Alfred Wigley and Rose Menzies

Can someone help? I'm trying to find the marriage of my Great great gran's Annie Anthony's (nee Wigley)brother Alfred Wigley to Rose Menzies.
I know that Rose came from Scotland and that at least 2 of their children were born in the Dundee area.
Alfred and Rose were in Portsea in 1891, Alfred being in service with the Navy from 1873 to 1906.
I can't find their marriage anywhere so I assume it took place in Scotland. The possible dates I'm looking at would be anywhere from 1881 to 1888, as their first child was born then.
I have a fair amount of information on the Wigley family if anyone recognises these names as being part of their family.

Cannot find where Andrew Stewart came from.

The specific year is 1764 in Warren, Georgia, USA.

I cannot tell for sure where Andrew Stewart was born, however, the Andrew Stewart who was born in Scotland does not have a date or place of death, while our Andrew Stewart in "Georgia" does not have a date or place of birth. Putting the two together makes since for now.

Many Stewart GED files Start with "Andrew Stewart born in 1764 Warren, Ga". The problem with that is the 1764 date references the date mentioned by David Dobson's book "Scots in Georgia and the Deep South, 1735-1845 and not his date of birth. The quote from that book says "Stewart, Andrew, to leave Georgia in January 1764. (Ga.Gaz.#42)"

The Georgia Gazette #42 (Ga.Gaz.#42) says: "As Mr. Andrew Stewart intends to leave this province, he desires any person to whom he is indebted to come immediately and receive payment, and any person indebted to him to settle the same."

If Andrew was born in 1760 or 1764 how could he collect for or pay debts in 1764? He would be no older that 4 years old. His father, another Andrew Stewart could deal with debts. You must see by the paragraphs above that Andrew has to have been born before 1764.

I believe at this point that there were two Andrew Stewarts (father and son)in Georgia. Ergo, Andrew Stewart born 23 Aug 1719 (father) and Andrew Stewart born 9 Jun 1760, both Renfrewshire, Scotland have been added to my GED file..

My investigation continues. Any help would be appreciated

Scotland Death Records and Procurator Fiscal

I've just received a paper copy of my grt grandfathers death records from Scotlandspeople as they were unreadable online. He died 20/2/1903.

Along with the death entry I have a copy of the Register of corrected entries.

The info on the RCE is the same as the death entry ie no change to cause of death etc. Infact the only change is to the time of death which on the death entry says 3h 15m PM and on the RCE the word "about" come before the time.

The place of death is 160 Cathcart Street, Glasgow which I am presuming was his home at the time. His cause of death (heart failure) was certified by a casualty doctor. Does this mean he died at home but was taken to casualty to be certified? Or would this have been a police doctor?

The Dep Procurator Fiscal signed off the RCE on 29th March 1903 - why did it take over two months?

Would I be able to access the Proc Fiscal records on this case and if so how do I do that from England?

Sorry to ask so many questions.

I have updated my index of document images I have available from ScotlandsPeople. Since each of my documents has other names on it and of course I have also purchased wrong documents I have made a list of names that are on those documents. Go to my site:

http://www.geocities.com/egnisbet/Genealogy/Family.htm

Then scroll down and click on My Scotland Records Library and the index will be displayed. They are alphabetical and include the year, the type of document, surname, forenames, parents names and a document reference in the far right column.

If you see any records of interest make note of the information and email using the Email Me button near the top of the page. I will send you a copy of the documents you are interested at no charge. I believe that genealogy is all about sharing the information you find.

Hopefully you will find something of interest that proves to be helpful.

Regards,
Eric Nisbet
Ontario Canada

New question about scottish certificates - births between 1901 and 1944

Dear all

I have been reading some of the earlier posts about scottish records. I am looking for two birth certificates between 1909 and 1944ish. I understand that only records 100 years old are available. Does this mean not available to order on-line or not at all?

If they can be ordered somehow, how much info do I need? Because I can't search records to find an exact reference and place, all I have is a year in each case!

Sorry if this has been covered before, this is my first scottish search!

Many thanks

Andrea

Errors Transcribing Gender on ScotlandsPeople?

This may sound a bit odd, but are mistakes transcribing gender common? I have been searching for a male ancestor in Scotland. I believe his birth is listed in the statutory register on the ScotlandsPeople website (name, gender and year are a match).

Now here is where it gets confusing. The IGI has transcribed this record and lists the gender as female. This girl also appears on the 1861, 1871 and 1881 censuses. Her forename is Stewart, which isn’t traditionally a girl’s name. There is no record of her birth on ScotlandsPeople.

