Hi

I wonder if anyone can help please? I have Thomas Barnabas, born about 1669 possibly in Clynnog-Fawr, Caernarvonshire. He married Mary Griffith in 1694 and died between 1699 and 1703. I am desperate to move on past him to his ancestors, but am struggling to get the information. Thank you in advance.

I too am researching "Jones" from Llanfairfechan. My grandmother was Ellen C Jones who moved to Lancashire sometime after 1911. Her father was Owen and her mother was Margaret ( i suspect this may have been a 2nd marriage for Owen). I would like to get moe information about Owen, his family and grandparents etc. I have found a family which i think may be the right one, but not sure.

Any help ould be appreciated.

Thank you so much for that info! I had no idea I could get a refund if not correct Father name. I had images of buying 100 certificates for all the Hugh Hughes' in the region. I think I eliminated the latter 3 you listed by refering to the census's and finding Hugh still in England after my Hugh's arrival in Australia. I will try purchasing a certif or two and cross my fingers they listed father's middle name.
Thanks again, I really appreciate it.
Tess

Re: Hugh Hughes b 1847 Caernarvonshire, father John Thomas Hughes, help!?

Based on the date of birth, then it should have been registered in either the April or July quarters of 1847. April quarter would be the most likely.

If he was born in the Caernarvon registration district then the following are possibles:
1847 Qtr Apr Vol 27 Page 343
1847 Qtr Jul Vol 27 Page 313

However, if he was born elsewhere in Caernarvonshire, such as Llanystumdwy, there are other possibilities:
Bangor Registration District 1847 Qtr Apr Vol 27 Page 297
Pwllheli Registration District 1847 Qtr Apr Vol 27 Page 370 (I would guess that Llanystumdwy comes under Pwllheli)
Bangor Registration District 1847 Qtr Jul Vol 27 Page 274

Hugh Hughes Hughes (yes that really is the registered name) Pwllheli Registration District 1847 Qtr Apr Vol 27 Page 360

Hugh Richard Hughes Bangor Registration District 1847 Qtr Apr Vol 27 Page 289. There is a baptism for this one on 9 May 1847, so that eliminates him.

You can buy birth certificates from the General Register Office (GRO) for £9.25 each. However, you don't need to "permenantly" buy every one to find the correct one. If you order on line from
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp
you will find a box that allows you to enter his father's name, and so even if you order all those listed above, you will only get the one that has the identified father's name on it. For any that don't you will get an instant full refund.

If you put in John Thomas Hughes that will definately narrow the field down. However, if the answer came back that none had that father listed, then you should consider going through the same exerise but omitting his middle name, as these were often not used consistantly.

A birth certificate will tell you where he was born, his father's name and occupation and his mother's name and maiden name.

This isn't checked but might be what you're looking for. 1842 James Dabbs (Shropshire) marries Eleanor PURSLOW. In 1851 they have a son, Theophilus who later marries Ann Beaman. Their son Thomas P was born in 1885 in Horsehay, Shropshire. If this info the right, let me know as we are probably very, very distantly related.

She went on to live in Llandegwning, having at least one daughter , Elizabeth Jane Jones ( b 1894) .
Mary Owens might have been associated with a farm called Bryngwdyn Uchaf in Llanarmon, but I cannot find the slightest trace of her on any census or record prior to her marriage, and neither can I find her on the 1901 census. Does anyone have any idea where she was 1860 - 1892 , please ?

Hugh Hughes b 1847 Caernarvonshire, father John Thomas Hughes, help!?

Hi,
Hugh Hughes was born on the 21st May 1847 in Caernarvon, Wales.
I know Hugh 'jumped ship' approx. 1869-1870 in Wallaroo, South Australia, and married Mary Jane Crouch in 18 May 1872 and lived and died in Wallaroo. On his Marriage certificate he lists his father as John Thomas Hughes but I have been unable to find a man of this name with a child named Hugh in the Census records, apart from those families who clearly have a Hugh still in the country after the time I know Hugh was in Australia.
I have found a family of John Hughes(42, shoemaker, born Llanystumdwy, Caernarvonshire, Wales), wife Ann(36, born Llanaelhaiarn, Caernarvonshire, Wales as were all children below) in the 1851 census with children Ellen(11), Jane(8), John(6), Hugh (4), and Laura(2), and again in Census 1861 with children John(17, stone dresser), Hugh(14, stone dresser), David(9), William(6) and Robert(3).
I am not sure if this is MY Hugh and father John Thomas or not. My Hugh did go on to name some of his children "Robert John", "Margaret Ann" (perhaps giving his parents' names as middle names to his eldest 2 children), and other children were named "David" and "William" perhaps after the young brothers he left behind.....although for sure those names are very common for the time and location.
According to family heresay Hugh was the ship navigator but his "x" mark on the marriage cert. shows his illiteracy so this is unlikely. I found an informal record (newspaper article I think from memory) mentioning able-seaman Hugh Hughes (correct age and from Wales) on a ship "Compadre" from home port Liverpool that was in South Australia at that time but I have misplaced it(Yikes!). He disappeared from the crew list after that (ship was going through court cases for damaged goods brought from the UK and was in the newspapers a bit). Not sure if it is MY Hugh though. There seems to be no formal listing of him ever being on a crew. I do not know if he had siblings. I do not know his mother's first OR last name. I would love any information on this man's life prior to arrival in Australia. I guess I need to seek out his birth certificate....?
Kind regards,
Tess

