Hi Stuart!

This is a really old post, but you had replied to my original: "I read your posting and hope you can find a few names for me--my great-great grandparents were John and Anna (Leonard) Brass. John was born in 1847 (I do not have the exact date)in Orkney and emigrated to Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1872. His parents were Magnus and Christenia (Hutchings) Brass (I do not have their dates of birth either).
Anna was born Aug. 22, 1847; her parents were James and Celia (Inkster) Leonard. John and Anna were married on June 5, 1868 in Edinburgh."

I don't see that I received the info; would you be willing to resend? Thanks so much for your help!

Probably the best single source is ROUSAY ROOTS which was first produced as a book but is now online. It was initially written by David Marwick who died recently.

There is also a copy of the 1881 census of Egilsay online which you can get via google

Hi Hazel,

You confused me for a moment because I didn't know the Rev H Smith had a son named James Bey Smith, I knew only that he had a brother of that name!

I don't have much on the Smith side of your family, I'm afraid, just back as far as John Smith b.1797 at Tarland and his wife Margaret Bey b.1803, parents of Harry Smith b.1830, who would be your g-grandfather. And all of that info I got from the ancestry tree of June Riddell, who wrote some of the earlier messages in this thread. So if you click on her username you should be able to access her tree from her profile page.

You and I are both connected through Elizabeth Stewart. Her younger sister Margaret was my gg-grandmother. Harry Smith was a witness at Margaret Stewart's wedding at Allalogie, Logie Coldstone in 1869.

Elizabeth and Margaret's parents were James Stewart b.1797 Mortlach, Banff and Elizabeth Blair b.1803 Crathie, Abdnshire.

James Stewart and his brother George were declared fugitives on 19 September 1816 and 'put to the horn'. Presumably that's why James moved south to Aberdeenshire!

James Stewart's parents were Robert Stuart alias Macalay b.1754 Mortlach, Banff and Margaret Ritchie b.1752 Mortlach. Quite a few folk in the Banffshire area were in the habit of having an alias added to their surname, and one theory is that the alias gives an indication of the geography or affiliation of a clan surname. The MacAlays were a sept of the Stewarts of Appin.

If you need more info on this side of your family, just message me and I'll send you an invite to my tree.

Kind regards

June

Steve,
Not sure if you ever found any info but I am related to Peter & Mary. They are my Great, Great, Great Grandparents. My Grandmother's father was a McDonald from Canada and moved to Buffalo, NY. His name was John McDonald and he died when my grandmother was a teenager.

My great grandfather John Edward Peter McDonald was born in Mt. Forest, Ontario. His Father was Robert McDonald and mother was Mary Alice Kirkness McDonald. I believe both were born in Toronto. Mary Alice (born in 1855) was the oldest daughter of Peter Kirkness & Mary Scott.

Info I received from my grandmother indicating the Kirkness' had a plaid belonging to a clan in Scotland and had joined up with the McLeod clan at some point.

Peter, I'm told, was a fur trader in Canada and went back to Scotland to marry Mary Scot. They came from Edinburgh, Scotland to Toronto and were given a land grant of 150 acres in Mt. Forest from England. They lived in a log cabin on the land and this is where 11 children were born (1 set of twins).

Any further information you have on the family would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Cindi Marie Parker Gustafson

Hi
James Manson came from Orkney, He met Annie Scott who was from Hamilton and settled in Govan, their first child was born, but died. They then moved to Port Glasgow where the rest of the children were born. My grandmother, Annie was the oldest and she married John O'Neil. They had 4 chidren then Annie died in 1928. Her sister Mary died in 1929 from child bed fever however the child survived and was brought up by James and Annie (grandparents). Then my mums dad died in 1930 and their children were sent to a home. Annie's siblings are: Jessie married Thomas James. Douglas married John Deatcher. James not sure if he married but he could be the one known as Murray. Mary who died after child birth. Helen married John Ross then John Tait. George who I think married Mary Docherty and Margaret who married John Nixon and William Porter. The child born to Mary was known as Nan Cooper and I think she emigrated to America. Hope this helps Rosina

Hi scot, Helen was my great grandmother. She moved to a town in port Glasgow where our family still live. Although my mum and dad moved to aberdeen where I live. Bardrainey is an area in port Glasgow which is why you can't find it on a map. One of Helen's sons and two of her granddaughters and their families lives in Shetland and he is the one who told me about your grandfather. Unfortunately he didn't know who the American guy was....or he couldn't remember haha. Helen was married twice. The first husband was my great grandfather John Sutherland Ross and she had 3 children Nan (my nana) George and Jacqueline. (Jacqueline left her family and moved away....no one knew where she only got back in tough a few years before she died. When Helen remarried she had 3 more children Georgina (Georgie), Tam and Jim. Tam is the one who told me about your grandfather. Do you live in the states? Alison

