It does seem unusual doesn't it, My wifes G G Grandfather married a scots girl in Sydney in 1882 and seems to have worked as a stoker on the coastal shipping between Sydney and Melbourne. I actually managed to find a slave, Joseph born 1810 on a plantation owned by the Freeman family.
