Hi folks
Am descended from two unrelated MacLellan families from
Torlum, Benbecula and Loch Carnan, S. Uist, Invernesshire.
Some related families: MacMillan, Johnston, Wilson, Black, MacCormick. Emigrated to Ontario and PEI at time of Clearances, 1848-1851. Would gladly share information with anyone searching ancestors from these islands, no matter what the surname!

Hi Malcolm,
Believe John Ban and family were pioneer emigrants to Big Marsh, Antigonish County, NS., from Eigg. Can pass on a fair bit of info, but altogether too much to post here, so will email you.

Surnames: McMillan, Russell, Stewart
I am looking for anything on Grace Stewart McMillan who was born about 1852. Her family originated from South Uist but moved to Argyll where Grace was married, on 1 April 1875, to John Russell. Place of marriage was Clachan, Kilcalmonell and they settled in Glenmanuilt, near Southend. On John and Grace's marriage certificate her mother is shown as Grace Stewart, Dressmaker, but I have no details of her father.

Grace McMillan and John Russell had five children, Grace Russell (born 21/12/1877), who married my Great Grandfather Kenneth McKenzie, Katie Russell, John Russell, Polly Russell and Alexander Stewart (Sandy) Russell who purchased the Island of Sanda in the 1920s.

Any information on Grace Stewart McMillan or any of her descendants/ancestors gratefully received.

Surnames: MacMillan, MacInnes
My ancestor Neil MACINNES from Aird, Benbecula married Catherine MACMILLAN from Balivanich, Benbecula at St. Michael's Catholic Church Ardkenneth, S. Uist in 1839. Neil and children Mary and Donald survived the clearances and ended up in the 1851 census of Nichol Twp. Ontario, later in nearby Elora Village, outside of Guelph. Seeking more information on this family as well as contact with anyone who may be related or just from the same villages.

Regarding the Register of Emigrants, I have not seen it and did not know that Neil's wife Catherine left on the voyage with him. When and where she died is another mystery. Does the register also name the ship they came over on and the year? Daughter Mary married Alexander McRae c. 1860 probably in Nichol Twp. Ontario. Whether daughter Catherine died or married in Ontario I don't know. I would like to get in touch with the other researcher looking for MacMillans. Angus, thank you for your reply. Can you find a death record for Neil's mother Mary MacInnes? I don't know if she had already died by the time they migrated or if she was left behind.

I expect you already know but emigration of your Neil McInnes and Catherine MacMillan [+ Mary, catherine, Donald, Ann] is recorded in the Co Leis Thu publication Register of Emigrants from the western isles of scotland as number SUE516. They are recorded as destination unknown so you might want ot put Bill Lawson right.
I and a Canadian MacMillan are in contact about Benbecula MacMillans but our ancestors are from Torlum rather than two miles up the road in Balivanich. however, there is an Australian who has eebn chasing up her Balivanich MacMillan ancestors. I will put you in touch if you like.
Incidentally, I have full print outs of all MacMillan b, m and d for Benbecula and S Uist from 1857-98 if you have any checking you would like me to do

Mary MacInnes, age 75, is in the household of Neil and Catherine MacInnes in the 1841 census for Aird. I have no clue as to her maiden name or her husband's name. If Neil was born around 1801, I would assume she would be born around 1785-90. The other Mary MacInne, age 20, living in the household was probably Neil's sister. I have no further info. on her.
