Elwyn B Tilley was born in Pontypridd in the July Quarter of 1923 Vol 11A Page 1348 – Mother’s maiden name Phillips. Birth certificates can be ordered from: https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp, and this will tell you his parents names.

However, if you look at the 1939 Register you will see that he was born on the 8 July 1923, and in 1939 was an errand boy for a green grocer living at 93 Llewellyn Street, Rhondda, together with William Tilley, (born 1885), Florence Tilley (born 1888), Ada Tilley (born 1918) who subsequently married a Mr Holder (see below), and two others whose records are closed, which suggests that there were/are two other siblings.

Elwyn married Eva W Smith in 1947 in Bucklow, Cheshire, and Josephine Wynn in 1971 in Birmingham. He died in 1996 in Birmingham, and is buried in Witton Cemetery, Birmingham. Copies of his marriage certificates and death certificates can be obtained from the GRO site address already given above.

I haven’t been able to identify a likely marriage for Elwyn’s parents, so its possible that if Florence was his mother that she may have been married previously – not uncommon around the time of World War 1. That is why it is important to get his birth certificate as that will definitely confirm his parents full names.

Ada Tilder married Francis I Holder in 1942 in Pontypridd.
