I'm searching for anything to do with myG-G-Grandfather, William ROUTLEDGE (b. circa 1828) who served in the Royal Artillery. At some point he was stationed in Bermuda, around 1860's.
One of his children (Amelia ROUTLEDGE) is listed on the 1881 census in Carlisle Cumberland, as being born in Bermuda, I calculate from the census that she would have been born 1861.
I'd like to know if there are any records of where in Bermuda William might have been stationed and what his duties might have been.
From an old photo of him in his uniform, he bears two stripes on his arm and a white "sash" running from his right shoulder across his chest, with a large metal buckle. I have been told his rank could possibly be a "bombadier" .
Would his child have been registered anywhere on the Island, or in official military records?
I have managed to track her down in the 1901 census, where her nationality was listed as "Bermuda British Subject".
If this rings bells with anyone, please get in touch!
