RESEARCHING PEERAGE AND CLANS?

Hello,

I have been asked, by a fellow Family Historian, about how/where to find material on ancestors with possible connections to the Laird or Chief of a Clan (the Clan in question is the Barra MacNiels).

Would anyone have any suggestions as to were Clan Records and/or "peerage" Records may be found/kept?
Any suggestions that I could pass along would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Donna Kirkwood
PS It is in relation to MacNiels (from Barra) who settled in Cape Breton Island (Canada) in early to mid 1800s.

Thanks to all who have responded so far.
My Family Historian friend has a great deal of information, In Cape Breton Island (Canada) which has been from oral histories passed down through stories and songs. However she is looking for Clan records (if they exist)and if the Laird kept records (where?) to find documentation of births, etc.

I have passed on the replies, rec'd so far, to her. Any other suggestions will also be welcomed.

Thanks

Thanks to all who have responded to my query!

Since it was a general question on Peerage and Clan research (but directed at the Barra Macneils) I would like responses specific to the Macneils sent "off list".

Thanks to everyone - past and future - for your help. I have forwarded the suggestions, to date, to my Family Historian friend.

Cheers
