Yes you can look at my family tree. I have just received my certificate with James Alexander and Helen Reith. I was hoping to get a fathers name but before 1855 they said they don't have them.
Hello, I am researching my ancestor John Sherret/Shirret/Sherit/Sherrat B. 02 July 1741 and Christened at Arbuthnott, Kincardine. Does any one know of him or his spouse Isabel Watson (married 26th Dec 1800)? His father's name is listed as John Sherrat.
Apparently he worked as a shoemaker at 'Mill of Ratties'. Does anyone have any information about this place as I cannot seem to find it where I have looked. Any help would be appreciated!

Hello... I know you put your message up quite some considerable time ago and may already have the information but thought I'd let you know I have an Andrew Mowatt (1804), Married to Ann Middleton on 31 Dec 1842. She is his SECOND wife, his first wife being Elizabeth Low. I have a copy of Andrew's Death Certificate which lists these two marriages and his parents are listed as John Mowatt and Jane Henderson. I think someone has already given you the name Jean Henderson, but I believe these names were often inter-changed, so I think we're on the right track. I hope this has been helpful.

Have you have made a trip to North-East Scotland with the aim of discovering your family history? If so, you are invited to share feedback on your experiences via an online survey: http://www.survey.dundee.ac.uk/ancestral-research

As the specific focus of the study is on the historic counties of Aberdeenshire, Banffshire and Kincardineshire, responses are sought only from those with ancestral connections to these areas and who are now resident elsewhere in Scotland, in the UK or further afield. The survey will be open until midnight on 23rd April.

Your participation will contribute to research being carried out for my Masters degree and the data collected will be used by Aberdeen & North East Scotland Ancestral Tourism Partnership to inform future developments.

Participation is entirely voluntary and no personal data from respondents will be retained. You are welcome to forward details of the survey to anyone else you know who has visited the region for the purposes of ancestral research.

Re: MASSON,James and ROBB, Margaret

Hi Masson Researchers,
Although this is a reply to a post about six years ago, I thought it useful for other researhers to have a copy of my own findings regarding this couple:

It has been troubling that records show that there were two sets of three children born to James Masson and Margaret Robb, namely William, Charles and Jane sunamed Measson (a variant of Masson) in the Parish of Durris and another three namely Mary, James and John surnamed Masson in the Parish of Fetteresso. Their birth/baptism records may be seen at http://sdrv.ms/XMFOPN

Although have I shown all the children as one family on my tree, I had nagging doubts that they may be different families headed by two different couples with the same names.

What I hoped would dispell these doubts would be to find some of the siblings living in the same address. Again, although not conclusive evidence, I was pleased to find John Masson with spouse Janet Gerard baptising their son Alexander, and as witnessess also baptising a son (another John), William Masson and spouse Sarah Dench living in the same small settlement of 'Links of Arduthie'. This is all shown on Alexander Masson's Birth & Baptism record (1819) which is a combined record for William Masson's son's birth & baptism as shown here. Hopefully somewhere further evidence will turn up that this William Masson is the same person as William Measson, but until then will have to be satisfied that our John and a William Masson were living in (at least) very close proximity.

There was also a discussion on the non-active Stonehaven Genealogy group (requires Yahoo or facebook membership) about this same William Masson as at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Stonehaven_Genealogy/message/3... . He married Sarah Dench (Sarah Louisa Dinch) and they had two children John and Jane (Jean). Jean's death record states that her father William was a Prison Governor. I managed to contact Bob Masson, who started the thread on the Stonehaven Genealogy Group and as it turns out his ancestor was not a descendant of this William Masson after all, however the ensuing postings in the group have helped with our trees.

If you find any more on William and his family in your researches, I'd love to hear. I also have little so far on William's siblings Charles and Jane, apart from their Baptism records. For the other siblings Mary, James and 'our' John I've a little more as seen on my tree (for those with ancestry.com access).

Kind regards,
Jeff Angus

Falconer / Strachan marriage 1739 - Straton/Stratton?

