The Register Office for Rhondda Cynnon Taf is actually in Pontypridd. Contact them, giving them the reference numbers for all three births, and the father's name for the one you want. Hopefully they other two births will have different father's names??? You should then be able to purchase the correct certificate.

Your message in 1999 mentions a Mary Griffiths who married William Price in 1867. My Great Grandfather had a younger sister Mary and I seem to remember that she went to Australia. My Great Grandfathers name was Thomas Prichard Griffiths and he was born in Llanrwst (Wales) in 1830. His father was Peter Griffiths who was a congregational minister of the church in Llanrwst. Thomas and Mary had brothers Peter, Richard, David and John. Are we talking about the same people I wonder? Mervyn Rossini now living in France.

You say he was born near Pontypridd? If very close the family
could be included in the Pontypridd census of 1901. This could save money on many birth certificates and would give all members of the family (including the father and mothers christian names, besides any older siblings.
Good luck, Derek.

My great grandfather was born near Pontypridd in September 1899. His name was William Henry Jones

The problem I have is, there are 3 William Henry Jones's whose births were registered at this time. I have no idea who his mother is, and all I know about his father is he was called John Jones.

Short of purchasing all 3 birth certificates and finding out if John fathered one of these Williams, what is the best thing to do?

Hi Sandra,
thanks for the reply,
I have the family on Census records from 1871 to 1911, through Swansea, Loughor, Llanguick, Birmingam and Aston Manor, Mary's surname is the sticking point, as there is a fair few William Harris' in Kidwelly / Wales,
unfortunately finances prevent the purchase of more birth certificates, so I'm looking to see if I can expand the knowledge through the message boards, hoping there may be someone out there already with the knowledge
Regards & thanks
Neil
I have not been able to find mention of Walter in any census other than '1881 and 1911. The Walter I have was born in 1881. After that I have been able to follow him to Canada, etc. etc. until his death. Likewise with his brother Owen. His info. comes from the 1911 census. I found no birth record, but have been able to follow him since the 1911 census until his death in Vancouver, B.C. Canada in 1970.
I found out from an elderly aunt that Walter grew up in an orphanage in England. She knew no more than that. Another family member said he had heard that the family was very poor and had to give their children up??? As to whether some children were born in Ireland, that could be a possibility, but I don't really know. I do know that Co. Cork suffered greatly during the potato famine and againg family lore said they left for Wlaes. Given that time frame Margaret Thorpe would have been nearing the end of her child bearing years.
Unfortunately, since I am unable to find any mention of the parents in Wales, and both Walter and Owen list that as their birth place, I can't find any children with a Margaret and William (they were both from Ireland ... possibly County Cork ... have not found any marriage records there); I was hoping there might be some documentation other than census to try and track adoptions/orphanages/workhouses. I have not been successful in Ancestry.
I am thinking I have hit the proverbial brick wall, until some other clue comes along.
Thank you for your interest. Very much appreciate it.
Linda, Ont. Canada

The only way to find out if he was in an orphanage would be to track his locations in the various census (1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911).

I thought I would try and see if I could trace Walter Walsh born 1881 through the censuses. I started searching on a broad basis, and spotted in the 1881 census a Walter Walsh aged 19 who was born in Ireland and living in Pontypridd (which is not that far from Pontypool), and wonder whether there is any connection to your family. (Census refs: Piece: 5300; Folio: 48; Page: 25).

Going back to Walter born 1881, I can’t find him in any census until the 1911 Census, when he is married and living in Southall, Middlesex, (which is today part of greater London) and working as a chimney sweep (Census refs: Piece: 6800; Schedule Number: 59). Also there is his brother Owen. The census says that Walter and his wife have been married for 8 years, and have had 4 children, but only 1 is still living.

Walter David Walsh married Clara Louisa Wilkinson in Kensington, London in Qtr Apr 1903 (Vol. 1a Page 366). The parish record which Ancestry have says that his father, William, was deceased, and had been a “cab proprietor”. Clara’s father is not listed, but there are 2 Wilkinons who were the witness. Neither appear on the 1901 census with Clara. Walter and David were living at the same address and as Clara was only 17 she would have needed her father’s permission!

Clara is listed in the 1901 Census with her parents and siblings in Islington, London. I am now very confused as in the 1891 census, she is listed with different parents, who could well the witnesses to her marriage… (Piece: 38; Folio: 181; Page: 34).

