John Brydone, wife Christina MacKenzie Robertson; his uncle James Liddle
I found a beautiful family Bible in an antique shop in Fremantle, Western Australia, while on vacation and was allowed to photograph the family entries, etc., and will share them with anyone interested, as well as where the Bible is located, etc.
Bible was a gift to John Brydone in December 1861, from his uncle, James Liddle.
John married Christina MacKenzie Robertson in Edinburgh on December 12, 1861, so the Bible must have been a wedding gift.
Children born to John and Christina were recorded in the Bible, along with specific addresses where they lived, baptisms, places, ministers officiating, full names, etc. People recorded are:
John Brydone, b. 2 Aug 1839, Dublin St. Edinburgh
Christina MacKenzie Robertson b. 30 June 1836, Sylvan Way, Edinburgh
Married 12 Dec. 1861 at 84 Dawriston Pl, Edinburgh
Children of John and Christina:
Joseph Gordon MacKenzie Brydone b.23 Sept. 1862 at 100 Laursiton Pl, Edinburgh.
Elizabeth Liddle Brydone b 3 Sept. 1865 at 11 Portland Place, Edinburgh.
John Brydone b. 9 Dec. 1868, 37 Oakley rd, Islington, London, England
James Edward Nixon Brydone, b. 25 January 1871, in The Priory, Stoke Rior, w. Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, England. A note says the the name "Nixon" was accidentally omitted when James was baptised, so his registered name didn't include Nixon.
Christina MacKenzie Robertson Brydone, b. 23 January, 1873, in Heath House, near Bromsgrove, Worcestershire. Her baptism is not recorded.
Please contact me if you would like to have photocopies of this Bible and its entries, as well as its location and price in Australia.

I'm trying to locate my Ballantine's in Scotland; and while a long shot, one never knows.
I've got a John and Mary (McShannon/Shannon) Ballantine; he was born around 1761 and Mary in 1770. I know they left Scotland for N Ireland in the late 1700s, but nothing before that.
Thanks for any assistance -
Cheers,
Terry

Hi Maxine,
Thank you for your e/mail. I have a copy of the old tree, infact Greg Reive came once to visit when he was in Scotland. I also am decended from son Andrew 1797. His grave is at Kirkpatrick Juxa, It has on the stone 'He who lived a humble & virteous life avoiding sin & wicked strife '. I have followed up most of his brothers & sisters, but as I said can't find any trace of birth or death of their father Andrew 1750 or who his parents were. Please let me know if you find any more information on Andrew Reive 1750. I have not been in touch with decendants of Thomas, although I did get some details about them from someone some time ago. Sister Isabella 1807 also emigrated to Canada and married John Patterson.
I don't come across many people searching for my branch of Reives.
Catherine

Hi there
Just been looking at my info and will see if this can fit in this message for you.
I	ANDREW REIVE – 1750 - 1812

Andrew married Isabella Blake at Midraeburn, Dumfries Scotland on 27 May 1791 by Rev. McGrier, associate Minister in Ettrick Forest, county of Selkirk, Scotland. Andrew was a farmer in Harewoodhead Farm, Eskdale Dumfries. (Some indexes show the name to be Black).

He was probably a descendant (son) of Andrew Reive who was in possession of a large sheepholding in Glendinning, Westerkirk, Dumfries. Andrew Reive (Westerkirk) was probably a subscriber to a book of sermons which was published in 1741.

Andrew and Isabella had nine children over a period of 17 years

1 Betty 20 April 1792
2 William	4 December 1793 (ancestor of George Reive- Canada)
3 Bridget	31 July 1795
4 Andrew	13 May 1797 (ancestor of Greg Reive) this is my research here in Australia.
5 George	21 April 1799
6 Jean 28 August 1801
7 Thomas 17 July 1804 (emigrated to Canada)
8 Isabella	15 July 1807
9 Margaret	July 1809

Andrew died 20 May 1812 and his wife Isabella had died 11 days before on 9 May, apparently when they were living in Eskdale.

It is not known where they are buried.