Hello,

I'm having some difficulty with an Alexander Strachan who married Anne Falconer in Fordoun on 29 May 1739.
I'm fairly confident that Anne was born in Dunnottar on the 08 Jan 1710. Her son, James Strachon (Strachan) was born in Laurencekirk, 14 Oct 1744. Alexander is named in his son's birth record as Strachan and there is a record of his marriage to Anne.

The problem is that the only Alexander Strachan birth that I can find in the ScotlandsPeople registery for Kincardineshire in that time is... dubious. This is for 21 July 1715, Marykirk. Yes, right place, right time but this Alexander was born to descendents of the Thorntons of Strachan, a line that goes back to lords and ladies.

It seems to me more likely that Alexander's surname is a corruption of Straton or Stratton and there are Alexanders of these names also born in the right place and time (Stratton 1723, Garvock & Straton 1705, Dunnottar). I can't find marriages for these names to prove/disprove them. Has anyone else here researched this or can shed some light on this?

Thank you,

Matthew Davidson.

Have been researching Lees family and noticed your query about Mary Ann Lees and the Forrest children. By now maybe you have found out that the children are living with Isabella Napier in the 1891 census, not Mary Ann Lees. Your query piqued my interest. Your assumption about Mary Lees is correct.

He was blacklisted for union activities and therefore worked in Canada for a while. He returned to Scotland and ended up in Newton Stewart. My father remembers his grandfather well - sandie Taylor. A keen fisherman and and claims he was related to Donald Dinnae!
Would love to hear from you
Claire Murray
Ps took my dad on a visit to Stonehaven harbour museum. I had just decided today to search Galloway after 12 years of Galway after Tyrone Bowes of Irishorigenes.com assessed my male cousin's Martin (1749-today) Y-DNA test results. He found the biggest match was to Maxwells and secondary to Ramsay not Irish Galway Martins! So that is why I am on here and then I found your post! Must be on the right track!

Given that it is very unusual to be able to prove Scottish ancestry back beyond the mid-1700's (due to the nature of the Scottish records), it would be very helpful if you could share with others how you were able to prove that David Stephen (your ggg grandfather) was the same David Stephen who was the son of William Stephen & Jean Rodger.

I know on occasion it can be done (for instance if you find a multi-generational gravestone, or a will, or sasine-record), so it would be of great help if you could give the source in this instance.

Stephen (Stieven) family Kincardine

Reasearching my family tree, I have managed to get back to William Stephen, born Fourdon 1725 who married Jean Rodger born Montrose (?)1735. They had two sons: David b 1755 in Fettercairn (my great-great-great-grandfather); and James b1757. However, I cannot get further back with any certainty. I believe William was the son of David Stephen b 1691 in Arbuthnott, who married Anne Rait, b 1702 in Monifieth, but can not be certain. Anyone with a Stephen family tree who can help?

My ancestor, David Stephen, born in Fettercairn in 1755, married Helen Kemlo, born 1758 in Kinneff. Her parents were John and Jane Kemlo. David and Helen had five children -- James, George(my great-great-grandfather),Helen,John and William.
I have only just come across your post and hope this may be of some interest to you.

Re: Moir Family Banchory Ternan

Hi Moir66,

Thanks once again for your reply. Yes, I'm aware of the earliest surviving parish records (Errol, Perthshire).

I don't have Moir's in my own ancestry. The point of my e-mail was just to highlight to those new to genealogy that statutory records of births/marriage and deaths; census returns; and parochial records are not enough in themselves to allow us to trace back beyond the mid-1700's with any degree of certainty.

Prior to that time, and if we are using those sources only, then we can only make assumptions, albeit in many cases educated assumptions (for example if the family lived at the same farm for several generations).

As you've pointed out, there are of course exceptions, and you are correct in that multi-generational gravestones, wills, sasine records, poor-law records etc can occasionally provide the required information. Sadly for the majority of working-class families these are the exception rather than the rule. You seem to have been fortunate in that respect - allied with the time and hard work you have put into it !

Thanks again for your replies, and good luck with your quest.

Don
