I just opened an old saved message from FT-DNA and clicked on the link. This time it let me log on and I found my info. I don't know why it didn't let me log on from other more current messages. I see I am in the Carey project still.

The last message I got from FT-DNA was on March 28th about a match.

I will contact your email.
Thanks,
Carolyn
Hello Theresa,
I believe we are cousins. I remember as a child visiting my Aunt Clara Mingo in Dade County FL as well as another aunt we called Breezy who lived in the same area. Knowles were cousins of my father Charles Leary who moved from FL to NYC.
I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Elaine Leary Baly

Carolyn

I think I see you on the membership list at FT-DNA so you are part of the project. In fact, you should have received an update message from me in the last day or so via the email address we have on file for you. If you did not receive it, please contact me directly at johnca@quickclic.net and we can sort it out.

Since our project website is now at WorldFamilies, you might need to register there to track it but you are definitely on the membership list and should be able to access the site from your homepage at FT-DNA.

John

Thanks for the web sites. I have the book you spoke of but could not find any links to my folks, although I do have several William Careys in my line. William Carey is like John Smith here. There are thousands of them.

I tried to join the Carey project on the DNA site but their links are not working. At least when I go to Carey and hit join, it tells me I am not joined in any projects. Don't know what else to do. I thought I was already a part of the Carey project but haven't been on the web site in quite awhile, so I may have been dropped. I see they have redone the site.

The Carey DNA project is found at http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/carey

but we don't have any pedigree information.

The Carey pedigrees are on the Bahamas DNA site at
http://home.comcast.net/~libpjr1/bahydna.htm#IsaacCarey

Two of the individuals there are also members of the Carey DNA project.

The information I was reading today is from a book. I ordered a copy of the book today because I only have online access to a preview which consists of a limited number of pages.

The author was A. Talbot Bethell and the title is The Early Settlers of the Bahamas and Colonists of North America, Clearfield Co., Nassau, 1937.

According to what I have been able to read online, in 1646 a Capt. Sayle sailed from Bermuda with some 70 people bound for the island of Sagatos in the Bahamas, for which Sayle is said to have obtained property rights from Parliament. The island was renamed Eleuthera, which is Greek for ‘freedom’. The island was rocky and poor farming but, according to Bethell, the goal of the settlers was religious freedom. A second batch of settlers is said to have left Bermuda for Eleuthera in 1649 as a consequence of the execution of Charles I and the establishment of the Commonwealth of England by Oliver Cromwell. They were said to have been driven from Bermuda by Royalists there. This banished group were recalled in 1656.

Meanwhile, as a result of the poor farming, life was tough on Eleuthera and the inhabitants were in trouble. Word of their plight reached New England where eight of the Puritan churches collected £80, purchased supplies and, in 1650, sent them by chartered ship to Eleuthera.

Bethell lists the first inhabitants of Eleuthera as including;
William Carey, his wife Mary, daughter Sarah and son William
John Carey, his sons Richard (an adult), Mark and Abraham
Mark Carey, a single man

After the American Revolution, Loyalists left America and came to the Bahamas. Among them, arriving in New Providence from East Florida on board the transport “Charlotte” 23 June 1784, were:

Mark Carey, his wife and 2 children
A married woman named Elizabeth Carey and her 3 children

I am not connected to your Careys (as far as I know) but we have three members in the Carey DNA project with a Bahamas connection.

I have just been reading today of the Careys who were among the original settlers to Eleuthera in 1646 and also two families who left the U.S. after the American Revolution.

There are also several short Carey pedigrees on the Bahamas DNA project site. Are you aware of those?

John Carey

Re: Samuel NEWBALL & Joyce KEMBLE

I have concluded that most to the Newballs, on the message boards appear to be from the same branch and most of those are descendents of Lemuel Newball.I came accross genealogical information with Providence origins and I detected what I consider a significant flaw that skews his lineage in the wrong direction. Both Lemuel and his sister Albina Newball, are in the wrong branch, with the wrong parents.

