Helen LOCKIE died age 73 yrs.,1873, in Stow. Parents noted ( the informant, her son, )as Thomas LOCKIE a Teacher & Janet Clark.
Helen may have been born Selkirk, she shows as such in a census, also said to be born Stow.
I understand Selkirk to be in Stow Parish in the early 1800's.
I have no marriage for Thomas Lockie & Janet Clark.
Does anyone have them in their Tree ?
This seems to be the only way that I may track them down.
No Baptism for Helen, & no sight of any Siblings.
Helen married David DOD(D)S 1824, in Traquair , Peebleshire, where he was an Ag. Lab..
In 1841 they showed in Stow.
1851 Helen shows as "deserted by her husband & supported by the Parish Board".
Mary

My great grandmother was Elizabeth (Betty) Wilson born 1871 Ladhope, Galshiels, her father was James Wilson and his father James Wilson. Elizabeth had a number of siblings also in Galashiels but would be interesting to find more info...
Get in touch if you think there is any link
thanks

I am trying to research my Great-Uncle's military service in the Great War. He was born in about 1899, brother of William Sanderson Hogg (My Grandfather) and son of George and Margaret Hogg. I met him as a child in 1977 in Galashiels. He emigrated to Australia where he died. When I met him he told me about his service in the Great War where he had been wounded at age 16. But I did not unfortunately inquire as to his regimental details.

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

This marriage was 1890 not 1899. Archibald Romanis is my grandfather by his first marriage to Joan Clinton. His sons were William, he wnt to Canada, and James my grandfather who went to Hawick. The children of the second marriage to Jane Henderson were John, maybe Jock, Peter Thomas,Mary,Alexandra, Isabella,Euphemia, Jane,Agnes,Archibald,William Frederick. I believe that most if not all that lived went to Aus, including mother but not Archibald. He had a sawmill in Galashiels and thrashing mill and died in Humbie. The rest is correct. I have more if it of interest. Jeff Romanis Worcester.

Re: Robert ELLIOT, wife Euphemia TUDHOPE, from Selkirk, and the Thomson family -- Robert, Andrew & Euphemia d. Scotland 1700s

 Alan,
Thank you for your reply. I believe the Euphemia Tudhope you mentioned would be a niece or great niece probably to the one I seek. My Euphemia was born around 1720, and I'm not sure when she died or if she died in Scotland. Her death would be no earlier than 1765 if she died in Scotland as that is when her last child was born.
The Thomson names I mention were all born between 1751 and 1760 and I believe died as infants or young children as the family did name other children by the same names, except for the child Euphemia who was born in 1760 or 1762.This Thomson family immigrated to America sometime between 1765 and 1794. Our first record of them in America is in 1794 in Georgetown, Wa. D.C. area.It is of interst to determine where they are all buried and if I could locate Robert and his wife Euphemia then I'd know if they immigrated with the other Thomsons or not. Robert was also born around 1720, they married in 1750. Thanks again for any help.
Rebecca

He went to the navy and when I was in Aden (National Service) I met him on board the aircraft carrier HMS Bulwark in 1961 and then I believe he was in the Fire Service in London after that.I am sure there was a Gala connection and possibly they also lived there for a while. I have school photos with him. I think they lived in Currer street Selkirk.
alan

Hi

I am busy tracing my mother's ancestry. Her maiden name was Scott, and her family originated, as far as I can tell, in Galashiels. I see there is a certain Jessie Young Scott, born 1860 in Whitebank, in her tree. Jessie's siblings were Helen Scott, Henry Bennet Scott, Thomas Scott (my great-grandfather), and Maggie Bennet Scott. I think they were all born in Galashiels, and their parents were Thomas Scott and Margaret Bennet. Possibly the same Jessie?

Regards

Spencer Rowley
spencer@mnsystems.co.za

Kathy,
I was very interested in your message as I am researching my Dalgliesh ancestors who are reputed to be from the Galashiels area. I believe that my gg grandparents, James and Isabel Dalgliesh emigrated to Ontario, Canada in the late 1830's. Interestingly, my grandmother told us that her g grandfather had been a head forester on a Duke's estate but she did not know any details. I believe that my gg grandfather James was born in about 1812 and Isabel around 1816. I also believe that James may have had a brother who came out at the same time, but I do not have any details.

