Surnames: Campbell, Mackay

The earliest records I have, regarding the family of Campbells I am seeking, is the baptisms of
some, if not all, of RICHARD CAMPBELL [also known as DENOON or DENUNE ] and
ELIZABETH MACKAY’S children. All the baptisms took place at DURNESS, Sutherland.

WILLIAM CAMPBELL, 14 July 1765 [ married Crabb, 4 issue]

ISABELLA CAMPBELL, 16 November 1768 [married McKay 2/3 issue]

DONALD CAMPBELL, 18 February 1772

JOHN CAMPBELL, 11 September 1774 [7 issue]

HUGH CAMPBELL, 14 May 1777 [married Margaret WILKINSON, 12 issue]

At least 4 of Hugh and Margaret’s children came out to New Zealand.

PATRICK CAMPBELL, 21 December 1779
Patrick did not marry, his Estate was valued at 60,000 POUNDS when he died in 1860, 10
thousand pounds of his estate was invested and the interest accruing was put towards a school in
the Parish of Durness and also to help the “poor’ in the Durness Parish going by the name of
Campbell and MacKay, I understand this bequest is still operational

BARBARA CAMPBELL, 8 April 1783 [ married Roderick BEATON, no issue]

Remember the name DENOON / DENUNE, was used.

Believe most of the Campbell males served in the British Army, some at the Waterloo dust up.

Not sure when or how many of the family moved south from the DURNESS / BALNAKEIL
areas to Newcastle, but possibly around 1800.

If you believe you might be part of this family I would love to hear from you.

Regards Don Wilson
