I have come to the place where I must leave Ireland and head into Scotland which is uncharted territory for me. I am looking for the surnames McElroy, Adams and Allen (needle in a haystack, right?) Joseph Adams died abt 1907 in Londonderry and was born in Scotland abt 1820. He was married to Ann(e) McElroy born abt 1831 in Scotland and died 1912 in Londonderry. John Allen died in Belfast in 1922 and was supposedly born in Scotland around 1828.
I know it was quite common for people to immigrate to Ireland for work at that time. Any ideas as to what part of Scotland I should search first?

Do you know if they married in Ireland or Scotland ?
If in Scotland you could try lookingfor their marriage on Scotlands people .
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
If it was after 1855 the marriage cert will also give you their parents names .

Joseph and Anne were born in Ireland. Not sure about John Allen. For the next generation I know only their names. I can guess at the birth and marriage dates from their children's ages. A family history written by a great aunt said that this generation came to Ireland from Scotland.
Thanks for the link and for taking the time to answer.

No Allen is not purely English .
If you check out the "What's in a Name" on your Ancestry home page it will tell you the origins of the name and the distribution of the families through the different census .

There were a large number of people with the name Allen in northern Ireland. So far I haven't traced any family to England.
