David, I have just finished reading through your posts and I cannot thank you enough for all this information! You have been so very helpful in posting all of this. I have to write it down and let the new information sink in.
This now makes me think that indeed my Voullaire line were once of a Huguenot family as I had been told growing up. All the rest I've learned in the past several years. In an effort to distance himself from the unpleasantness that happened in St. Louis, Missouri, Belmont records on at least 2 different census records that his father was born in Geneva and France and that his mother was also born in France. He had been christened by a French Catholic priest in St. Louis, yet later in life becomes a member of the Huguenot Society in New York City. It seems he was using what he knew of his grandparents. Belmont worked hard to forge a new life disconnected from his parents and the St. Louis history.
Sorry, no I cannot read more than a few words of French more if typed, less if handwritten, but I may have a friend who can help. I did get your email with the document attached, is that why you asked if I could read French?
Thank you again, I'll come back in once I've had a chance to make notes.
Jennifer
