; b. ???? at Sea Cow's Bay;

14. Charlotte Melvina; b. o4FEB1888 at Sea Cow's Bay;

15. Sarah Alberta; b. 03MAR1890 at Sea Cow's Bay;

16. James Whitfield; b. 26JAN1892 at Sea Cow's Bay; and

17. Alexander; b. 24JUN1893 at Sea Cow's Bay.

Dona Flor also has another daughter, Rosita Henry, living in Puerto Rico and a son, whose name I do not know.

The late H. R. [Howard Reginald] PENN, BVI legislator and politician married Alicia Regaline THOMAS, a daughter of Edmond Milton and Victoria Belviana (SMITH) THOMAS. One of their daughters is Marlene PENN Evans of St. Thomas and Tortola.

Maybe one of the descendants of one of the persons listed here may be able to provide further info on the ABBOTTs for you. Good luck!

Hi Maria,

The ABBOTTs of Salt Island and the SMITHs are related through marriage. James Flanigan SMITH of Salt Island was married to an ABBOTT-- Amanda Melvina, if my memory serves me correctly. They had either 18 or 19 children between the late 1850's and about 1893. One of their daughters, Victoria Belviana (I believe), married a son of Harding and Caroline THOMAS.

Florence THOMAS Fuentes aka "Teacher Florence"/"Dona Flor" was one of Victoria's children. Dona Flor died in the 1990's at about 93 years of age in San Juan, P.R.; her daughter, Dr. Sylvia Fuentes, was still living in San Juan the last I knew. However, she only had what info I had provided her. I'll try to find a copy of the info I had provided her.

Could Baby Pickering's maiden name be Pickering? I found this among the 1859 - 1901 marriages registered in Dist. D, Tortola:

Todman, John Jos. to Pickering, Sarah Ann Eliza 1881

also
Pickering, Aeneas (sp?) to Todman, Mary Eliza 1885

The Civil Registry (or at least parts of it) is available on film at an LDS Family History Center. Are you near a center?

The Marriage Index (1859 - 1966) in the Civil Registry for Tortola lists Pickering, Aeneas to Todman, Mary Eliza, District D (Road Town) 1885.

There is a Pedrito Alphonso Todman listed (b. 1899) in the Birth Index. The part of the page with the parents' names was torn off... Pedrito & Theodosia parents of Lismona Azelia (b. 1942, Tortola). Perhaps he's a namesake?

I am researching David Benj. Todman (b. 1857) married Esilene Francis (b. 1855); and Charles Frederick Todman (b. 1868) - married Leah Fraser in Tortola.

Hope some of this is useful.
rm

Hi Everyone,
I am on the never-ending quest to finish my family tree and am in need of any information of inhabitants of Salt Island from before 1920. My great grandmother, Belencita Roselynn Abbott was born on Salt Island in 1910. I understand only 1 person lives there now but am hoping someone has some historical information. Thanks.
Trying to find information on these family lines and was wondering what resources may be available. I've been doing the LDS microfilm, but have gotten to the point where the names mean nothing to me... I can't tie them into my family; I'm trying to bridge the gap. How else can I do this?

My maternal grandmother: Frances Augusta Rabsatt (born to William Rabsatt & Melvina Skelton-Rabsatt in 1885). My grandfather was Pedrito Todman who was born on St. Thomas (late 1880s!?)and was brought to Tortola by an aunt called Baby Pickering (maiden name= Todman??).

My paternal grandmother: Alice George, also born in the late 1800s (I don't have much info on her side of family). Grandfather was Abraham Benjamin Malone whose parents were John Malone & Annie Lettsome-Malone. Going back farther, Frett also comes into the ancestry.

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Gloria
