Please be in touch ... again. We need to consider, all over again, what we may (or may not) have previously exchanged. Meanwhile, this George Walker is now in my online database: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d... . His inclusion in my "tree" has become possible via his wife's family ties.

Some of what we may need to review has to stay off-the-record, for now, so try my e-address: rogerdhughes1(at)gmail.com .

Their children Charles John, Edith Mary, Georgina, George Gordon and Robert McKenzie. Edith Mary was my Great Grandmother.
Colin, I'm also related to Thomas Dawson - my ggggrandfather through his son David. Though I'm in the US we visited Scotland last fall and were able to meet Stephen Dawson! Do you know of any family residing in the US? My grandfather David (another one) came here with his parents and siblings and am looking to see if any of the branch are still here. He went to Connecticut but his remaining family stayed in Ohio. Would love to find some old pictures of the family.

The Forth Iron Works no longer exist - it had a very short existence, and as far as I am aware, made very little profit from its operations there.

It became the village of Oakley in Fife, and that village is now larger than the neighbouring village of Carnock, - and Carnock would have been the main Parish Register when F.I.W. was operating. My Great-Grandfather was born in Oakley, when his father was an Iron-Stone miner there for a short period, before bringing the family back to Clackmannanshire.

8th April 1804 in Dunblane Daniel Cameron, weaver and slater, to Margaret McIsaek.
Both in this parish married by Mr Stirling, Dunblane.

That's the marriage entry for James parents as it's written on Scotlands People, assuming that daniel married at approx 20 years of age he would have been born around 1784, i've found a birth in 1785 for Daniel Cameron, but father isn't James, there's also a birth for a Donald Cameron born 1777 father listed as James mother as Janet. If the list(below) of children is correct the 1st daughter would have Daniels mums name Janet/Jean, which would tie in with the birth mother for Donald.
Hope i havent confused you further. Good luck with the rest of your tree.
Ruth

as for Daniel/Donald and Margarets children ive found births for :-
Alexander 1804
James 1812
John 1815
William 1818
Peter 1821
Hugh 1822
Jean 1826
David 1829
all born in Dunblane to Daniel and Margaret.
There is a death for a Daniel Cameron in Dunblane in 1856 lists that he is married but doesnt say to whom, and hes a stone quarrier, its a nephew that reg the death (William Christie) the father is listed as John but has been amended but its not a great image so i cant make out what the amendment says.

Not my family.

One important thing you need to know is that the names Donald and Daniel are used interchangeably in Scotland. I think it has something to do with the Gaelic pronunciation of the name.

I have learned that sometimes marriages can't be found, that not all of a families children were baptised and sometimes none of them, if the family attended a non-conformist church your chances of finding records is reduced greatly.

The best free site for Scotland records is FamilySearch.org. At their website home page scroll down to see the catagories of databases and click on "United Kingdom and Ireland". When you get to that list, click on the Place name "Scotland" or scroll down until you see the Scotland records. In their database "Scotland, Marriages, 1561-1910", I found the following: Daniel Cameron & Margaret Mcisack md. 8 Apr 1804 in Dunblane, Perth, Scotland.

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/ is another useful, free, site for information about Scotland research and specific places in Scotland. You can find very nice paris maps at http://www.scotlandsfamily.com/parish-maps.htm

Good luck with your research!
Linda

P.S. I tried an online Scotland Gazeteer for Denclare and Denclair - no such place found.

Any clues on where I would find Donald Cameron of Denclare? Where is Denclare? Thanks, I'm searching for info on Generation I and II. And any siblings of James in III.
1. James Cameron of Scotland
II. Donald of Denclare, son of James Married Margaret McIssac
III. Children of Donald and Margaret: Alexander, George, James b 1811 in Edinburgh (my great great great grandfather came to USA in 1852), Margaret, William, John, Peter, Jean and David.
I do not have the 'world' ancestry at the moment, any clues on how I can find the birth date or any info on Donald Cameron of Denclare and back to James Cameron of Scotland. The "Forth Iron Company" commenced building their works near Dunfermline in March, 1845. In July, 1846, they began to make iron. In February, 1847, they had collected a population of 2500 souls, engaged about four furnaces, and the raising the coal and iron-stone to supply them. Two more furnaces were about to be erected, and rolling-mills are to be added; so that in a year or two the population will amount to at least 4000 souls, collected in this short time in a locality hitherto covered only with a scanty agricultural population

Hi Stephen,
Do you know the ancestry of Christina Stevenson? My Stevenson family lived at Park Farm in Clackmannan fom the 1820s through at least the 1840s. I have info on the Stevensons, if they are connected.
Regards,
Marny Janson

