How do I designate the location Lanarkshire in Scotland

I apologize if this is a 'less-than-brilliant' question.
Identifying a specific area in the U.S. is easy....town, county, state, USA. For other countries, I get easily confused:
I have an ancestor b. in Baillieston, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Is what I just typed the proper designation? Is Lanarkshire abbreviated (LKS?)...or is it even Lanarkshire..should it be Lanark?
Is there a genealogy source that would give this sort of information for all countries?
Thanks so much for any help you can offer.
Judy

I am looking for info on John McKinnon born 22 Feb 1874 in Shotts Lanark.
His parents were William McKinnon & Williamina Donald. IGI has them listed as McKennon
John married in Newcastle Australia in 1985 & his death cert shows that he was 82 yrs at death and had lived in Aust for 77 yrs. This seems he must have come out with his parents to Aust in 1879?
It could be wrong - his son-in-law filed the death notice, and he might have come out by himself in his teens.

I don't know of any siblings for him but his childrens names were William, John, Mary, Wilhelmina, Elizabeth, George & Francis.

Any help is appreciated

Naomi

AITKEN family, Harthill, Shotts, Lanarkshire, Scotland

Dear all,

I would appreciate informationabout the descendants of William Aitken and Helen McNish/McNeish, both long-time residents of Shotts.

William Aitken was born 1838 in Airdrie. Helen McNish/McNeish was b. 14 Jun 1841 in Ayr. After marrying in Girvan, Ayr in 1866, William and Helen moved to Shotts.

They lived the remainder of their lives in Shotts, as did almost all of their children. William died in 1901 and wife Helen died 15 Oct 1923, both in Harthill, Shotts.

Almost all of the children of William Aitken and Helen McNish/McNeish appear to have married in and around Shotts and to have worked and/or resided in Shotts at least up until the mid-1940s.

Children of William Aitken and Helen McNish/McNeish include:

1. Joseph Aitken b. 1867 and d. 1942 in Harthill, Shotts. Married Sarah Beattie in 1891 in Harthill, Shotts. Children of Joseph and Sarah include Hugh, Mary, William, Sarah, James, Francis, and Ann.

2. William Aitken b. June 1869 in Harthill, Shotts. Married Mary Forsyth in 1898 in Harthill, Shotts.

3. Robert Aitken b. 1873 in Harthill, Shotts, d. 1949 in East Whitburn. Married Elizabeth Sinnet. She died in 1922 on the tail end of the flu epidemic. Children include Robert, James, Mary, and William.

4. James Aitken b. 1883 in Harthill, Shotts.
Married Margaret Malcolm in Whitburn in 1905.
Child Arthur born 1906 in Shotts.

5. Mary Graham Aitken b. 5 Apr 1871 in Harthill, Shotts and died 1939 in Shotts. (A chocolate confectioner. Never married according to death record).

6. Helen "Ellen" Aitken b. 3 Dec 1875 in Harthill, Shotts. Married in 1899 in Shotts Hugh Morgan, former member of Harthill Thistles, in 1899 a professional football player in Bolton, England. In 1901 census, Helen and Hugh are resident in Bolton, England. Children include Douglas b. 1900 in Bolton.

7. Elizabeth Aitken b.1880 in Harthill, Shotts, Lanark. (I have no information on her and have hit a roadblock finding additional records. She does not appear to have married or died in Shotts.)

Any information about this family, and particularly information about Elizabeth above, is much appreciated.

I also have much information to share about this particular Aitken family.

Thanks so much,
Laura
I'm in search of my gg grandparents. Thomas Burns and Elizabeth Nelson, married at 43 Barcaple Street, according to the forms of the congregational union churches, registered at Dennistoun, Lanark in 1902, officiating minister is John Halliday??
My questions are these...
1. Does Barcaple Street still exist?
2. What exactly does "Congregational Union Churches" for that place and time mean? I have read many different explanations, but none seem to be definitive.
3. What organization would Halliday represent?
Thanks very much.
William Albert ESSEY supposedly born approx 1868 Glasgow

Hi

I have been trying to find info on my Great Great Grandfather a WILLIAM ALBERT ESSEY who was supposedly born in Glasgow in approx 1868 give or take a year. William left Scotland for New South Wales in Australia in his late teens and this is where he resided until his death in 1940.

I have just been told that William's biological father was killed in a War and his mother remarried giving William the surname of her 2nd husband which was Essey. The only war around that time appears to have been the 1st Boer War which was from 1880-1881 and then the 2nd Boer War from 1899-1902, in the 2nd war William would've been too old to have changed his name so I would assume it was the 1st??

All I know is that William's mother's name was Kathleen McDonald - I think McDonald was William's father's surname.

Is there any way of locating William's biological father via his war records??? And does anyone have any suggestions on how I can find Williams birth info???

I have searched the Scottish records online but am completely lost. As you will all know there are a lot of McDonald surnames in Scotland...................

Any help would be so greatly appreciated.

Many thanks
They could have been James and Mary Nolan or Edward Nolan and Bridget Gallagher.

Patrick Connolly/Connelly and wife, Elizabeth Nolan, and son, Michael Frank ( 18 mos. old ) were living at 76 George Street in Paisley, Renfrewshire, England during the 1891 census. In the 1881 census, Patrick Connolly/Connelly was living with his parents, Michael and Ann Lang, at 22 Queen Street in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland.

I am searching for any information concerning Patrick Connolly/Connelly and Elizabeth Nolan and their parents and their family origins in Scotland.
Hamilton Palace History Help

Hello Everyone,

My GG Grandfather was a German born musician named Henry Apel. Around 1855 he was invited by the Duke of Hamilton to play, I think he was in a brassband. My GG Grandmother Catherine Thomson lived on Muir Street very close to Hamilton Palace her father Parker Thomson was a flesher (Butcher?) I assume that she worked at for the Hamiltons and that's where she met Henry. Let me get to the point, is there anyway I could find out more about who worked for the Hamilton's and if they had information about my GG Grandfather playing for them. The National Archives is very confusing for me. Not to mention I live in North America. Any advice would be appreciated.

