William was born in Forres in 1893 - his mother died when he was 2 and he was adopted by Robert and Annie Finlayson who at the time lived in Tomnahurich Street, Inverness, then Castle Street. He joined the army in 1910 (Cameron Highlanders) and served in WW1, attaining the rank of Lance Sgt. On leaving the army in 1919, he tried unsuccessfully to join Inverness Police (just as it is now, being a Freemason which he was not, got you in). William had an uncle Thomas Smith in Inverness.

I have found out that William went to Canada in June 1920.