Hi There Colin, my name is Stephen Dawson from the village of New Sauchie, Clackmannanshire, Scotland, and i am a direct descendant of Thomas Dawson and Helen Wilson`s 10th child, or 7th son, Joseph Dawson, born 1855 who married christina stevenson, who are my great grandparents. The child you have missing in your letter is Allan Dawson, their 6th son, as Lynn also did not know about either, he was born in Coalsnaughton, parish of Clackmannan on 16-02-1853, died 31-05-1853, aged 3 months and 14 days ibid. so Colin what descendant are you providing the data for, and at what line does this line take going back to Thomas. Where are you from then Colin ?, are you in U.K. or abroad, i await your reply, bye Stephen Dawson.

I have just stumbled across the Dawson thread and make a somewhat belated entrance ! I am connected to the Dawsons indirectly thro’ marriage and have been doing some research towards providing a surprise 80th birthday package for a direct descendant of Thomas Dawson and Helen Wilson thro’ their son John ( the 2nd child ) . The family were mostly coal miners in Coalsnaughton in Tillicoultry Parish of Clackmannan . I had difficulty over finding a marriage record for Thomas and Helen and am of the opinion that Lynn is correct in assuming that the record found for Thomas Lawson is a transcription error from the original doc.( GROS Data 468/00 0030 0238 ) . David appears in the 1851 census return as being born in 1846 in Tiilicoultry Parish and living in Coalsnaughton . There appear to have been 9 siblings in total – Janet John William Peter Margaret David Helen Thomas and Joseph.

Colin
Hi Lynn,

To be honest I am not sure yet. Here is what I have discovered about my connection with Paterson's so far:

My Grandmother, Helen Mitchel Kennedy (1900-1971), had 4 sisters and 3 brothers, from her parents Donald Kennedy and Janet Mitchel. One of her sisters, Janet Kennedy, married John Paterson, what must have been in the earlyish 1900's. They had 4 children, Donald Paterson, Janet Paterson, Jane Paterson and William Paterson. I actually remember some of these people before their death, and lived in the town of Coalsnaughton, Clackmannanshire.

I have not however tried tracing John Paterson back through his line, but I suspect their may be a connection further back from him.

This sounds very interesting indeed. I was born in Devonside, and lived most of my life in Coalsnaughton, my name is James Dawson.

I am new to researching my lines, so cant offer too much information to you guys at the moment, but what I do know is my father was named James Dawson, his father before him was James Dawson (piper WW1, military medal, cited as clackmannanshire, miner). My GGrandfather was a stone mason working on the build of the Wallace Monument in 1869.

My fathers family was connected to Pattersons, who still live in Coalsnaughton to this day, as does my mother, who knows the history more than I.

I wonder if there is a connection in this thread to my family?

Hi,

I am hoping someone might be able to stop my mind spinning around in circles about this family !!!

I am trying to research Alexander BLAIR born 13 Jul 1833 and christened 27 Jul 1833 in Alloa, Clackmannanshire. Mothers name is given as Margaret Cornwall TURNBULL and fathers name is given as Duncan BLAIR.

I am confused because I have found a transcript of marriage between Margaret TURNBULL and Alexander LIVINGSTONE 28 Mar 1819 in Alloa.

To complicate further, I have also found possible other children to Margaret Turnbull within this era and regions to a father with variations of the name Alexander Livingstone Duncan and Blair:

John Blair b. 1821 Alloa
Margaret Blair b. 1823
Duncan Blair b. 28 Apr 1825 Alloa to Alexander Livingstone Blair and Margaret Turnbull
Angess Blair b. 1826 Alloa to Alexander Livingtone and Margaret Turnbull
Jennet Blair b. 1829 Alloa? Parents were identified as Duncan Blair and Margaret Turnbull on her death
Alexander Blair b. 1833 Alloa to Duncan Blair and Margaret Cornwall Turnbull.

Guessing anyone reading this will be just as confused but hoping a kind Clackmannan Scot might provide me with some insight as to whether Alexander Livingstone and Duncan Blair have a connection?

I could ramble on further lol, believe most of the family migrated to Australia. I don't feel too confident as to Alexander Blair's parentage give the shifts between the names Duncan Blair and Alexander Livingstone Blair.