Lemuel parents are listed as William Simeon Newball and Sarah Ann Archbold. Albina's parents are listed as Napoleon Newball Jr. and Viola Whittaker. With this arrangement Albina becomes Lemuel's grand niece, and it cuts both of them entirely off from their real parents and siblings.

Lemuel Newball and Albina Newball, were two of the six children of Michael Newball and Esther Davidson. Lemuel has a lot of descendents on the island and this should be easily verified by them. This is not criticism. I share this information as something I have known as far back as I can remember. Lemuel and Albina, were my father's uncle and aunt, people he grew up around. I did not meet anyone from that generation, but I heard of them through dad's stories and some of the olditmers who knew them.

Lemuel's other sister does not show up anywhere in the records I saw. She was Margarita Newball, who was married to Michael Folkie Levine, known as Jew Mike. She played a role in the so called "lost Newball fortune," The story became part of island forlklore and in the telling and retelling, it changed considerably into a too good to be true story, an anectode. Miss Mag, as she was called, was the keeper of the inheritance in the form of a savings passbook that was left to her mother Esther, when she was an infant. Esther, grew up, married Michael Newball, had their 6 children with each other. Those children grew up had children and even grand children of their own.

By my calculations, over 80 years passed from the original bequest, with no apparent attempt(s) by anyone to recover the "fortune." Things changed considerably when Miss Mag,lost her mind. A frantic search for the passbook began. Miss Mag never recovered and the funds were lost forever. Contacts with the Bank of England, elicited only courtesy responses.

My dad was on the scene as a small boy during the frantic search, and never knew exactly how much money was involved. He said my grandfather, told him that it was not a subtanstial amount of money. There was never a fortune. The bank book was floating around for such a long time, I believe the old man even forgot the exact amount that was in it.

I am searching for reference to my father, Emrys Penaur James, who lived in Nassau with his wife, Jessie, children Sheila and Craig during those years. My father owned an "electrical and refrigeration" business in the city that might be listed in the directory as well. One document in 1940 states he lived in "Sears Addition".

I would appreciate any help as this period in his life has proved to be a very solid brick wall. Thank you.

Since the 19th century Newballs, have been called Moccos (plural). Well into the last half of the 20th century, the term was still around, but rarely heard. The definitions for the term follow a pattern, none of them deragatory, but when the term is applied to Newballs, it becomes a negative stereotype. By the second half of the 1800's it appears to have lost its sting. Most islanders forgot what it meant, all forgot the reason(s)it was applied to Newballs. The strange thing is that as a boy I heard it as a greeting, and even had my own friendly, interesting encounter with it. Nobody that I am aware of including myself zeroed in on the conotations.

Have you ever heard the term, Mocco? If so, in what context was it used and what did it mean to you at the time? Ironically, circumstantial evidence and the timelines appear to suggest that the intended target for the term, was our slave owning ancestor, the first Newball.

It is highly unlikely that I am the only Newball, alive who has heard the term.

Based on a combination of oral history, what I call comparative history and conjecture, I have arrived at tentative conclusions. I am looking for feedback, critiques, other points of view, other perspectives.

Hi Rosemary. You were nice enough to point out that there were what I prefer to describe as inacuracies in the thread. At times that is the case when dealing with oral tradition with no documented source for reference. Information gets lost or changed in the telling over generations.

I am very interested in your critique, but you never indicated with any specificity what was wrong.

Thanks for your assistance

Re: William Baylis Family

Thank you so much for this info. I am starting to get the family put together. I recieved William will written in 1809. It states his wife Priscilla, Rev Joseph Baylis is his brother, a son William Joseph(minor) and a sister Sophia Augusta Trinitaria Baylis. So the names are fitting together perfectly.Strangly he mentions no daughters. It does however say he owns property in Kingswood,Wiltshire England.Interesting one of his daughters marries a Wylly. There is a historic event in 1817 Bahamas where Wm Baylis has to arrest Wm. Wylly(Sr). It is referred to as the "Wylly Affair". I will let you know how once I see were all the pieces fit. Thanks again

Emma married Phillip John Davis ALBURY in Key West, Ida married Anderson LONES, William married a cousin, Elizabeth possibly also a CAREY, Gertrude married John T.HIGGS (born in Bahamas), and Nettie married William T.