I remember the Dalglish as well as it was quite common in all variations. My family were there too in 1816. ANd prior. James Murray married Elizabeth Hall at that time and son John was born when Elizabeth died in chilbirth, he remarried. The rest of mine are Lees, Moffatt
etc however I definitely have info on the Gournlocks/Governlocks and will look it up.

I am descended from David Dalgleish who was described as gamekeeper on the marriage certificate of his son, William to Elizabeth Smart in London. Your dates are similar. There are supposed links with the Huntly Gordon family. Does this sound familiar? My maiden name was Dalgleish.

Robert ELLIOT, wife Euphemia TUDHOPE, from Selkirk, and the Thomson family -- Robert, Andrew & Euphemia d. Scotland 1700s

I'm looking for any lookups in the above families in cemetery inscriptions. The Elliot family would be Robert Elliot, and his wife Euphemia Tudhope Elliot. The Elliot's were from Selkirk. For the Thomson family they were in the Selkirk parish area until some came to America. Several children died in Scotland in the 1700's, namely Robert, Andrew, and perhaps Euphemia.I have never been sure of who all in the Thomson family immigrated, not the Elliot's, or whether they even did immigrate.Any information on the Thomson/Elliot familes would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.
Rebecca

Dear Margaret
Thankyou for the reply. Its often hard to get information anout overseas ancestors when you in Australia, although the internet is wonderful now.
I am sure the Bryden family you mention is mine. All I have on Walter Bryden is that he married Margaret Greive in 1756 at Ettrick, Sellkirk and that he was a farmer. His daughter Christian is my direct branch, (which links in with Walters mothers name as you mentioned). I will look into this further. Thanks again.
Dee Nairn

I have a partial Burton family tree for the Burtons of Roberton parish, Roxburghshire, Scotland which was compiled by my aunt in Ontario in the 1970s. According to her research, Gilbert Burton, born at Roberton, 1810, died June 14, 1868. He married Isabella Bone (could be the same as Boa?)
1814-Jun. 28, 1858 and they had 9 children. Gilbert was the son of William Burton (1782-1861) and Elizabeth Oliver (1781-1861). He was the grandson of Henry Burton and Helen Henderson. Several of Gilbert's brothers: Robert, Henry and James moved to Ontario, Can. in the 1820s or 30s and had farms in York and Peel Co. I am a descendant of Robert Burton. I am interested in more information on the Scottish branches of the family and can provide info. on the Ontario branches.

I am updating Ashkirk cemetery at the moment. There is one old one so far for a George Shiells who died 1774 aged 75 and his wife Janet MOOR ? could be Muir etc. The headstone is awful and very difficult to decipher but it looks like Moor but a marriage check might verify her maiden name.It does not give any place names like Dimpleknowe! There is also a Isabella Shiel wife of Andrew Shortreed as well. There may be more as we have only done about over half and its hard going.

I should have been more specific, myself!
What I meant was, the dates of the individuals, as far as known, and what other countries apart from Scotland, might be involved, if the family emigrated?

This query is not very informative.
What date period(s), and what country/countries are involved?

Re: Henry SWORD lived Rockingham Co. VA, dau. Sarah 'Sallie' m. Francis BROWNING, ch. raised as SWORD in Pike Co. KY

The surname SWORD derives from the name SIWARD, and is found in Scotland from the 11th century.
Unfortunately, it also occurs in England (usually as Swerde or Seward), from at least the 14th century.
However, as a Humphrey SWORD, a jacobite, was transported to Virginia in 1716, I would be inclined to favour Scotland as the origin of your family.
Gordon Johnson

Selkirk in the 1500s

The Selkirk Court Book, 1503-1541 was transcribed and published in two parts by the Scottish Record Society, 1960 (covering 1503-1531) and 1969 (covering 1531-1541), but without any index.
With the approval of the Scottish Record Society, I have compiled genealogical indexes to the two parts, with the first index available on my website for some time. Work on the second index was completed at the end of 2008 and the finalised work has now been put up on my website. So there are two indexes to consult, free of charge. If you do not have access to the publications indexed, I can provide page copies as required, for a small fee per page, with a minimum charge of 5 pounds to cover copying, post and packing. Scans can be provided as an alternative. The minimum 5 pound charge still applies, but more copies can be scanned instead.
These, and other new indexes to Scottish books, are listed at:

Happy hunting!
Gordon Johnson.
