My ancestor Isabel McQuarters/McQuatters married John Bannon an Irishman in the very early 1800's and at this point in time, I do not have the marriage record that would indicate if they married in Scotland or Ireland. Isabel McQuarters gave her birthplace as Graven, Scotland in other records and so I thought that perhaps I should do some looking for any people of that name in that area about 1775-1810. Bannon was a military man and it could be that his service took him to Scotland, or it could be that Isabel took up residence in Ireland before they married. Graven, Scotland does not come up much in a search so I am wondering if there is such a place, where it is and how accessible any parish/cemetary records would be for the area. This is my first try at Scottish ancestry - her last name has been spelled both McQuarters and McQuatters - which leads me to think it likely that she still had an accent, enough for the transcriber to write it the way he/she heard it.

Perhaps Girvan, Ayrshire.

John Bannon Event Type: Pension Event Year Range: 1760-1913 Event Place: United Kingdom Birthplace: Down Birth Year (Estimated): 1807 ----------------------------------------- Not finding a Bapts. for an Isabel McQuaters in Scotland 1800-1820,But there is a Robert McQuaters and Isabel Lamont having issue in Dailly, Ayrshire ,6 mls. from Girvan. As Girvan would be more known elsewhere perhaps she used it .Not out of the ordinary to use a bigger town/city near where you were born when you have moved away.

The surname McQuatters is the same as McWalters and McWatters (Mac and Mc are the same), so try substituting a W for the Qu in your searches.

Thank you - that sounds logical and might be the clue I'm looking for!
