Dear Malgre77,

Thank so much for this information - and no,I'm not confused about the places. It clears up that mystery.

As for finding Israel's parents, I can't believe it. I thought with a name like Israel, he would be easy to find, but not for me!. So, once again, thank you for taking the trouble to answer my query. Regards, Anne.

I have been told that my husband's great-grandfather and his brothers were in some time of 'situation' or 'scandal' in Wales that lead to him and a few of his brothers leaving the Country and Immigrating to the USA and maybe to Australia???

His Great Grandfather was Thomas H Watkins, born 25 Nov 1864 in either Brec or Monmouthshire. He may have been born in Brec and then moved to Monmouth...

He was the son of John & Elizabeth Sykes Watkins - brothers were: Alfred, Henry, James, John, Arthur, William, Edwin & Charles.

It may be the key to helping me find the siblings or past family beyond John Watkins - the father of these sons.

Thank you!

Charlotte Watkins

Hi Anne
In answer to your query, Trenant is spelt Trinant, Crymlyn is Crumlin. Trinant and Crumlin are very close to each other. Crumlin is mainly at the bottom of the valley, while Trinant is on the hill above Crumlin. They are both as far as the census is concerned in the district of Bedwellty. i have found an entry in the IGI register for Israel Owen, Christening on 3 Jul 1831 at Nebo Independant Church, Penmaen, Monmouthshire. Father is David owen and mother is Elizabeth. I only know of one church that still exists at penmaen but don't think it is Nebo. There is an alternative place for Nebo Church at a place called locally as Cross Penmaen, which is in fact a short distance from Trinant. it is situated between Trinant and Oakdale. Hope this helps and doesn't confuse you. Regards malcolm.

I too have relatives of the name Phillips from Grosmont. Today I visited the graveyard there to look for any family graves and found two 'tombs' baring the Phillips name. The inscriptions were hard to read due to weathering and the one tomb is behind railings and is covered with ivy. But I managed to read the name of Anne Phillips, wife of Henry who died in 1830 aged 87 years hence her birthdate was around 1743. The tomb also bore the name Mary Phillips but date of death was not readable.

Not sure if they are realtives of mine yet but it may help you with your search.

Kind regards

Selina (Great great grandaughter of William Merredith Phillips born in Grossmont during the mid 1800's).

Thanks.

hello, Viv -- I don't know if you are still reading this message board five years later! I recently found this 2004 message of yours to my second cousin, Deb, and would love to ask you a question about Goytre--particularly about a Prosser ancestor of ours, Elizabeth Prosser. She was the mother of Elizabeth Richards (who was the wife of James Gwatkin, my gggrandfather). Elizabeth Prosser is our 'brick wall'. We know she married Walter Richards (1784 in Kemeys Commander), who bought Pentwyn Farm in Goytre, and they had daughters Elizabeth and Anne (born in Bettws Newydd 1785, 1793), but we don't know anything more about Elizabeth Prosser. If you're still reading this board, please let me know if you know anything about the Prossers/Rossers of the Goytrey area. Thank you!!

Ginny

I have a cousin in Carmarthen who is also a keen family historian.

I look forward to hearing from you soon

Best wishes - Maggie

My grandmother was Dorothy May Jones, b1907. Her father was John George Pritchard Jones. Her mother was Alice Taylor. Dorothy had a brother who died, and another brother Basil, who went on to play in dance bands - such as Jack Parnell's.
Dorothy married Leslie Porter, and lived opposite the Cantelo family who I'm sure were related somehow. Can anyone help?
Mike

I am threading together various information about the Prices who originally seem to have been based at Kemeys Inferior - but who then (at least a good number of them) moved to "The Darren" which was a cottage/house on the edge of Wentwood that I suspect was part of the Bertholey Estate. I am not sure whether the Darren was the same as the "New House" which is specifically mentioned on census records and on some records that Joseph Bradney quotes in his history of the Hundred of Usk.

I say I suspect that the Darren was part of the Bertholey estate as it might have coincided with the run down of the estate after Bertholey House burned down in 1905.

I recently walked into Wentwood from the nearby Methodist Chapel in Penycaemawr (where my family worshipped for something like a 100 years and where my great uncle Fred Price preached up until the early 1960's) and found a ruin somewhere where Darren House is marked on the current OS Landranger map.

I don't want to burden you with work on something - and I have found out a fair amount already - but if you happened to know something that was immediately to hand I'd love to hear.

I think my next step might be a visit to Cwmbran records office - but I wouldn't be overly certain what I'd be looking for - any guidance gratefully received.
Hi,
I know you have a lot of requests but im trying to find out what happend to a Charlotte Heron (B:1893) who lived in Newport. She was my Great grandfather, James Heron's sister who was disowned by the family for some reason. Charlotte and the family moved from Belfast to Newport Around about the turn of the century and i have found the 1911 census for them, and even on the census Charlotte has been written in, then crossed out. Know one knows why she was disowned but my grandmother just remebers that no one was allowed to speak of her when she was younger.
Hope you can put me on the right track.
Many Thanks
James

Hi, I would love some help. I'm trying to find my gggrandfather, William Sullivan. My grandfather, James Sullivan was born in Cardiff, Glamorgan in 1874, came out to Australia and married in 1904 in Charters Towers, Queensland where he worked as a miner. According to his marriage certificate, his father was William Sullivan, born in Pontypool, Monmouthshire and his occupation was given as a "man of wars man". His wife was Ann Donegun from Bantry, Ireland. I have found a William and Ann Sullivan on the 1881 Wales census but seem to be suck at the moment. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

In on of the cottages there is the Crossoaks pub and post office and shop was next door. There could have been another Chapel in Penmaen, but if there was it was not there after abt 1960 from personal knowledge.
Regards Malcolm

Hi Malcolm
Thank You for Your reply. I know where the Chapel is, and the Cross oaks. I was hoping that the House was the other side of the Chapel ,below the Graveyard. As used to live in Penmaen in a cottage just below the Chapel. I knew it as Kings Cottage, which as since been demolished. I would love to find out more about Kings Cottage, but No one seems to know anything about it. I have looked at the Censuses but to no avail. Thank You once again.
Regards Linda.