They lived in Crossford Lesmahagow - I believe in Royal George Cottage. The sisters all left Scotland when they married - to two went to Canada, one to New Zealand. Their parents were James McKinlay & Christina Aird. Any Canadian or Kiwi relatives out there?

SWAN family from Shotts/Harthill

This is a long shot. I'm helping a friend research their family history and in particular her Swan relatives from the Shotts area.
Its a long story, including an unexplained adoption, but here is some of what I have.

Francis Swan born C1862 in Ireland married Martha McKay born C1880 in Ireland. Francis was a coal miner. Their first child Annie Ethel Swan born 1898 in Shotts was put up for adoption and was my friends mother.

I have found Francis and Martha's 2nd child William Swan born 1900 in Shotts who married Sarah Ann Dodds. Here are the children I have found of William and Sarah Ann -
William born 1930 Main Street Harthill (married Annie Miller)
Stewart born 1932 Main Street Harthill (married Jean Roy)
Albert born 1934 West Main Street Harthill
Elizabeth Dodds Swan born 1936 Harthill (married Anthony Clay)
John Swan born 1939 Watt Terrace Harthill
David Swan born 1942 Watt Terrace Harthill

It would appear that Swan is a popular surname in the Shotts area but I would dearly love to put my friend Theresa in touch with a living relative.

Francis and Sarah Ann probably had more children but I am wondering if you could reply if any of the above looks at all familiar to you.

Best Regards
Tom

Am trying to follow my ancestry from Scotland. My Nana left Scotland many many years ago and has since lost contact with her family. Her name is Ruby, her brothers are/were Norman, Duncan & William BRADFORD. They were in WW2, 8th Army and the British Army of Occupation in Palestine. All survived WW2.
Her father and grandfather were Regimented Soldiers in the Indian Army (?) before WW1, and her father went on to be the foreman at Glasgow Water Works/Corporation.
Alot of this info is what I could find out in bits & pieces of limited conversations!
After WW2 Ruby left Scotland and came to New Zealand by ship, leaving her brothers behind - her mother left when Ruby was very young, so she was brought up by a nanny, who continued to look after Ruby when her father died. Her nanny died when she was approx. 11-13 years old, making it 1931-1933 (ish).
Any help would be great, is really hard to get this information in New Zealand!

Do the libraries in Glascow have old city directories? I already have death dates of ancestors. Also, anyone know where to stay cheaply. Nothing appears cheap when compared to Canadian dollar! (2.4pounds=1Can dollar) Thanks for any help. Bruce

William NIMMO married Alice LAIRD in Glasgow, 24 March 1922.

My Grandmothers brother was William Nimmo. William was born around 1896. He married Alice Laird at the Douglas Hotel in Glasgow on 24 March 1922. Alice's address prior to the marriage was 53 Copland road, Glasgow.

At the time of their marriage, William was a Post Office Clerk in the Liverpool area. They had a daughter named Annie B. Nimmo born in Birkenhead during 1923. I have been unable to find any other info on the couple between 1922 and 1959. William Nimmo died on the 19th of March 1959 and is buried in the Muiravonside cemetery in Stirlingshire, with other members of his family including my Grandmother Agnes Baxter Emslie Little (nee Nimmo) I have no knowledge of Alice's date of death or her place of burial.

It has been suggested that William Nimmo and his wife moved back to Glasgow at some point.

Can anyone from the Glasgow region shed any light on William Nimmo and his wife and daughter? As I live 12,000 miles away in New Zealand, the public records and electoral rolls are not available to me.

To contact me, please use my email address which is: vabukori@yahoo.com

Any info is gratefully received

Thank you

David Little,

Nelson,
New Zealand.

I am researching these families and I believe they were all contected through marriages.Specifically Grace Fairlie /Robert Morrison married 1836(Grace died and Robert Married Jane McColl(1854) who was the widow of John Boyle).Jane named their daughter (born after Robt's death)Grace Fairley Morrison. Also 1st daughter born to Robert and Jane Morrison was named Jane Main Morrison(my great grandmother)Confusion sets in at this point.. Sommervill shows up as my Grandmothers' mother on her death cert. (Not true) the name of my grandmother's mother was Jane Main Morrison. The name Jane Marshall shows up on my grandmothers'marriage cert. as mother.(?Who is she)
(Jane MColl Boyle Morrison died 1874)Jane Main Morrison Douglas) died 1890.My grandmother Jeannie Morrison Douglas was married in 1898 in Airdrie.Lived the remainder of her life in Coatbridge Married to Jimmy McLees. All of the above names are from the Glasgow Area except Jane McColl who was born in Girven,Ayr-1824.If anyone is researching any or all of these lines. I believe that Robert was the second son of William and Mary (Curran) Kearney and he was born in Glasgow on the 7/4/1910. He married Mary Agnes Macklin and they had at least one child Robert Anthony. Mary (Macklin) Kearney died some years before her husband Robert and he died on the 16/1/1993 at Stobhilll Hospital Glasgow. I would be very grateful for any help in tracing this family

ORR family of Shotts

My great grandmother, Barbara Cleland Orr, was born 1848 at Shotts. She married Andrew Mungall, and her brother was William Orr, born 1847, married to Elizabeth Waddell. Barbara and William's parents were James Orr (1817-1905) and Jane Orr (1824-1890) of Hill Farm, and their parents were Thomas Orr (1778-1864) and Barbara Cleland (1783-1856), also of Hill, Shotts. Any connections?