I think this information came from a descendant of George, who did this early research in the late 1800s. That 2nd para has been handed down through the families and is purported to come from research done by the descendant of one of the children of Andrew and Isabella. The line I researched is Andrew, 4th child and I made contact with descendants of Thomas who went to Canada.
Maxine

Hi,
I too am trying to find out about Andrew Reive 1750 & Isabella Blake, but hitting a brick wall. I looked up 2 of their sons deaths on Scotlands People and it gives mother as Isabella Black. There is an earlier Andrew married an Isabella Black in 1728 at Eskdalemuir but that is too early for our Andrew, as his family were born 1792-1809. I have searched the graveyards around the Morton/Thornhill Dumfriesshire area as they seemed to have been living there about 1807 where daughter Isabella was born, but found nothing. Most of their children were born around Eskdalemuir. Do hope someone can solve this mystery.
Catherine

Thank you for the above reply, but there are several things wrong in your posting. John and Isabella had 6 children that reached maturity. I know about John and Isobella, It's John's Parents I am searching for.
John Rose, was born around 1833. (I am unable to find him in the 1841 and 1851 census) In his census entries (1861-1911) he lists himself as being born in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, with the exception of 1881, when he lists his place of birth as Renfrew, Renfrewshire.
(The OPRs show a birth in Renfrew at this time for a John Rose, but this John Rose married Jessie Tosh in 1860 in Arbroath his occupation being listed as Railway Clerk, and is clearly not as his parents are: Alexander Rose and Marjory Pitfield.)
The paper trail back to John is watertight and the information below is well researched, but his place and date of birth remains a mystery. His parents are John Rose and Helen Grieve, as confirmed by his marriage and his death certificates, but to date, I have not found a birth for this John, or a marriage, birth or death for his parents, until I do, his parents remain the earliest known ancestors in my Rose line.
The earliest paper evidence I can find for John lists him, "of Glen Parish of Traquair", near Innerleithen. He married Isabella Stevens on 25th September 1857 at Peebles. His marriage certificate describes him as, "John Rose aged 23 years, of Glen Parish of Traquair, Plasterer, Batchelor, Parents: John Rose (Joiner), Helen Grieve, (deceased)"

In 1861 (April), I find him living at 73 Nicholson Street, Edinburgh, as a lodger and plasterer, (born abt. 1833 Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire), having left Isabella and young John in Innerleithen, while he tries to establish a foothold for his family in Edinburgh. He wasn't alone for long, their second child, Beatrice was born on 22 October 1861, at St. Cuthbert, Edinburgh, thus suggesting that he moved Isabella and young John to Edinburgh, before that date, and that they were together (conception) around January 1861. It is likely that Beatrice was conceived in Innerleithen. This means John (likely) moved to Edinburgh after January 1861, and that Isabella joined him there after 8th April 1861 (census date) and before 22nd October 1861 (birth of Beatrice). John, registered the death of Isabella's father on 27th February 1861, at Innerleithen, who had been suffering from cancer for about four months, I'm inclined to think that it was after this date that John moved to Edinburgh.

In 1871, living at 2 Eglington Street, Edinburgh, (born abt. 1833, Aberdeen), with spouse Isabella, (born Roxburgh) and with their 5 children. He is described as a Grocer. An occupation change, but Spouse and children, confirm that this is the same family.

In 1881, he has moved into 6 Eglington Street in addition to number 2, as his family grows. The same 5 children ages 9 to 22 are still living at home with their parents. He is described as a grocer. Strangely he is listed as being born in Renfrew, Renfrewshire. I am convinced that this is an error. All his other census enties list him as born in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, the details for his spouse, and all of his children are consistent with previous and future entries and known details, therefore I'm convinced of this mistake. (Confusingly, there is another John Rose [born Renfrew] and his spouse Isabella [born Abercorn, Linlithgow] living in Edinburgh, around this time, but their children and Isabella's birth place are not consistant with this family)

In 1891, he is back at Rose Cottage, Princes Street, Innerleithen, (born abt. 1833, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire) with Isabella S, and son William. He is described as a plasterer. Again this is a big change in circumstances, but all the details are consistant with this family. This is the same property we find Isabella and John junior living at, in 1861.

In 1901, at the age of 68, (born abt. 1833, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire) he and Isabella had returned north to 22 Buchanan Street, Leith [a blonde sandstone tenement building adjacent to Leith Walk. In 2010, google street maps show this property as being demolished and redeveloped]. He was living out his days as a gardener. Isabella died on 5th June 1904, reported by John who describes himself as a plasterer (retired). She died at 57 Albert Street, Edinburgh, (within 300m of her home)

In 1911, at the age of 79, (born Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire) he is living with his daughter Beatrice at 16 Barnton Terrace in Edinburgh, descibed as Widower, retired Plasterer.

In 1918, on 8th January, he died aged 85 years, at 16 Barnton Terrace, Edinburgh. His death certificate, describes him as John Rose, 78 years old, (he was 85 years old) Builder (Retired), widower of Isabella Stevens. Father: John Rose, Mechanical Engineer (deceased). Mother: Helen Grieve (deceased). His death was registered by his daughter, Beatrice Rose. (Malcolm).

Children of ISOBELLA STEVENS and JOHN ROSE are:
i. My paternal great grand mother is Jane Rose who married Henry Thomas, their 1st child was born in 1879 in Clarendon Jamaica.

Thanks
Bev
