Voullaire

I am looking for help in finding more information about Seymour Voullaire's father, Francis. Seymour was born in Guadeloupe in 1832, his mother Letitia is listed as 'widow of Francis' in the 1860 Kennedy address directory of St. Louis, MO, USA so I am assuming Seymour's father's name was Francis and was dead before he, his mother and sister left for the States.
There was a slave record I found as well with Letitia's name and same age given for the slave. How were slaves listed then, did they not have their own names and ages listed, or is it possible that Letitia herself was the slave? This isn't an angle of my family history that I would have ever guessed before. It has been confirmed by family, now, that indeed my Voullaires were Catholic French Carib Creole and NOT the Huguenot French Canadian Indian as the story was told for so many years. Can someone help me find a source for records in Guadeloupe?

Winifred K. Quemper née Smith

Hello there. I'm hoping someone might be able to help me find out about the death of Winifred Kathleen Quemper née Smith in Guadeloupe c. 1951, or anything about her life there.

Winifred was born on 19/09/1915 in Bedfordshire, England but at some point in her teens she travelled to France with her father who took up work in Le Havre. Here the young woman met her husband, Yves Joseph Quemper, who worked for the French shipping company CGT. They married in 1935 but Yves was a womaniser and had several affairs, prompting Winifred to ask CGT to intervene. Some time after 1937 the company redeployed Yves to Guadeloupe where Winifred and their children joined him.

I know nothing about her life or death in Guadeloupe but in May 1951 her 13-year-old son Jack accompanied her coffin from Pointe-à-Pitre back to England to repatriate her remains with her family. He stayed in Essex and was raised by Winifred's ageing parents. Jack would ultimately become my grandfather but led a troubled life, probably greatly affected by the events of this period.

Given the pivotal role Winifred's death played in my family history, I am very interested to learn of the circumstances of her death in Guadeloupe, and any details on her time spent there.

Could anyone suggest the best place to start?

Hi again!
There is something I did not mention before. On March 3 2012 I met with Eduardo Questell. He has done his family tree of the Questell that includes over 50,000 people. His tree on Ancestry? He kept it private. If you to get in touch with him
here is how:
Questell Rodríguez, Eduardo
HC-8 Buzón 870
Ponce, PR 00731-9705
Residencia: (787) 449-1364

If you call him do so after 6pm. He prefers personal calls than e-mail.

This is my e-mail morales.kelvin@gmail.com

Kelvin

I am a great granddaughter of Auguste and Odile Gauthier Maraist. My grandfather was one of their 13 children and in my picture collection I have a copy of Auguste and his wife, along with their 13 children on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary. From what I've heard, I thought his father's name was Alexandre; he did have a son named Victor. My recollection also is that his mother arrived with her two children (Auguste and Eulalie) and that she did teach piana lessons. I also understood that his father was to follow, but he never did. Strange as it may seem, my grandmother was Eulalie's daughter and my grandfather was Auguste's son, thus making my grandparents first cousins. I have a lot more information regarding Augusts's children and grandchildren. What I am interested in is descendents before Auguste, who remained in France or Martinique. I'd be most happy to share what information I have by sending you copies through the mail. I notice the name appears as J. Maraist. Does the "J" stand for James and did you live in New Iberia (where I now live, although I was born and raised in St. Martinville). Anyway, Regarding the acting family, there was a "Jean Marais" who lived in France many years ago, and he was an actor. My understanding also is that "Maraist" and "Marais" are one and the same name, whether they dropped the "t" or we added it is uncertain.
The site had lists that consist of births and marriages of the French immigrants from Saint Barthelemy, which were registered on St. Thomas, starting in late 1800s. The names spellings are exactly as listed in the registers of the Roman Catholic Church. This is a good starting point to tap into the Frenchtown community.

All i know is that Tobias Quetel's father migrated to St.Thomas but we don't know from where, and we don't know if he was born here or if his parents migrated here. Anyone who would like to shed some SERIOUS light on this. Please and Thank You.
