McGregor & The Shore Private House & Inn - Parish Of Dundonald

In the 1881 census, this was heavily populated by various lines of the McGregor family. However, I do not know anything at all about this property and can't find anything online. Does anyone have any information that they can share with me about its location and history? Given that McGregors moved on from the location quite soon after 1881, I presume it was either destroyed, sold or they became bankrupt ...... any information very much appreciated, regards, Robert McGregor

Robert, I saw your posting and would like to ask if you know anything about Ann MacGregor who married Alexander Ramsey in 1828 somewhere in Ayreshire?

They are ancestors of mine.

Walter

Walter,

Working backwards. Alexander Ramsay died in Bartonholm, Parish of Irvine on 10/4/1900 - he is the widow of Ann McGregor and the son of Alexander. He died, aged 77, of cancer of the lip. Bartonholm was a paupers residential home and hence the fact that Alexander died there isn't a good representation of where he lived his life - old people were sent there from locations further afield.

If the 77 year old is fairly accurate, this makes Alexander born in late 1822 or early 1823. There is no early 1823 but there is an Alexander born on 24/3/1822 to Alexander Ramsay and Marjory Anderson. This birth was registered in Crail.

The only marriage I can then find is Alexander marrying Anne McGregor on 30/10/1837 in Clackmannanshire. Alexander was a brickwork labourer and probably worked on various construction gangs all over the country - so these movements are not impossible.

I hope this helps - it isn't really an Ayrshire lead at all - but perhaps that is what has been frustrating your efforts to track this one down - best wishes,

Robert

It was definately Bartonholm Poorhouse and not the village of Bartonholm which lay close by?
