Hi everyone,
I'm trolling for some help as I've run out of ideas. I'm attempting to find the parents of my gr gr gr grandfather Samuel Muir. According to his marriage record to Grace White in 1865 in Stevenston he was born in Irvine however no parents names were given. I've found him in the 1861 census as being from Irvine and born about 1838. Despite this I have been unable to track down a birth record for him in the OPR or anywhere else. I also thought he would probably be listed in the 1841 or 1851 census but no luck there either. If anyone has any ideas or recognizes this family I'd love to hear from you. By the way Samuel and Grace emmigrated to the States (Illinois) in about 1870 and settled around Decatur. Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

Hi Dave

The entry for the birth of Samuel in Irvine in the online IGI has been added by an LDS member. As has the 1841 Kirkoswald entry.

I checked the 1851 census index and there are no possible entries for your Samuel. Interestingly there is a Samuel in Kirkoswald living with either parents or brother, you will need to look at the full entry to find out which.

1851 Kirkoswald ED: 16-5

Daniel MUIR 35y
Jean 2y
William 3m
Thomas 27y
Thomas 6y
Catherine 3y
Margaret 1m
Samuel 15y

It is odd that Samuel did not list his parents names when he married in 1861, either he did not know or is hiding the information for some reason.

Your next option is to research further in the States for more information about Samuel. Wills, obits, newspaper articles, headstone, census records etc.

You may also want to try a wider geographical search at Scotlands People in the 1861 census for Samuel.

Hi Alex,
Thanks for your message. I think I may have found my Sam in both the 1841 and 1851 census. In the 1841 he's in Paisly aged 4 and born outside of census county while his parents are indicated to be born in Ireland. In 1851 I found a Samuel Moore who is 14 and living with his older brother in Kilmars. His brother is also born in Ireland and Sam is listed as being born in Irvine. These are the closest ones I can find. I still can't find a birth record through Scotlandspeople so i may have to get the film from LDS. I am wondering if they were from Ireland they may also have been Catholic. If that's the case would any birth/baptisms be recorded locally in Irvine or would they have been at a regional catholic church? Guess I'll just keep looking. Thanks again for your reply.

HI Alex,
No I hadn't gotten around to checking the archives. I was only just postulating as I wrote to you. Thanks for that link though. I'll give it a shot.

Kind regards,
Dave
