We were in Edinburgh in September and stayed at the Apex on Grassmarket. While there I walked to Lauriston Street where my great great grandparents lived but was somewhat confused by the numbering and the church. First of all, is it correct that Lauriston Street is the short one, and that Lauriston Place is the longer one that goes by Heriot School? They (Robert Phemister and family) lived there at least from the 1841 census, he died there in 1873 and she in 1880. They lived at number 20 some of the years and at number 14 when she died. Perhaps someone local can explain.. Whether they moved, or the numbers changed, etc. Or how the numbering works now compared to then.