William Baylis was Provost Marshal for the Bahamas from 1787 till his death in 1826. I have sent off for a copy of his will. Can anyone tell me more about his 40 years on the Island of New Providence. I know he had 2 wives Ann Bell and Priscilla Thompson.I know he had at least 3or 4 daughters: Hannah Fernly b 1790, Matilda Jane b. 1809, Charlotte 1799-1812 and unknown daughter (m. James Ferris Hancock R.N.)who is probably my 4x greatgrandmother. There is also a Rev Joseph Baylis and a Harriet Baylis(spinster) having some connection to the family. If anyone can provide additional info it would be greatly appreciated. Mary

Hello,

My name is Rosemary Newball. I was reading this thread and noticed that there was a little bit of mis-information on part of it.

I'm the daughter of Daniel Newball (from Providence Island), whom is married to my mother Marilyn Hudgson de Newball. I also have a brother who is Daniel Newball Jr. All of them are still alive.

My dad also has his brother Felix Newball and sister Maria Newball. Both still living. All the rest of my aunts and uncle from the Newball side have went to see their heavenly home.

Would be nice to hear back from you. Pray all is well with you and your love ones.
Blessings,

Rosemary

Perhaps I am mistaken, but my interpretation of your message is that you believe that your uncle Roosevelt, is a participant in this dialogue. That would be easy to accept, because you have not had the opportunity to view the threads from the beginning. According to posted messages from Roosevelt's descendant(s), he came to the states during the great depresssion, subsequently changed his surname to Newbold, and raised a family. He passed sometimes in the mid 1960's.

Your grandfather, Eugene MacCarthy, was one of my dad's adult first cousins. Some of his children, for example, Roosevelt, were older than my father.

My father, granfather, great grandfather, were born and raised in Santa Isabel (Comesee). That would include your folks. Your great grandfather and my grandfather were brothers. Your paternal great, great grandparents would be my paternal great grandparents.

I remember dad mentioning that your father Paulson Newball, was an attorney, but in Providencia I never heard anything about him, so I assumed that like my dad, he had left the island and never returned. Where did he live and practice law?

My father was Jeronimo Newball, but everyone knew him as Roni. In island creole it sounds more like Ranee. He died in 1990. His last surviving sibling was James Newball, from Point (Camp), who passed a few years after my dad.

On Friday, November 29, 1929, at Port Cristobal, Canal Zone, Colon, Panama, a young man of 23, signed on as a merchant seaman, on the "SS Mayari." He was tall and slim, 5'10 137 pounds. He stated that he had three years experience as an able seaman. The ship sailed to Kingston, Jamaica, and departed there on Tuesday, December 3, 1929, scheduled to arrive in New York City on Monday December 9, 1929.

Upon arriving in New York, the ship's manifest reflects an interesting development. The young man's status had changed from able seaman to workaway. I believe its safe to say that he either changed his plans, or they may have always been the same. It was a tough start. He arrived a little over a month after, Black Tuesday,(October 29, 1929, beginning of the Great Depression). The next ten years would be trying, but he weathered the storm, raised a family. I hope he achieved the american dream. The man was Roosevelt Newball. Wherever he is, I hope he had a good life.

My grandmother was born in the early 1890s in Key West. The Baillou name is not very common and caught my eye.I believe they travelled to Holland after the 1890s. My grand mother, Ruby Baillou's mother remarried Patrick Carey. Henry and Edward are listed as mulattos in th3 census.

Would Bethia perhaps have gotten that surname from the slave's given name? It seems too unusual to have any other explanation.

There are no other details about Mingo on the inventory, other than a value of 120, which is on the higher end of the inventory (of 50 slaves).

