thanks for your reply - I did have the baptism dates of George, Grace and Mary, but not their birth dates, so that was new information.

I'm starting to think that confirmation of the birth/baptism of the younger James, like the cause of death of his father James Gurney Butler in 1871, will remain a mystery!
