I have just come across an ancestor who was married 'by declaration' and not in church (1920's) and in the 6th column of the marriage certificate it is said to be an 'irregular marriage' and 'by warrant of sheriff substitute'. Can anyone fill me in on the details of what constituted an 'irregular marriage' (bride already with child?) ? Many thanks.