I realize the IGI is open to errors, but the census seems to back up their data - unless the census transcriptions are also inaccurate. Before I purchase credits to use on ScotlandsPeople (this is my first time using the site), can someone please advise me how accurate the information is?

Any assistance or advice would be greatly appreciated. I’m so confused...

Could an illegitimate child be listed in an OPR entry just like a legitimate birth entry? (except, perhaps, for the word "lawful")? We have an ancestor in Ayrshire that we suspected was an illegitimate son (b. abt 1824) with a mistress (because the father is married to someone else during the time within 13 miles of this birth), but there IS an OPR record for his birth. Can we assume that the couple was married if there is an OPR record for his birth? We can't find an OPR Marriage, of course.

A second question - there is another possible illegitimate birth from abt. 1818 in Loudoun, Ayr, that we are looking for. There is no OPR record. Is the next best place to look the Kirk Sessions? Thank You.

are there any Falkirk's other than Falkirk in Stirling(shire)?

Hi,

I was recently told that my grandfather, Francis Arthur McClure (1861-1930) was born in Falkirk, Scotland. This information came from a relative who has been researching my grandmother's family for 60 years. He said that my grandfather's nephew, who had some interest in genealogy, had found my grandfather's place of birth.
My question is...are there any Falkirk's other than Falkirk in Stirling(shire)? I checked online birth records through Scotland's People and could not find any matches. So, was there another Falkirk, OR a village with a name that would have sounded like Falkirk?

Please let me know.
Sincerely,
Cara Michaels

Hi,

Alastair McIntyre – webmaster of Electric Scotland - has completed his long task of scanning and putting on line the complete 6 volume set of the “Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland
Edited by Francis H. Groome (1892-6)”.

This huge set is packed with info and Alastair has also posted hi-res scans of all maps and all pictures to boot.

Look here (it is fully indexed):
http://www.electricscotland.com/history/gazetteer/index.htm

This was a monumental mega-task done by Alastair - simply hoping to help others.

I that hope you might join me in a big “hats off” and thank you to Alastair for his efforts. He can be contacted through his site.
http://www.electricscotland.com/index.html

Cheers,

Larry
I need help with a location in Scotland, possibly on the Isle of Skye. The placename is "Totaroam." I can't find it in any online gazetteer, and a Google or Yahoo search simple brings up a handful of genealogical references that are the source of the name in the first place.

Does anyone recognize the placename? Or recognize is as a misspelling of one?

Fellow Scottish researchers, in particular those looking at Midlothian Fife and Sterling.

Richard Robertson is the editor of Scots Find http://www.scotsfind.org. These are his words "My Scottish ancestors are from Midlothian, Fife and Sterling and I tend to concentrate on databases relating to those counties unless something
just happens to fall into my hands".

Some of his databases on the web site are the Canongate Marriage Registers, Canongate Burial Records 1820-1851, which he is up to 1831 along with photos, and other registers.

Check it out. Thanks to Ian Downie he/I found my ancestor Amelia Hunter Downie. She died of small pox just seven months after her birth. It was on the Canongate Burial Registry.

Thank you Richard Robertson for your time and effort in providing genealogical information for others to review and hope to find information

I'm planning a trip to Scotland and Ireland with family and friends in May and am seeking information and/or suggestions. A few family members and I are planning to arrive in Glasgow a few days prior to the arrival of the rest of our party to have some time to visit the land of our ancestors (Loch Lomond). We have booked rooms at a small B&B in Gartocharn but are not sure how we will manage to get from Glasgow to Gartocharn. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Also, if anyone knows of places not to miss while we're there I'd love to hear about them. We'll be in Scotland for 10 days and Ireland 7.

Thanks in advance!!!

Cindy McFarland Michael
cleemich@neo.rr.com

Something fresh to try - Scottish Genealogy Society forum

Hi,

Here’s something, that although not “brand new” (it apparently was set up Jan 1, 2005), may be of interest to some.

It’s a board at the Scottish Genealogy Society, with the server residing in Scotland.
http://www.yabbers.com/phpbb/index.php?mforum=scotsgen

It may be a new place to post queries and more - as YOU may wish to select.

With more than a few advanced options and more relative subdivisions than many boards, including this one, it perhaps may be a plus – time will tell. i.e private messages, polls, and so on……. And the entire site has been structured with regard to Scotland only.