You should buy the marriage certificate, and then that will give you the names of the 2 fathers. Use this link to buy direct from the General Register Office which is cheaper than using a third party. http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

Using that you should then be able to search the 1851 and 1841 Censuses and see if you can find both parents with their children.

You could also buy Hannah's birth certificate, but you will need her father's name before doing so, as there are 4 such births registered in Anglesey in 1841.

David's birth predates civil registration so you will need to look for a baptism record.

I've got numerous Owen family links that trace back to Clynnog, Caernarvonshire, Wales from 1890's and well back. But Welsh records seem scarce, pre-1841, and Welsh surnames can be SO confusing.
Descendants include William Thomas Owen (1846-1901); Evan Owen (1815-1874) and wife Ellin Thomas (1812-1882); Hugh Owen (??-??) and wife Ellin Evans (??-??) married 1813 in Clynnog; and more.
Hints or FREE search suggestions greatly appreciated.

Hi, apologies on the slow reply! It's an area I've only just started to look at myself. I had some information from my uncle on the names he'd found in our family, however he'd only gone straight back, so at the moment I'm trying to find out where he fits in on the family tree. Yes, that's the Hugh Griffith I'm referring to.

My first post got lost in the Ancestry system while its server was down.
There is only one cemetary in Llandwrog and it is quite young as cemetaries go and not that large. My photo below covers most of it.
http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj117/WelshGen/Genealogy/...
The cemetary at Dinas where the Welsh Highland Railway stops is a more likely burial place for your ancestor as it is a lot older and so are the gravestones.

Hello,
Just a thought regarding your Griffith ancestors. I have a great great grandmother from Llanrug called Mary Griffiths born late 1700s - her father was a Griffith Prichard. This is where the dreaded patronymics come into play. It was used in Caernarfonshire and Merioneth until the early 1800s.
So you have to check carefully as Mary was given her father's Christian name for her surname. ie Mary daughter of Griffith Prichard. Mary verch Griffith in Welsh. Her brothers too. They lived in the Bryngwyn area of Llanrug and are on the 1841 and 1851 cenuss. There isnt a Hugh though. Good luck happy new year and regards
Menai Dillon.

Hello-
My original message from 2007 has sereral surnames references throughout the thread. I am assuming you are refering to Hugh Emrys Griffith son of William and Mary Griffith was born May-30-1912 in Marian-glas, Anglesey, Wales, and died May-14-1980 in London, England. He married Margaret Belgunder von Dechend 1947.

I am still trying to find where my GRIFFITH andestors are connected with the above mentioned GRIFFITH family. Where does your line fit in?
It's wonderful to hear from you.
I did once use Genes reunited but found it less confusing to stick to ancestry rather than attempting connections on both:)
The pics would be great, do you have them on ancestry?
So which line does your husband come from Robert Parry? My line is:
> Robert Parry & Martha Evan
> William Parry & Mary Bowen
> Edith Parry & Theophilus Vaughan
> Jemima Vaughan & Trevor Thomas (my grand parents)

Regards
Dawn x

I can see from censuses that your family lived at 'Llain Hir'.
Remarkably, at one time in the 19th century, the neighbours in the next three houses were all distant relatives of mine !(I know that doesn't help you all that much !. The area has a monthly, welsh-language newspaper called 'Eco'r Wyddfa'which contains local news and articles for Brynrefail, Llanberis, Deiniolen and Llanrug. You'd be more likely to contact any living relatives like that.If you tell me what you want to say, I'll translate it into Welsh, but a contact of some sort would be needed. I'll try and get the details for you. There's reference to a 'Pitts' in Llanrug. Do you know details of your ancestry ? - its probably possible to work out a generation or two quite quickly.

Thank you so much for responding!! I am hoping to connect with any relatives who are still living or anyone who may remember my family. I know this is a long shot, as my Nain and her family left for America in 1924. My Nain was born in 1917. Her sister, Elizabeth, was born in 1907. When I was in Wales in 1977, I was incredibly lucky enough to meet a cousin. All I remember was his first name was Will and he was well into his late 80s at that time. I also recall meeting relatives with the last name of Pitts, but I can not recall what village they live in. There are also siblings of my Nain's named John and Mair.
I thank you I advance for your considerations.
Regards,
Katherine

Are you looking for ancestors, relatives , etc ? . I've got the MIs for Llanddeiniolen, and my grandmother came from Brynrefail. I wonder if you've got further information (DOBs, homes )
