Having trouble locating Gr Gr Grandfather Luigi Galouizzi (1871 Census Plymouth and earliest spelling!) or Lewis Galleozzie (Death Cert) who died in 1905 at 25 Mill St, Pontypridd. A plaster figure mould maker, family letters tell about his mould 'shop' ( backyard of house?) in Pontypridd and that he decorated various Pubs in the Town. I understand that Mill st has now been knocked down and replaced by a carpark. Anyone familiar with this street or know any figure makers (trade). Children of Lewis and wife Johanna were 13 (most born in Plymouth & Merthyr) with the last 4 probably brought up in Pontypridd - Mary Catherine, Joseph, Patrick, Maggie & Johanna. Stories are one of the dtrs married into the 'Grinelli' family. Family surname has changed throughout the years Galleozzi, Gallozze, Galeazzi, Galouzzi. If it starts with a G and has two Z it is problably a descendent of Luigi (lewis). Both Lewis and Johanna are buried in Merthyr Tydfil (1904 &1906 died). Any info appreciated.

Thanks Rrichard for your help, but I already have this information and yes, Louis was my gr.gr. Grandfather. I have evidence of some parts of his life history from 1848 - 1953 (in Italy) then he is 'found' in Plymouth in 1871- left in between 1872 - 1874 to Merthyr where son Micheal was born at Picton St in April 1874. Then dates and places link the rest of his children to Merthyr, until the death of his wife Johanna at 25 Mill st, Pontypridd in June 1904, then his own death in April 1906 also at 25 Mills St. Both are buried in Merthyr Tydfil. Have searched the 1901 Census for these areas and other bordering Census areas, but no luck with the Surname ( various spellings) or 'Figure makers /plasterers etc. I found the 1901 required very specific enteries to make a search. Any advice or next steps? Thanks for taking the time
regards marie

Hi Eirwen - Great to hear from the Granelli side. Your William 'Billy' - was talked about by the family. I have a lot of information on the tree GALEAZZI / Galleozzie side from Merthyr and Italy, so send me your address and I will send the tree to you, that I have completed so far. As you know family history is never ending - and its great that I can add in Mary's line in too, now that you can fill in the gaps - All I had was that Mary married John Grinelli and ran a Guest House in Pontypridd (Rhydfellyn) and that 'Billy' stayed with Mary at Ynysgau during WW1 with his uncles as John was 'interned' at Merthyr Police Station. Perhaps you know any truth to this family story?
Looking forward to hearing from you. Marie

Hi Maria. We are thrilled to have contacted a direct reative to Tony on his Grandmothers side of the family Mary Galleozzi, i have searched the internet for many months but the spelling differs so much i,ve had no luck, untill i decided to put a message on for others looking for the Galleozzi family and could not believe it when i saw your message and the reply from some-one who said about them living in mill st in pontypridd, Anthonys (Tony) my husband,s father was Billy Granelli he was Mary,s son , and did a lot of boxing when he was a young man, they had 7 sons ,Cyril, louis, harold, william, john, hughie, and francis, 3 daughters ilene, rosie, and annie, johnny is still alive in pontypridd, and so is harold, it was harold who told me that his father was interned to merthyr during the war, francis went to live in eire i believe ,and all the others are dead, i would love to have the family tree that you have on the Galleozzis there are a family who live just outside pontypridd who my husband said were Galleozzi but changed their name to Grant, he said he had heard it was something to do with finding work after the war, they are cousins of his on marys side, also there are Vaulks living donw here who are belonging to marys too, i believe they were Marys sisters children, but cant find out a address for them, could you give me any tips on finding Tonys grandfathers birth in italy, i now the date and the village but cant find anything on the internet i am new to all this ,he was Giavanni Granelli My Address is 25, Danylan Road Measycoed, Pontypridd, mid glam cf37 1es.Many Thanks Eirwen

I did send an email to your site address eirwengranelli@yahoo.co.uk - but it was returned. Email me at my address ozzi@supanet.com so we can 'chat' more. I know all about the internment of John- he stayed at Merthyr Police Station and was then released to stay with the 'boys' at Ynysgau - my Grandfather shared a bed with him! and his father had to 'chaparone' him - As for Billy, boxing was big (and still is) in the family - my uncle was Welsh champion in the early 1980s and my father, his brother boxed too. My grandfather Danny was well know in the Boxing field, and trained the Merthyr ABA at the Labour Club, Merthyr. At a fight Mary went to watch and my Grandfather was there. (they are cousins) There are still some Gallozze (how they spell it!) in Ppridd, and I had heard about the Grants. In 1901 Census (take a look at it) Luigi GR Gr Grandfather (the first GALEOZZI - Spelling changes due to poor literacy skills of the census enumerators and accent!) changed his name to Lewis Lewis and was at Taff St, Pontypridd with Joseph and Johanna (Aunty Nana as she was known - I think it was her that married the Voulkes Family).
Will pop the info I have on our tree - We are looking for photos of the ancestors, so if your husband has any of Mary or her sisters Johanna & Magaret (Maggie) that would be great. I have some photo's around 1900, that may be useful for you too. Its brilliant that you have got intouch - In Merthyr Library I have copies of the Newletters I did when I first began tracing the tree, which I will pop in the post to you and a print out of the tree sheet so far. With your permission I will now add Mary - Tony's line onto the tree and you can fill in the blanks (dob etc) and send back.
The original first 'located' record for Luigi is GALEAZZI born January 1st 1848 in BOLANO, LA SPEZIA Italy (Nr Genoa). A figure maker, who came to UK around 1869 - Earliest known date in the UK is April 1871 at Plymouth, Devon - he died 1906 at Mill St Pontypridd as Lewis GALEOZZIE aka 'Lewis Lewis' and was buried at Cefn Cemetry Merthyr. He fathered 15 children (mainly boys) who then had many grandchildren, great grandchildren which again male dominant line that had the surname (and its various spellings)GALLOZZE/ GALLEOZZIE/ GALEOZZI/ GALUOZZI/ GALIOUCHI/ - When Luigi arrived in UK 1869 he was the only GALEAZZI in UK, from researching thousand of records at Kew / FRC in London, all persons today with the surname are decendend from him. During the WW1 2 of the his sons changed their names to 'Lewis' to fight for UK, on recommendation of the Army. Some much to tell you, but you can read it all of the Family Tree Report.
Recommend read Lemon, Lime & Sasparilla by Hughes - the family are mentioned on page 27 - good insight to immigration in the valleys (merthyr and Pontypridd).
As for the Granelli side, if you email me at my address will send you the Italian weblinks to help with the search - but start with the earliest known / possible date of arrival in UK - if I come accross the name will let you know - I do remember searching when I had Marys Marriage record (1903), but didn't persue to it - will check my notes!!
Great to hear from you - have told the 'family' the tree keeps growing!
Best Wishes Marie