I can’t find wither Walter or Owen before 1911. Could they have been brought up in Ireland?
Pontypool is a town in Monmouthshire which is in South East Wales.

Walter Walsh's birth was registered in Jan Qtr of 1881, in the Pontypool Registration District - Vol 11A Page 134

I cannot see a birth registration for Owen Walsh anywhere at about the right time.

I can't find any likely matches in the 1881 Census in the UK.

You can use the registration details listed above for Walter to purchase his birth certificate direct from the General Registry Office (GRO) at a cost of £9.25. His birth certificate will tell you when and where he was born, the names of his parents, and his father's occupation which might help finding them.

The GRO web site is https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

Regards
Megan

Sandra, many, many thanks for the information. Yes, I'm afraid the information about Gerald is a bit confusing. I thought Brooks was like a middle name but it seems to be a family name. I wonder why Gerald changed the name so many times...? Maybe he was trying to disconnect from roots? Why? The family name McEllistrim could be the family name of his mum Julia? Do you have any idea where I could find more information?
Again, thank you very much.

Could anyone help me with some information?
I'm looking for information about Gerald McEllistrim. It seems he was born at Cardiff, Wales, England on Dec 21st 1908, but some papers point he was Irish.
His parents names were John McEllistrim + Julia (but she's not sure). Gerald was a merchant navy seaman and he travelled around the world. On April 1936 he asked for American Naturalization and on the papers of petition says that his name was "Gerald Montrio (formerly Gerald McEllistrim or Gerald McEllistrim Brooks). It's a mistery the reason for which he changed his paternal name McEllistrim to Montrio.
He married in USA with an Argentinian woman and had 2 children a boy (called Gerald like him) and a girl. His children brought the adopted name Montrio.
His son Gerald dissappeared with a friend (they both had 15 and 13 years old) and never had been found. Now this story is a cold case recently reopened and published in the NAMUs data base.
His daughter says her father never told them about his origins, his family. She knows very little about his father.
Why he changed his family name?

information William David Walsh

I am looking for information on William David Walsh and his wife Margaret Thorpe or Thorp who lived in or around Pontypool ... census info on sons Walter b. ard. 1881 and Owen ard. 1884 gives this town as place of birth. The 2 boys ended up in Canada.
William and his wife supposedly had 12-13 children but could not afford them. I have not been successful in finding birth reg. for any other Walsh children. Apparently William and/or Margaret were from Cork ... don't know whether this is county or town.
I am hoping someone can shed some light on this illusive couple.
Cheers,
Linda from Ontario, Canada

Hi, Sandra I have found baptisms for a Sarah Powell 1785, Abigale Powell 1787, Johnathan Powell 1788 Llancroyd Carmarthshire, David Powell (gggg grandfather) and Rees Powell 1793 all on freereg. Besides Johnathan they were all baptized in Bettws Mill St. (Cong) Newport with father Howell Powell. If I have the right baptism for David Powell why in all the census's is he saying he was born in Henllys. Then I've got the problem of Howell there seems to be so many of them. There is also a Charles Powell born c.1775 living in Henllys but I'm unsure of his birthplace, someone has changed Bausin to Bryngwyn in the 1851 census. I don't know if he could be an uncle or cousin of David's.
Deb
My gggg grandfather was David Powell and I have found him in the census's up until 1871 and then he passed away in 1875. In the census's he states he was born in Henllys, Monmouthshire, Wales but I can only find a baptism for a David Powell in Bettws mill St (cong) Newport father Howell Powell and a few siblings.
I've already tried to tie in the siblings and look for the birth place of Howell and his wife to no avail and ordered a death certicate for a Howell Powell in Aberystruth which is where David moved.
I don't know if I'm missing something.
I don't know where to go from here, any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
deb
Thanks so much for this information. We had guessed as much since I posted the question, as my mother was born out of wedlock and was born in 1934. Do you have any other information on it, or perhaps where I can gain some?

My Grandma, Christine Margaret Bradley Barnes is from Wales. Neath Wales I believe. She's deceased. I'm trying to find her brothers/sisters and any family she has there.
I know she had a sister named Hilda Bradley, I think a brother bill too.

My Grandma was born November 10, 1903. She died Oct 24, 2001. If you can help me, I would really love it!!!! Thank you so much!!! Beth Lepper
