I have been trying to search for information re my great great grandmother Catherine Manson.
She was born in 1826 in either Glasgow or Edinburgh. Her immigration documents state Edinburgh, but her son says on her death certificate she came from Glasgow. She appears on the 1841 census in Glasgow.
She emigrated to South Australia in 1849. The year of her arrival she married fellow scot Archibald Shiels in the St Pauls Church of England.
I have been through and exhausted all Catherine Mansons born in 1826 who appear in the parish registers. She was not Presbyterian.
As she was married with Church of England rites, raised her 7 children in these and was buried in the Church of England cemetery in Gundagai NSW, I have to conclude Catherine was not Presbyterian like her husband, whose family have been readily traceable. I have to conclude now, since finding her death notice, that she was originally Episcopalian.
I wondered how readily it is to get access to such records in Glasgow or Edinburgh. Would it be worth paying a researcher or writing to the churches. How much do you pay them to look up material. I have a consistent year of birth (1826) and a father's name (Robert). Has anyone had any success in tracing Scottish Episcopalians??

The original records are mostly in the hands of the diocesan offices, but some published transcriptions - mainly N.E.Scotland - are held at the Scotlandspeople Centre in Edinburgh, and in other places such as the library of North East Scotland FHS. The University of Dundee library has some records from churches in the local diocese.

Hi,
Thankyou, that is what I feared. Bit hard to search these in Australia.

The Archives at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow hold church records for various denominations and may be able to help you.

Thank you kindly.
I guess what I am trying to ask, any suggestions about how an Australian would be able to search such records. Anyone now any willing, cheap but good researchers. My target areas would be Glasgow and/or Edinburgh.