I can't help but notice that descendents of your father's siblings are quite interested in their genealogy. My father had to have known your father. Among others, he mentioned Paulson Newball and Willoby Newball, as his uncle Lemuel's grandchildren. These two as you know, were your uncles.
I never met your father, but we have something in common. His granfather Lemuel Newball and my granfather William Timothy Newball, b/k/a as Captain Tim, were brothers, two of the six children of four boys and two girls of Michael Newball and Esther Davidson.
Michael Newball, was one of the six children of five boys and one girl of William Newball, an English planter and his wife Elizabeth Britton, a daughter of planter Thomas Britton. The elder Newball is said to have had two ouside children, boys, with two other women. Circumstantial evidence, appears to indicate that these women may have been african.
Esther Davidson, was the daughter of James Davidson, described as a lay preacher and planter. Her mother, Eulet Bartley was black. Some years ago, through Providencia, oral story, I found out that Eulet, was a bonafide african, brought to the island as a captive child along with her mother and freed at an early age. No word of why she was freed, or what happened to her mother. Hard to research without mannumition documents, but now i tentavily believe I know what happened.
When James Davidson left Providencia, he left an inheritance for his daughter, but it was lost. The story became part of island folklore. I will send you a copy of what I have researched on that subject.
On your grandmother's side there are Downs, Archbold and of course, Newball.
The Downs, are said to have started as Irish in the Corn Islands, a mere 60 miles from San Andres and Providencia. In the 1800's the Atlantic coast of Nicaragua then known as Miskito Coast and the archipielago of San Andres and Providencia, were natural trading partners, the flow of goods and people went in both directions. Today, there are still Downs descendents in the Corn Islands.
She is a great great grandaughter of Scottish Captain Francis Archbold, the first Archbold on the island, through her paternal grandmother, Sarah Archbold.
The most common surname on the island is Archbold, followed by Newball, yet all these pockets of Newballs were considered as different families, unrelated to each other. I was always perplexed by that. In my view, many of the oldtimers, bore a family resemblance down to their often grey eyes, but they were not considered to be related. My grandfather whom I did not meet was born in 1860, and he was only aware of one of his father's sibllings, John Newball. I suspect that there must have been a big rift sometime in the first half of the 1800's. All Newballs in the achipielago hav a common ancestor. Chelita was a great grandaughter of William Newball.
There are ancestors whose names will not appear in history books, because they were not known or considered important. Their stories will not pass into local folklore, because they were not told even in private, or if they did, they got lost along the way, but they are an integral part of island fabric. Well into the 20th century, there were still a substantial number of people on the island described as "whites" and "clear." There was a local saying, and some of these folks would also state it. "Everybody in Providence has some black in them." How true.

I owe you an apology plus an explanation. No,there is no evidence that Roosevelt, had children in Providencia and that was not what I meant. The first time we made contact, you mentioned that your grandfather passed in California, Your name was not mentioned and since I had previously made contact with female descendents of your grandfather's siblings, I wrongly assumed that I was dealing with a female. The second time we made contact you mentioned that your grandfather lived in New York and I saw your name. So my assumption was that I was dealing with a grandson and a grandaugher when in reality there was just one person. Sorry.

You previously brought up the issue of Scottish and English ancestry, but that is only a partial picture.
Your great great great grandparents, Esther Davidson and Michael Newball, had six children, four boys and two girls. One was your great great grandfather, Lemuel Newball. They must have had a stable relationship because all of their children were with each other. Michael was one of the six children of five boys and one girl of English planter, William Newball, and his wife Elizabeth Britton. Esther, was the biracial daughter of Scottish planter and lay preacher James Davidson and his concubine Eulet Bartley.I always knew Eulet was black, but dad could not remember her name. Some years ago when I was in Providencia, through the oral history, I not only found out her name, but that she was actually African. Brought there as a child along with her mother. According to this story the child was set free at early age. No information on the name,or fate of the mother. My thought over the years was that the mother had found a benefactor. I believe I found strong circumstantial evidence of what happened to Eulet Batley's mother.
The story of the lost inheritance left to Esther Davidson by her father James before he left the island is part of Island Folklore.

Sincerely,

Enrique
