I did send an email to your site address
eirwengranelli@yahoo.co.uk - but it was returned. Email me at my address
ozzi@supanet.com so we can 'chat' more. I know all about the internment of John- he stayed at Merthyr
Police Station and was then released to stay with the 'boys' at Ynysgau - my Grandfather shared a bed with him! and his father had to 'chaparone' him - As for Billy, boxing was big (and still is) in the family - my uncle was
Welsh champion in the early 1980s and my father, his brother boxed too. My grandfather Danny was well know in the
Boxing field, and trained the Merthyr ABA at the
Labour Club, Merthyr. At a fight Mary went to watch and my Grandfather was there. (they are cousins) There are still some Gallozze (how they spell it!) in Ppridd, and I had heard about the Grants. In 1901 Census (take a look at it) Luigi GR Gr Grandfather (the first GALEOZZI - Spelling changes due to poor literacy skills of the census enumerators and accent!) changed his name to Lewis Lewis and was at
Taff St, Pontypridd with Joseph and Johanna (Aunty
Nana as she was known - I think it was her that married the Voulkes Family).
Will pop the info I have on our tree - We are looking for photos of the ancestors, so if your husband has any of Mary or her sisters Johanna & Magaret (Maggie) that would be great. I have some photo's around 1900, that may be useful for you too. Its brilliant that you have got intouch - In Merthyr Library I have copies of the Newletters I did when I first began tracing the tree, which I will pop in the post to you and a print out of the tree sheet so far. With your permission I will now add Mary - Tony's line onto the tree and you can fill in the blanks (dob etc) and send back.
The original first 'located' record for Luigi is
GALEAZZI born January 1st 1848 in BOLANO,
LA SPEZIA Italy (Nr
Genoa). A figure maker, who came to
UK around 1869 - Earliest known date in the
UK is April 1871 at Plymouth,
Devon - he died 1906 at
Mill St Pontypridd as Lewis GALEOZZIE aka 'Lewis Lewis' and was buried at Cefn Cemetry Merthyr. He fathered 15 children (mainly boys) who then had many grandchildren, great grandchildren which again male dominant line that had the surname (and its various spellings)GALLOZZE/ GALLEOZZIE/ GALEOZZI/ GALUOZZI/ GALIOUCHI/ - When Luigi arrived in
UK 1869 he was the only
GALEAZZI in
UK, from researching thousand of records at
Kew / FRC in
London, all persons today with the surname are decendend from him. During the WW1 2 of the his sons changed their names to 'Lewis' to fight for
UK, on recommendation of the
Army. Some much to tell you, but you can read it all of the Family Tree Report.
Recommend read
Lemon,
Lime & Sasparilla by
Hughes - the family are mentioned on page 27 - good insight to immigration in the valleys (merthyr and Pontypridd).
As for the Granelli side, if you email me at my address will send you the
Italian weblinks to help with the search - but start with the earliest known / possible date of arrival in
UK - if I come accross the name will let you know - I do remember searching when I had
Marys Marriage record (1903), but didn't persue to it - will check my notes!!
Great to hear from you - have told the 'family' the tree keeps growing!
Best Wishes Marie
