Dunn Family History

Dear Barbara,

Decided to send this in case it links up someday with your family. If it does, please let me know.

I have WILLIAM DUN of Airth and JANET CHALMERS of Larbert (born in Alloa) proclaiming BANNS 22Jan1791 in Larbert Parish and I believe marrying in Airth Parish on 14Feb1791 with Janet listed as JANET CHAMBERS.

The children of William Dunn and Janet CHALMERS are:

JOHN Dunn born 13Nov1791 in Larbert

ROBERT Dunn born 11Sept1793 in Larbert

WILLIAM Dunn born 5Mar1797 in Larbert

MARY Dunn born 17Feb1799 in Larbert

From here my line flows from Robert Dunn who married Catherine Stevenson listed as both from Aurchintorly (an estate near Milton by Glasgow) 24May1822.

The children of Robert Dunn and Catherine Stevenson are:

WILLIAM Dunn born 16Nov1822 in Glasgow

AGNES Dunn born 15Feb1824 in Glasgow married John Dollar 9Jun1847 in Logie Parish. Agnes died 19Oct1862 in Stirling, Stirlingshire.

ALEXANDER Dunn born 11Apr1826 in Glasgow

JANET Dunn born 14Jun1828 in Glasgow (St. Enoch Parish) married WILLIAM McKINSIE of Dundee in the Free South Church, Stirling, Stirlingshire 6Nov1855.

CATHERINE born 19Jul1830 in Glasgow

ROBERT Dunn born 30Aug1832 in Glasgow

MARY Dunn born 6Dec1835 in Stirling, Stirlingshire

JANE Dunn born 1Apr1838 (found only on IGI, not on Scots Origins) in Stirling,Stirlingshire

MARION Dunn born 24Apr1842 in Stirling, Stirlingshire.

From here my line flows from Agnes who died at 38 years of age having only two children, both daughters so this is the end of the Dunn name in my line. I am still working on getting the names of spouses and children for Agnes' siblings. Some of their children will undoubtly carry the name William Dunn.

Hope this helps somehow.

James Russell and Mary Kirkwood had a daughter Margaret born in 1842. She married William Dunn at St. Ninians, Stirlingshire in 1864. They had three children, Andrew born 1864, James Russell born 1867 and Mary, born 1870. I suspect that both Mary and William Dunn must have died prior to 1881, since on the 1881 census, Mary Dunn is living with her grandmother Mary Russell at St. Ninians and the other two children are with Dunn relatives. James Russell Dunn is listed with his uncle James Dunn at Denny, Stirling and Andrew is listed with his uncle Andrew Dunn at Kilsyth, Stirling. James Russell and Mary (Kirkwood) Russell are my husband's great great grandparents. We would be interested to hear from any of the Dunn/Russell descendants.

William and Margaret Dunn were my great great grandparents.
Margaret died of a fever in 1873 and William died soon after in 1874 killed by a passenger train. Their son Andrew was my great grandfather. He married Isabella Stevenson and had my grandad Andrew who then moved down to East Anglia England and had my dad Andrew.

Hello Barb,

You may be interested in the following Monumental Inscription taken from a stone in Denny Cemetery:

"Erected by James R. Dunn in memory of his beloved wife
MARGARET HENDRY died 24th June 1927 aged 55 years
The above JAMES RUSSELL DUNN died 24th January 1929 aged 62 years
Also their youngest son ANDREW DUNN died 24th April 1957 aged 49 years
Also their elder son WILLIAM DUNN died 26th September 1950 aged 55 years
Also his wife ISABELLA HUNTER died 1st July 1985 aged 82 years"

I would imagine it's the same James Russell DUNN as if you work back his age from his date of death, it's 1867 and there can't have been that many James DUNN Russells wandering about Denny!

I have 2 photos of the stone so if you'd like copies, let me know and I'll forward copies to the e-mail address shown on your profile.

Hello: I noticed you are working on Dunn family history. Do you have any connections to
William Dun & Helen Cruickshanks married 1804
or Helen Dun born 1808. All took place in Stirling.

Hello Anne,
I was very interested in your message about James Russell Dunn. He would have been my great grandad Andrew's brother.
Do you have any other information on any other Dunns. I have got as far back as James Russell Dunns great grandfather and am now rather stuck.
Would be very grateful for any information you may have.

Hi Tracey,

The only info I have is MI's from gravestones in and around the Denny area.

I could certainly have a wee look to see if I've got anything regarding Dunn families, but I wouldn't know whether there were any family connections between them.

Usually, the older the gravestones, the less information there is on them and more often than not, stones dating from the early 1800's only have initials.

Is there anyone specfic you're looking for? If it's not in the Denny area, I have the pre-1855 MI books for Stirlingshire so if you could narrow down areas and get back to me, I'll see what I can find.

Hi Anne,

Thank you for replying to my message. I have traced back my Dunn relatives to my great great great grandad Andrew Dunn who married Margaret Dunn (her maiden name was Dunn as well). They married in 1832. They lived at Greensburn farm, Denny. Andrew died in 1864. Margaret died in 1863. According to his death entry, Andrew's father was called James and his mother something Donaldson. James is who I am trying to trace but have been having trouble finding him on the Scotlands people website.
Andrew was born around 1800 or thereabouts.

Margaret's parents were called David Dun and Isobel Benny.
They married in 1808 in Kilsyth.

I have a copy of the 'other stirlingshire parish burials pre 1855' but unfortunately there are about 7 pages missing at the beginning of the Denny records so I can't see any Dunn records which might be there.

If you have any information on any of the above I would be very grateful.

Tracey
