Ellen,

I think I should point out (for others benefit) that familysearch doesn't provide access to the actual birth certificates. Therefore details from the certificates such as the exact place of birth, the fathers occupation, the parents marriage date & place and the name of the informant, are not shown.

Likewise, the details from a marriage doesn't include either spouses parents names, their occupations, the exact place of marriage, the home addresses, and the witnesses.

Mel, if you need some help in understanding Scottish records and some assistance in navigating your way around the different options you could try the Scotland's Family Tree forum. Very friendly with some enthusiastic members and mods to help you out.

Steve, You seem to be a researcher, without bias! All Searches, are full of Rabbit Holes, divorces, family names same, adoptions, etc. this is why, "Roots" was such a good book, on researching a person ancestry. Surnames, in Historical Time, are really recent, and can be very tricky, location, location, location (just like Real Estate Sales) are very important, on this Continent, the New World (you betcha, try tracing Native Americans) regardless, its a 'Puzzle', that can be put together, depending how many Generations a person wants to go back! D.N.A. search can give a person a 'Location' where to start their search! My success on my Scottish Side was Easy, because of Highland History is well documented, because of the War's for the Crown of Scotland. English, is tough because of the common name, but my Native American Side, is clean on my Father's Side, very blurred on my mother's side. Bummer. alot would depend on where they lived - the volunteers at Dumfries Library posted the whole 1851 census online years ago, they also have records about ships registry. Also Canada has their ships manifest free online, but you have to know the ship/year and port to go looking, you can narrow down the search free at CastleGarden. If he changed his name legally their might be postings in the local newspaper prior to court approval. Some old city directories are online and free to peruse, but again you need to know what city and year and occupation.
