hi all , i'm researching some Scottish links for a friend at work. She never knew anything about her grandfather as he was from Russia and had changed his name to an English one.

I have to say the Scottish govt have been quite canny with their resources having to pay just to even search records must make them a fortune! Are there any good free resources out there for Scottish records?

Hello Mel

I have put together a webpage with some useful links for researching in the UK - try http://genealogy.bathgatehall.co.uk/UKuseful.htm - this includes links to the Familysearch, FreeCen etc

However - there are some that are dependent on which area of Scotland you are researching in!

The GEBUKI pages for each county will give you a guide as will sites like this and Rootschat and TalkingScot

Some other sites for you to try:

Really Useful Sources: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~lancsopc/R...

Cyndi's List: http://www.cyndislist.com/uk/sct

And as Fiona mentioned, GENUKI: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/index.html

Good luck!

Hughwallis IGI site is free ,and has records from Parish and until 1875 ,But you must know were they were born.so Ancestry Census Records are a must have. Then you can use Scotlandspeople with more info to hand.

Ancestry Scottish census records are NOT a must. They are transcriptions and have a lot of misreadings. Using scotlandspeople for census records, you get to see the images of the original records, and make up your own mind if any handwriting is not clear.
Sorry to be so negative, but you should always go for the BEST records.
Gordon.

You can spend a lot of Money trawling through Census records on Scotlandspeople.I find knowing where to look is a good help.Ancesters with a Clan Surname is murder in Scotlands people.Don't know how much i have spent looking for a Robertsons death.

GordonPert Johnson.I did not SAY not to use Census from Scotlandspeople. All info found outwith has to be checked on official records, but you need to know where to look first.STOP lecturing me on my info and try and not bring more doubt into the minds of the Posters

You could try www.freecen.org.uk which will give you information for the 1841 and 1851 Census. However I agree with Gordon, scotlandspeople is the only site to provide authentic data for Scotland. If you think it is expensive try researching and sending off for ENGLISH certificates and information, which my husband has to do.

Janet _S30 ,I have researched my Husbands English side, and overall found it cheaper than Scotlandspeople. All research depends on the records and years involved.
The poster is on Ancestry, and should make use of the Scottish Census on Ancestry. It lets her know where they are now living.People do move about. There are also other sites with records on them.

I see you and Gordon ,don't appear to share your family trees on Ancestry ! on the other hand opened my tree for Gordon to see were i am coming from.

It is quite correct that I do not pl;ace my family tree online. This is for a number of reasons. 1. Some of my data comes from people who gave me their researched data on the basis that it would be held privately. 2. My database contains a number of living people, and that must not be revealed in case of identity theft. 3. When in the past a now deceased friend with a similar tree gave part of it to other people, these people then placed it online with alterations which were not factually correct. I do not wish to be associated with bad research. there are other reasons, but these are the most important.
On the subject of FreeCen, only 1841 is in any way complete for Scotland. The other census years are fragmentary on FreeCen, so it is not as comprehensive as scotlandspeople.

Unless you put in a Death date ,people from c1888 are not shown on Ancestry.
You had a quick look at my tree.Would you be surprised that i have only viewed the 1911 Scottish Census .All other Scottish census came from Ancestry. Are you aware that Familysearch, and Hughwallis site have the registered BM data from Scotland Registery office.1855-1875.So if i look the 1881 Census on this site, and pick out an issue born before 1875 ,i can usually find it on those sites, that are free.