Yes, my husband's grandfather was David Flett Smith and we are so excited to have you make contact with us. I have done extensive research on the Smith family and we have been in touch with the Smith daughters in Ontario, grandchildren of John Fraser Smith. I would be so thrilled to share the information that I have gathered and to have you share your knowledge of the family with us. My direct email is debismith26@gmail.com and I can send you an invite to our Smith family tree on ancestry if you would like to have access if you can send me your direct email. Kim (my husband) and I are on our way back to British Columbia from Arizona, where we spend our winters. I will look forward to hearing from you and sharing our family stories and photos.

Debi and Kim Smith
debismith26@gmail.com
British Columbia

I am the only grandchild of James and Helen. I think I have found the descendants of Uncle Dave who was a missionary in India. This is very exciting. As a little girl I had silver Indian bracelets he had put on my arm. I was raised in Orkney but now live in Tennessee

Hi Glen,

See how I go this time.

Like you I do not subscribe to Ancestry however I am using their platform to set up my Family Tree. This means that it now has some semblance of order to it. Also I can give links to my family and those far flung relations to view it.
Also members of Ancestry are able to access the information. I do get limited information on these people.Until I see it differently it is a win win situation for me

Up to this present time I have been very fortunate to be inundated with FREE ancestry information from generous relatives.

Ker Sinclair and Kenny Learmonth are contactable through the Orkney Family History Society.

If you require any more information on the Leith/ Cromarty Family and I can assist please do not hesitate to contact me.

I thought that I copied and pasted your email address if it works this time surely I didn't.

Liz

I definitely copied and pasted it this time.
This is the message that came up

Error
The address cockerline @ gmail.com. in the "To" field was not recognized. Please make sure that all addresses are properly formed.

I tried again putting extra spaces on either side of @ but still to no avail
As for the email address, I deliberately but spaces before and after the @ in cockerline @ gmail.com.

I am not currently subscribed to Ancestry, so the link from my contact info will not work. And my memory tells me Ancestry does not appreciate email links in these messages. So delete the spaces, and the link should work.

Hi Glen ,
A new day has dawned and my mind has cleared slightly.

I have found your connection to the Leith Cromarty line.
John Leith b 1803 parents Nicol leith and Margaret Cromarty.John married Kaithren Dunnet. Their son William Miller Leith b 1847 married Elizabeth Green Duncan b 1841. They moved to Ontario Canada.
All gleaned from Roger Cockerline.
I presume that you are related

I was certainly disappointed that I could not download my information onto your email address.
I now live in Forster NSW Australia but was born in St Margaret's Hope South Ronaldsay.
My mother did have contact with some one in Canada before she died 2008. I as yet have not found any clues to whom that was.
Cheers
Liz
Hello Joyce. The message was placed by a friend of mine who has access to Ancestry - I do not. Hence the fact that you did not recognise me, I am Stanley from Essex who you corresponded with some time ago. Unfortunately I have lost your e-mail address. I am hoping that you still have mine as I would like to correspond with you outside of the Message Board. There are one or two points I would like to discuss before I make my 5th holiday in Orkney in April. If you haven't got it , then can you let me have some form of contact details for you. Or let me know who you are married to or who your Father is. I might be able to find you that way.
Stanley

Hi, We have researched the family tree back to William, he is the cousin, not brother, of Robert and Francis Sutherland. We thought at first they were brothers as they seemed to travel to Gravesend, Kent, together. They are all buried in the cemetery at Gravesend with other members of the Tonge family, there are two a memorial stones. They were one of the four founding fishing families of Gravesend. Would be willing to exchange any details with you.

He apparently was small while william and John were tall men. I think my husband looks like Tom in his family photo.

Hi Murray, people have been looking for you. I have been in touch with Suvla's relatives in Australia and New Zealand- the Danby's, And also the Jacksons in England. Suvla was my grandad Peter Shearer' s cousin and Barbara was his sister. I think I have that right. I had the information from my Uncle Tom Shearer that you were in Australia somewhere. I am in New Zealand . Gail Danby confirmed your existence, but had lost touch. My tree is public, please contact me, so I can add your details,Thanks

My maternal great grandmother was Barbara Stevenson who lived at the Bu (birth 1829) She married George Rendall and emigrated to Australia in early 1850's before settling in Dunedin in 1860's.

My aunt has a fairly full family tree. It is difficult (lots of similar names) but a nephew or two came over to Central Otago later.
