The 1881 census shows Edward Cain, age 22, born Kilwinning and wife Jessie Cain, 22, born Bathgate, living in Slamannan. This Jessie Cain cannot be either of the ones born in Seaham, as she is about six years older and born in a different country.

If the submitted information from the IGI is accurate, this Jessie is probably the daughter of William Shaw and Helen Porter, born in Bathgate on 13 January 1859.

If you think this might be your family, you need to go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and download the image of the marriage certificate, which will tell you the full names of both sets of parents.

Why do you think that your Jessie/Jessey was born in Seaham in 1865/6?

There used to be a old falkirk royal infirmary at Thornhill road it maybe where your photo was taken,as it looks like the building, In the 1970's it was known as a hostel for homless older people. It was knocked down in the 80's and new flats are now on the ground of the old building.

Hi Christine.
Sorry for not getting back sooner.
The connection I was looking for was to do with John Rigg.
John Rigg,s mother was called Catherine Campbell Leckie and she came from Paisley, Scotland. I know she married John Rigg in Australia where they had John Rigg Jnr - who went onto marry Pauline Anketell his 1st wife in New Zealand. They moved I know from Australia to New Zealand where they had more children. What I am searching for is Catherine Campbell Leckie's/Rigg death details. Also I have been trying to find out whether she went to Australia/New Zealand with her other sister Elizabeth Leckie. I am not sure if you would know this information as you are connected with the Anketell side of things.
I have been searching sites for passenger lists which would show when they went from Scotland to Australia first and then New Zealand - but have come up with nothing. I do know that John Rigg Snr was born in Kircudbright in Scotland
and knew Catherine Campbell Leckie for a good few years before they left for down under. I think they must have lleft Scotland about 1854-1855.WOuld appreciat eif you have any info on the above and if I can help you in any way with your enquries please let me know.
Catherine Campbell Leckie is my g.g.g.g.grandfather's
daughter.
Waiting to hear from you.
Kind regards.

I know this is now 8+years on from your post, but i'm hoping you are still actively searching for info, or signing on to Ancestry! Or perhaps someone else will have some info relevant to me!

I'm investigating a different Hugh Allison(my great X3 grandfather), he Married Rosanna McTaig/McTague/Montague in 1854 in Muiravonside and lived at Rumford. He appears to have come over from Ireland With his parents, James & Maggie Baxter Allison, and half a dozen other siblings, Joseph, James, John, William, Mary Jane & Bridget.

My Hugh had a son James born 28.12.57 at Rumford. Your Hugh - or at least another Hugh, married to an Agnes Caldwell Allison, had a son William, born 20.08.57 at Rumford Muiravonside. I am trying to see if there is some connection between the two - surely there must have been!

There are 2 other families having kids in Rumford at that same time who may have been related:-

John & Mary Baxter Allison, who's son Hugh was born 28.12.57 (yes, the same dob as above - its not a mistake!), at Rumford &
Robert and Mary or (I think)Margaret Rooney (various spellings with ie or just 1 o) who had 3 kids registered at Rumford during the 1860's!

Any help or info gratefully rec'd!!

Jane

I've hit a brick wall and need help with the McGlenn name. Stirlingshire is the only place in Scotland where I've found the name. Family history claims they were of Scottish descent. John McGlenn is found in Oswego, NY census in 1800 and son James Anson McGlenn is born in Oswego, NY in 1827. James married Phebe Beebe in Parma, Ohio in 1857.
They seemed to have the sea in their blood because James was a captain and a lighthouse keeper and his son worked on the Great Lakes Ships.
Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

The buildings of both farms have recently been sold by the Patrons of Cowane's Hospital, but the lands remain in their possession. The farms were rented from the Cowane Trust by various families over some generations.

James T. Wilson (House of Arubthnot Falkirk), wife Elizabeth Aitken, son James Wilson portrait painter

I am searching for a James T. Wilson, of the House of Arbuthnot who married an Elizabeth Aitken (Aikman on her death record). They had at least one child, a James Wilson born in 1808 who was a well known Portrait Painter in Glasgow. James Wilson, Portrait Painter married Jeannie McGregor in 1831. Jeannie died in 1862. I am searching for any information on James T. Wilson, Elizabeth Aitken, or their son James Wilson Portrait Painter that may be available.

James Wilson, Painter & Jeannie McGregor had four children:

Child #1. Jeanie Rose Wilson, born 1836, died 1872 in Glasgow, married Andrew Neilson in 1863. They had at least one child, Jeannie Rose McGregor Neilson b.1864, died 1951 in Toronto Canada. Jeanie Rose McGregor Neilson had six children, the eldest was Jeannie Hilda Katherine Williams b. 1893 in Llanstadwel Wales, d.1972 in Toronto Canada. The others were Alfred, Charlie, Ina, Alexander and George. I believe all six children emigrated to North America. Jeanie Rose Wilson is my GGGGrandmother.

Child #2. James Swan Wilson, born 1842 - other than a birth record I can find absolutely no information on this person

Child #3. Mary Buchanan Wilson, born 1845, married Buchanan Kirkwood

Child #4. Elizabeth Kate McKenzie Wilson, born 1850, her married name was Stuart

I am also searching for any information on Andrew Neilson, b.1840. After his wife died in 1872 it is believed that he remarried, possibly to a German woman by the name of Marion but I cannot find any information to support this. In addition to his daughter Jeanie Rose McGregor Neilson it is believed that they also had another child, and then more children once he remarried.

Any help anyone can offer would be much appreciated.

CORRECTION

Lindsay, I am not sure what the 'pre 1855 MI's for West Stirlingshire' are but they sound like some sort of listing of cemetery records. If it is not too much trouble, I would very much appreciate it if you could lookup a James T. Wilson of the House of Arbuthnot, married to Elizabeth Aitken (Aikman). I am not too sure what being from the House of Arbuthnot means but I believe it is located in Falkirk. They had at least one child, a James Wilson, born in 1808 who became a fairly well-known portrait painter in Glasgow during the 19th century. I am anxious for any information on his parents, James T. & Elizabeth Wilson.

Looking forward to your replay,

Sincerely, Jocelyn, Toronto, Canada

My earliest ancestor George Russell 1775-1854 was described in census reports as born in Edinburgh but all attempts to find his parentage have failed. His remains were buried in Falkirk in an undescribed cemetery. He was a very religious man and his son became the first mayor of Motherwell, Scotland. I joined the Russell DNA Project in hopes of finding another descendant but tests did at least confirm my y-dna is similar to other Russells of Scottish descent. I found your posting to Ancestry.com and hope that you might be of some kind assistance to me. Robert T. Russell, a/k/a R-67 on the Russell DNA Project y-results page.

Hello Jocelyn, very sorry, I looked through all the five Falkirk Churchyards in the East Stirlingshire MI's and found nothing for a James Wilson/Elizabeth Aitken or Aikman combination.

I thought I would try and work out (as I am sure you have done many times) what this 'House of Arbuthnot' was also. Didn't find anything definitive but I see that there was a place in Falkirk called Arbuthnot House, now a B&B.
Kempy is the name of a dwelling house built by my great grandfather James Clarke (married to Mary Coubrough) who was a lighthouse keeper on Loch Eriboll. On some very old maps Kempy can be found in its original spelling which was Kempie. I have no idea when the word was changed or why but today the house, which I now live in, is still known as Kempy the house with the red roof!
Found your question while researching my ancestery. Hope this helps.
Kind regards
Fiona
