I have here a copy of a death registration for William Arbuckle for 1879. He was a school master in Barra but he was born in Strath on Isle of Skye. Williams parents were John Arbuckle & Margaret ??????. William was married to Effy McGiggan but I do not know if she was from Strath or he married her when he went to Barra. Margaret's name is hard to read. I have looked at other sites and wondered if the name McGiggan could have changed to another spelling. Any help deciphering this would be appreciated.

Many Thanks Angus. I do think you have cleared-up my mystery. The line I am researching is ARBUCKLE. I have just received William's death Cert. and it states he is age 72 but I do feel he is only about 54/55. I found it surprising that Effy signed with an X and William's father was Superintendent of Schools and William was a Schoolmaster. The death cert does name her as Effy Arbuckle so either he married her after 1881 or the regisry office just assumed she was married. The poor girl, being illiterate didn't know what she was signing. Maybe he did marry her after 1881 as he had no one else to leave thing to. ??? The name McGiggan does have a dot over the "i". William's father John was born in North Uist, Aug. 1,1798 to William Arbuckle & Flora MacLeod. Thanks for answering my plea for help.

I am puzzled. The 1881 Census has at Schoolmaster's House Barra not only William Arbuckle, Schoolmaster aged 56 and unmarried but also Euphemia [i.e. Effy]McGeggan Domestic servant aged 24 and also unmarried.
On the assumption this is the folks your message refers to, Effy was born South Uist. The name transition was certainly from MacEachan [pronounced not as we would now as Mcgeekun but nearer to McGayakun and probably mistranscribed by an English speaking Census clerk]. South Uist had no McGeggans, plenty of McEachan/McEachens and just a few who had made it halfway to McGeechan].
Interesting?

Hi Angus & Lorraine
I know this message is quite old & you've likely figured this out over the course of the last 12 years. The 1881 census mis-spells Euphemia's surname. She was: Euphemia "Effy" MacKiggan Birth abt 1848 in Grimnish, Benbecula, Inverness-shire, Scotland
daughter of
Donald MacKiggan Birth abt 1815 in North Uist, Inverness-shire, Scotland
&
Flora MacRury Birth 1818 in Griminish, Benbecula, Inverness-shire, Scotland Death 19 Nov 1882 in 24 Griminish, Benbecula, Inverness-shire, Scotland
Cheers, Jan

The first posting on this thread states that there is a "death registration for William Arbuckle for 1879." This is in fact wrong as the certificate dates from 10 years later. "Williams parents were John Arbuckle & Margaret ??????." I think the missing name surname is "Stiven" from what I can make out on the document. A child name Alexanderina Thomson Arbuckle was born on 17 Feb 1827 and christened on 18 Mar 1827 in Falkirk, Stirlingshire. Parents were John Arbuckle and Margaret Stiven. Unfortunately I have not found any trace of other children from this marriage. Although it is It is an attractive idea, I haven't seen anything to connect that John to John William Arbuckle, son of Rev. William Arbuckle of North Uist who seems to have been in Prince Edward Island by 1833.