Hope someone here can provide direction or information,

Kind regards,
Jane

I know this will either confuse you more or give you an aha moment, when i get credits i'll check the opr and hopefully be able to clear up any confusion :)

a Margaret Stewart married John Nicholson on 27 Mar 1841 at Dysart, Fife, Scotland. One of their children was Alexander, my great grandfather. Alexander Nicholson married Cecilia Nicholson (a cousin) and one their children was John, my grandfather. This part of the family migrated to Australia between 1912 and 1922 or thereabout. Cecilia's father was James Nicholson and Mother was Cecilia Beveridge. Leven Fifeshire or Dunfermline was where they lived. Also Cecilia Beveridge Nicholson had a son born in 1869 whose name was Thomas Campbell. Another son Henry Nicholson an older brother to Cecilia migrated to Australia and married Margaret Ross Darling (born in Edinburgh Scotland). Perhaps we could share our information.

Stephen some interesting stuff there. Haven't been working on this lately so have some catching up but couple of questions. I think I'm missing one of Thomas sons as I have Joseph as 6th. Showing John, William, Peter, David, Thomas and Joseph (he being 9th child. Also I only has John married once with very little info only their marriage date. Coincidentally I have my David and Janet's 1st son Thomas married to a Marion Allen. Funny how the names keep coming up! Well I live in Pennsylvania in the US. We've been to Scotland a few times most recently in 2007 when we based our trip out of Dumfermline and visited the area around Clackmannon and tillicoultry. Visited many a cemetary with no results. My hostess at our B&B helped us find the location of the plot in the Dumfermline Cemetary for I think Janet but have to go through my notes for sure, anyway there was no marker and couldn't really find anything. My Grandfather David married Agnes Dickson from Kilbirnie and they emigrated to Canada where my mother Nancy and her twin Enet were born and then to Connecticut in the US where they settled around my grandmothers sister and later her brother. I believe they first went to the Cleveland Ohio aread where David's parents were settled and some of his siblings but couldn't find work to went to Connecticut. Here's my email shivworld@comcast.net if you want to talk off chat and I can send you a picture of my grandfather although you may have seen in on Martins tribal page. We're planning a trip back to Scotland this fall it's so beautiful there!
Well now I'm going to get my stuff out again. Hope to hear from you again Let me know if there's anything I may have which you could use.
Bye

As for my gggrandfather David I only had his dob as about 1846 with no location. And for death I have the 20th and not the 18th. Which son's line are you related to? Now that I mention that I think you stated which one in your message to Martin who was very helpful to me awhile back. Do you have any info prior to Thomas and Helen and are you in Scotland?

Hi Tony,

Thankyou very much for your reply, I am not a relation of Ralph’s but rather have been researching him for academic purposes, focused mainly on the mariners compass that he designed in the 1790s.

I wonder if you have read his nephew James Walker’s memoirs? They are Accession no. 53 at the Institution of Civil Engineers, and contain some very interesting and detailed information on members of the Walker family, including Ralph and his wife and children. According to this, Ralph married a Miss Wilson in Ireland; I combined this information with the name Jane given on Charles’s baptism record, and haven’t come across the name Clifford anywhere.

It would be great to hear more about what you know, and I’ll help to fill in any gaps of yours if my research so far covers them! My email address is hannahsalisbury1 (at) gmail.com.

Hannah

Hannah,I confirm that Charles is my ancestor.I don't want to list all the bits and pieces that have come down to me on a public board but they include such things as Ralphs signet ring and the originals of his comissions in the St Annes (jamaica) yeomanry first as leutenant then as captain in the 1780s.
I have quite alot on the family with no gaps in the male line from Ralphs grand father to the present. I have little on the females before the 1830s and only know that ralphs wife was Jane (Clifford???????). I am indebted to Isisuk for a lot of information especially on ralphs life in jamaica. Are you descended from Ralph and if so when did your line diverge from mine? Quite prepared to share information but not sure how to do this privatly. regards, Tony

Hi Tony,

I have been researching Ralph Walker, b.1749, inventor and engineer, and was intrigued to read that you are descended from his youngest son - would this be Charles born in 1801 in Poplar? I was also interested to read that you have some information and memorabilia of Ralph's, and I was just wondering if you would be prepared to tell me what sort of thing?

Hannah

Dear Ed,

I am related to the Halls of Clackmannanshire through Thomas Hall - born about 1811 in Tillicoultry. He was the son of a James Hall who apparently married a Jane Jeffery/Jaffray in about 1794 in Clackmannanshire. James is my dead end. Thomas emigrated to NZ in about 1858. According to IGI James had children (in addition to Thomas) called John, Alexander, Catherine and Jean. I am also sceptical about IGI as I have found errors in the data for other family members.

Can you see a James Hall in your tree that might fit my description?

many thanks,
BBB
