Found a small mystery that I was wondering if someone might have some info on. While searching through old books at a flea market this weekend I found an original copy of "Friends till Death" by Hesba Stretton (Sarah Smith) and inside on the front page is hand written this inscription:
Mary E. Nutting
From
Mifs Eliza Macfie of
Dreghorn Castle
Scotland
Liverpool, Eng.
May 9, 1876
The only reference to an Eliza Macfie is the wife of Robert A., her first name was actually Caroline and she passed away 20 Jun 1897. I can find no children named after her that would have been of age to write in script in 1876. Does anyone have any references that show she only used her second name? Also does anyone know what "Mifs" stands for? If it is for "Miss" then that doesn't make any sense at all. Thanks for your thoughts.