It appears to be a fusion of chat with query, and - ONLY as you may wish to select.

Different!

There are absolutely no pop-ups, VERY few advertisements (like 3 in text only).

Surname boards, all counties, special interest, and more- all on one page. -Much less clicking. You can see what is new in a flash.

Unused a lot so far (to say the least), but I think it shows, and has real promise.

Refreshing, and unique with a new look interface.

It’s totally free and quite easy to register without declaring all of your personal info and then end up receiving the typical endless stream of spam ads.

I’m going to start supporting it and see where the road leads……..

Hope to see ya there…….

It could be what WE make it….be cool…be good…

Regards,

Larry
This is just to let you know that the search engine for the Old Parish Registers at www.freereg.org.uk is being Beta tested at the moment and should be online soon.

FreeREG is a sister project to FreeCEN, but aims to put all the OPRs online – eventually. As you can imagine, it is a huge project and will take a long time to do. We have County Co-ordinators in place for Moray, Fife, Angus, Banff, East Lothian, Orkney, Aberdeen, Caithness, Sutherland and Nairn but I would be delighted to hear from anyone who would like to take on a county.

I can also arrange for transcribing to be done by parish. All you need is to have, or have access to, a microfiche reader (the film is cut up into strips) - we use a small program called Speedreg to enter the data into. Unfortunately we cannot have cds for this project.

This transcription will have far more information in it than is available at present on the IGI. If you are at all interested you can contact us via the above website or write to me, Anne Fish, (Scotland Co-ordinator) at annef1@tiscali.co.uk for more information.
He was a Sea Captain so I can only assume he was from a coastal area of that country.
He ended up in Cape May County, NJ and married Sarah Atkinson abt 1830. They had 2 sons: Isaac (b. 3 Jun 1831) and Elmer (b. 1833). John was lost at sea in 1838 off the coast of NJ. Sarah did remarry after 7 years to David Feaster.
I don't have a clue as to where to start looking for my McCormick kin in Scotland.......sure hope some kind soul(s) will take pity on me.

http://sites.netscape.net/geneslady/homepage

I am wondering if anyone can help me out. I am trying to trace my Great Grandfather, David Jones. He was born 20 Jan 1897. He was married to Helen Ferguson in 1916. He had two children Jean Elizabeth Jones (not sure of date pre-1920) and my grandfather David Morgan Jones in 1920 (born in Falkirk High Street). He is supposed to have died a few years after my grampa was born, at sea. My great grandmother supposidly remarried and had another six children to a William Duncan - can;t find any record of this.

Could my GGrandfather have went missing at sea and been presumed missing then registered as dead - if this is the case where could I find a record of this. I'm clutching at straws that someone can help.

Thanks Gillian

I am looking for a Thompson who went to County Westmeath Ireland possibly early 1800s. William Thompson. I don't know whether he married his wife Anne in Ireland or Scotland. They are both buried in Ireland. They had at least two sons, James and William(2) who possibly returned to Scotland. William's(2) wife, Isabella, died quite young and is also buried in Ireland as is James' son Michael. Michael is said to have been left in Irleland and was raised by his cousins the Ryders. I have no trace of William(2) or James and his wife. There is another Isabella Thompson(Beveridge) also buried in Co. Westmeath who is listed as the daughter of a William Thompson, Esq. of Kinross but I do not know whether they are part of my Thompsons. The second Isabella and William(1) were both born c. 1792. Anyone have any information that might fit? Thank you.

Susan Williamson

We have reached a complete dead end on the name Frizzell from a certain William Frissell who fought in the battle of Mancester in 1651. He was captured along with an Edward Frissell and both were banished to America in May of 1652. I know this is a very long lime ago and I've had a terrible time finding anyone who can help but still I'm posting this message in hopes that a Frizzell (any spelling) in Scotland may have records dating back that far and can tell us who these two were, how they were related and where they were from in Scotland.
Any information would be very appretiated.
Thank you.

D Frizsell

I am looking for anyone researching FORRESTs in Lanarkshire or Midlothian that might have knowledge of a (Grandfather) Longcase clock crafted by William Hislop of Biggar in the mid 1800's. The case may have been supplied by Andrew Robertson, a local man from Biggar, who made longcase clock cases for the trade. A 50 year old oral history related to my parents by my grandparents indicates that a pair of these clocks were given as gifts within the family some time before my grandparents emmigrated to Canada in 1912.

A digital picture of our clock is available for comparison if you think you might have a link.
