If anyone subscribes to the newspaper archives would you kindly do a "look up" for me?
Captain George Whillis was born 1827 in Eyemouth to William Whillis & Mary Maltman. He married Catherine Whillis & they had 5 children, 4 of whom were born in Eyemouth. They moved to Sunderland where George became Master of the barque "Shallot".
There were various spellings of this surname however WILLIS appears to have been the one used by this seafaring family, including George's Uncle John Sr. & Cousin John Jr. of the "Cutty Sark" fame, all of whom were born in Eyemouth.
The Berwickshire M.I. shows that Captain George Willis, aged 39 years, was lost in the Indian Ocean in 1867. I don't know if he was still the Master of the barque "Shallot" as I have not been able to find any mention of the ship or an obituary for George. Can anyone help?
George & Catherine lost 2 sons:
1. William born 1860 in Eyemouth was an able-seaman on the screw-steamer "Titania". He accidentally drowned in the Atlantic Ocean on the 14th April 1881 aged 20 years. There was an Eyemouth obituary for him.
2. George James born 1867 in North Shields sailed on the barque "Zamora", which did not reach it's destination of Newcastle, N.S.W. in December 1888. There were a couple of newspaper articles about the missing barque plus a Sunderland Daily Echo listing George James as missing with all hands.
There must have been a headstone in Eyemouth for this family since they are shown on the Berwickshire M.I. Does anyone know if it is still standing?
Is there anyone from the WHILLAS/WHILLIS/WILLIS Family still living in Eyemouth that I could contact?
Many thanks for any assistance - Joan
