My Jenkins Family, William and Catherine (maiden name Unk, were in the Port Tenby area when my GGgrandmother Sarah 1825-1886 was born, there is other info that she was born in 1830 too. William was a Chief Officer for the Coast Guard, they later returned to Oystermouth where William (1784-1866) and Catherine (1790-1858) were born. Any info when Sarah was actually born on what date and Catherine's maiden name would be helpful. Thanks, by the way Sarah married Matthew V Jones, a steam Engineer (1830-1907)and their daughter Catherine Jenkins Jones (1859-1889) married my GrGrandfather Robert H F Page 1859, he was a banker.

Hi i was on Ancestry today. I seen your post from a few years ago. I think my grandfather was a member of the Barwicks family that you had met in Pyle.

I am from Cefn Cribwr Bridgend (near Pyle), I seen you was searching for leads on the name Barwick and also seen thaat you was in the Pyle area. My grandmother was a Barwick. My great Grandfather is John James Barwick. He had a few brothers and a sister. I do believe one of his Brothers had lost a leg and also the sister had half a leg.

Also my grandmother had a sister called Winifred Barwick (John James Barwick's daughter). Barwick was her maiden name, she then married Daniel Francis William.

Any information would be greatful.

Thanks
I spoke with mum today and she knew exactly who you are, who your mother was that you were in 'her' GFS ... as I said, Thirroul is a small place. She now lives in Corrimal. I don't remember you as I'm a bit older than you'd be according to mum. Good luck with the research and if I can help further you need only ask.
Dianne

The catalogue number for that book is SLR 929.2 WEB

My brother, John, did live in Coniston for a short while in the 70s, I had forgotten but my mother of course remembered.

We are also direct descendants of Thomas and Clara Lloyd and know the Jones family very well - at least Aunty A and Uncle N and S and R being family and having lived not far from them.

Thirroul was once a 'very small world' where we knew everyone and most of us were related, not so much nowadays I think.

Kerrie, I don't know if my replies here are on a public forum or if they go to you privately. I don't want to have to post in public a long reply.
But briefly, I would recommend to you a book which is in Wollongong Reference Library which will probably answer all of your questions regarding the Webb Family. "A Webb Family 1750 - 2000 in London and South Wales". Be careful to get the right one as there is another book in there on the Webb's but not my Webb family.
The Webb you are interested in, Arthur Frederick Webb was born on 1st Dec, 1887 in Rhigos, near Hirwain and came to Australia in 1907 with his parents, Frederick, b.1863 and Emily (Rhys). He lived in Bulli and worked as a coal miner. His sister, Annie May also came to Australia with the family.
He is a grandson of Thomas and Clara Lloyd Webb.

thanks Dianne
I came across your photo gallery in Flickr and shared it with the Thirroul Jones family a month or so back.

Arthur Frederick Webb was born in Hirwaun Wales in 1888 came to Australia and in 1912 married Ida McKenzie Hicks, 2nd youngest child of the 10 living children of Henry Thomas Hicks and wife Mary Ann (nee McKenzie).

Previously living in Austinmer at Sidmouth (believed to have been built by Captain Robert Marsh Westmacott), the Hicks had moved to their Thirroul farm Mt Gilead, you will recognise street names like Mt Gilead and Hicks.

I suspect that the Welsh born Arthur Frederick Webb may have been a nephew, or great nephew, of Thomas Webb and wife Clara (lloyd)- hence how Arthur Frederick would have ended up in Thirroul, when he came to Australia - but I am not sure of the date he came. And I am yet to find the precise connection between Arthur Frederick Webb's father Frederick Webb and Thomas Webb - though both were from Hirwaun.

Arthur Frederick Webb set up a high successful building contract business, AF Webb, doing many government and private projects across NSW eg West Wollongong TAFE.
http://hicksfamilynorthillawarra.wordpress.com/2012/11/29/id...
http://hicksfamilynorthillawarra.wordpress.com/2013/05/08/un...
He seemed to initially run the business from Thirroul, possibly they were living with Ida's mum Mary Ann at Everest, Seaview Terrace, after Henry's death. Later they moved to Chatswood - had 5 kids.

some people have confused Arthur Frederick Webb with Arthur Mervyn Webb, a grandson of Thomas Webb or even thought him a son of Thomas Webb which isn't possible ..

so possibly Arthur Frederick Webb is a relative of yours as well ?
by the way I believe that when your brother was in a share house in Coniston in the mid 1970's we were renting the flat underneath

Hello

Tried a search on Google and turned up nothing. You obviously searched with more information than I did. What were the names of the properties either side of Odela House in the Census, for a bearing as to where the house is today? Perhaps a name as to who was living at the time of the Census might help.

The name might have gone but the house should be there as a shop etc., or even be covered up by a sign!

Gareth

The only mention on Google is of a Jewish family named Freeman living there in 1922, just two years before, which is intriguing. I'd love to know if it was just a family home or not.

I have checked the 1861 census for King Street, Other streets nearby are Chapel Street and Wind Street, if you look on
streetmap.co.uk you can see the present day streets, none of these are included, but there is a Chapel Street in the next village Tirphil, also bordering Brithdir is Phillipstown, I have a feeling some of these places were separated from Brithdir at a later date, Rowley

Hi

Hi

I have Thomas Davies, born 1770 in Bettws - he was a miller at Cowbridge Mill in 1820, but had retired to Llangynwyd by 1851 (with his son, David)- where he was buried in 1853.

I have located three children - Thomas Woodwall Davies (1794-1841)surgeon who died in Cowbridge (at least 11 kids); Samuel WoodFORD Davies (1794-1820 )died Cowbridge, buried St Athan; and David Woodwall DAvies (1802-1865) born in Bristol, married three times and died in Pyle in 1865.

My only clue so far is that I have found the marriage of a Thomas DAVID to a Barbara WOODFORD in Penmark in 1782. Perhaps other children were born in Bristol......?

Martha (the second Mrs David W Davies was Martha BALLARD, daughter of Benjamin Ballard of Llantwit, but originally from Llanblethian.

Hi Graham.
Many thanks. I agree, lot's more to uncover (hopefully), there seems to be more questions than answers sometimes.
If I come up with anything, I will let you know.
Karl.

Hi Karl
Catherine and Ellen are on the marriage index for St. John's
Aberdare, both daughters of Jeremiah. Both difficult to find afterwards. 1871 Catherine and family with her brother John but nothing afterwards.
From what I can find it seems that Ellen and husband Henry Lawrence ended up at St. Maryleborne in London, first at Union Street and then the workhouse by 1891. More work required to sort this out.
Graham

Hi Graham.

Thank you for the info on the Lloyd and the Charles families.

Also, thanks for the two other Finn family members. On the 1871 census Catherine and her children are listed as a boarders at John Finn's house. I can't seem to find much on Catherine or Ellen, May I ask which records connected them to Jeremiah?
Karl.

Slade building was on the main road as you drove out of the top of Gilfach Goch on the left hand side, the rear of which overlooked the colliery. I know that it was a large building with a transient population. Downstairs was a bakery and cakeshop, and that was my Great Grandfathers profession so he may have even owned the building as prior to this they owned the first house in Glamorgan Terrace. The electoral roll and other documents show lots of comings and goings. I would have thought that it was almost definitely a lodging house for miners. My uncle, Cyril Jones was born there.
