Mayinia PARRY or PERRY

I have come across the name Mayinia in searching for one of my ancestors who came from Wales. The name appears to be fairly rare and I was wondering if it was used as a nickname for another name or if it was used in certain parts of the country or just anything about it that may help me put them in a specific location in Wales. She would have been born about 1810.

I can't see a single reference to a "Mayinia" in Wales (or England, Scotland or Ireland either) in any of the censuses from 1840 to 1911?

I can't see any in the USA censuses either. Where have you found her so far?

On Ancestry she's listed as a passenger on the barque "Lord Wellington" which arrived in NY from Liverpool on 14 NOV 1827. She is 18 and traveling with John Parry, age 28 who I'm almost positive is my 3rd G-Grandfather. He is traveling with a couple named Bowen and 3 children. I thought it must be another relative as his wife's name was Gwen but now I'm not so sure, which is why I wanted to know more about the name. But if it's not a common or even occasional name in the UK then I don't know where it derives from. It would just be interesting to know. Thanks for the response. Kathy

OK I can see them now. Notice that Ancestry give three versions ""Mayrnia", "Mayinia" and "Maymia"!
It's possible that they are all corruptions of a Welsh name? But I can't think of one that fits.

Are you assuming that John and "Mayinia" are married and that Elizabeth, John & James are their children? That would suggest that "Mayinia" was aged 12 when Elizabeth was born???

I know that Elizabeth is not John's daughter. However, she is somehow related to him as their families stayed in close touch with each other here in the US. They also kept in touch with the Bowen family. I think that the James Parry may have actually been Bowen as the Bowen's had a son James who was born in Wales at the same time as this child. John could have been the Perry's son as they had a son John who died after they came over. There is an age discrepancy but it's not major. It's possible that Mayinia could be a sister to Elizabeth and not be married to John at all. There are so many ways to look at this!

It's getting more complicated! After arriving in New York where did they live in the USA?
