My father late in life revealed that he had been born illegitimate, his father having died in the Battle of Jutland (I think) before his parents could marry. His father's surname was Chisholm (and, presumably, his mother's was Mackenzie). My maternal grandmother, however, had a different story. The local doctor got his cleaner/servant pregnant, and paid money to keep the liaison quiet. The child, my father, was raised by his maternal grandmother. He would have been born Stuart Chisholm Mackenzie on 23 November 1922, or thereabouts.
