My gggrandfather was Andrew Tait, born 15 september 1839 in Ayr, Crosshill, to William Tait and Mary Stevenson. He married Jane Stevenson 31 dec 1858 in Glasgow. They emigrated to the USA in 1880 and are both buried in Manchester, NH. Jane's father is listed on her death cert. as James Tait...not sure about this. Her birth in Glasgow, 22 or 24 may 1843 is mirky.
I would love to trace William Tait and Mary Stevenson, though not sure where they were born.
Lots of stories on Stevenson side of how we are related (indirectly) to Robert Louis Stevenson...don't know if it's true, but it is a place to start.
Any advice is appreciated. Also posting on Lanarkshire board.

AGNES TAIT Birth: 01 DEC 1865 Bridgeton, Glasgow
WILLIAM TAIT Birth: 07 JUN 1867 Bridgeton, Glasgow
HELEN TAIT Birth: 01 MAR 1869 Bridgeton, Glasgow
MARGARET TAIT Birth: 17 DEC 1870 Bridgeton, Glasgow
ROBERT TAIT Birth: 20 OCT 1872 Bridgeton, Glasgow
JANE TAIT Birth: 12 JUL 1874 Bridgeton, Glasgow

Given that they married in Bridgeton in 1858 and they were still there for all those births, you should check the 1861 and 1871 censuses there. This may give a clue as to their birth locations.

You can get the names of Jane's parents and her age from her marriage record at http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

And, if the parents of either Andrew or Jane died after 1854, you can check those records and, hopefully, get the grandparent names.

i got her marr. cert. and no parents are listed for jane. she died in manchester, nh, so i got the death cert. for her and it lists her father as james stevenson, no mother's name. but her age at death gave me an approx. birthdate and she was supposedly born in glasgow...so...
i thought i'd try the 1851 census if the microfilm is available - i'll be happy when all census' is available online -i'll gladly pay the subscription price for that.
